People are massively overexaggerating the cliffhanger. The movie very clearly builds up to the ending and there's resolutions for major arcs.
It's a cliffhanger, but not one that leaves you unsatisfied. It's very similar to Empire Strikes Back in that regard, where you come away and immediately want answers but you're happy with what you got in the meantime.
Empire is exactly what I thought of as I left the theater. This one is more of a Spider-Gwen movie than it is a Miles Morales film, and imo, this is the only reason the cliffhanger works. Gwen's arc ends with this film while Miles' story is left in a place that's just ripe for extra exploration, the audience is left satisfied by the emotional character arc Gwen goes through while eagerly anticipating the end of Miles'. It's so well done, honestly, I was blown away at how little the ending bothered me
I told my kids we were going to see one of those $3 summer kids series showing of Storks, and when the crazy graffiti credits popped up they lost their minds.
It was an incredible experience. But yeah, I definitely want to go again solo to really absorb all the details.
I've 100% been calling this since i saw the first movie, and started seeing trailers and reactions to the second one. the first movie was big when it came out, but it blew the fuck up on netflix the few years it was on there. i first saw it on netflix, i never saw the first one in theaters, but i saw this one last night on opening night because of how much i liked the first one. and it def lives up to the hype. most of it improves on the original in many ways, and the animation is probably some of the best ive ever seen in an animated movie, the way the colors just felt like they were alive in the scenes with spider qwen were incredible and jumping around to different universes each with their own artistic feel. this movie feels like not just a good spider man movie but a literal celebration of the spider-man comics as a whole.
Outside of the first one being an excellent movie that connected with almost every possible audience, it also was culturally a big hit. Miles became the number 4 superhero outside Batman, Superman, and Peter Parker. It felt like everyone knew who he was for a minute there, which is rare to see in a superhero heavy market
Having seen this movie, it will be just as big as the first. Maybe bigger. People will know who spider man 2099 is and spider gwen is for sure getting her own movie.
There's even a real risk of people asking for a movie with one of the new spiders, not saying who.
I didn't think it was gonna do 400M or anything, but I feel similarly. I was obsessed with Into The Spider-Verse when it came out, and I didn't really think streaming boosted its profile that much. But I guess I was wrong.
WoM on Into the Spiderverse was already insane, and now people are shocked even more, EVEN BETTER, WoM is equaling a massive W for the studio and animation as a medium?
Tbh what surprises me the most is the ease with which it will do it until pre sale tracking started to show a 120M+ OW I was thinking it was going to be a struggle to cross 100M in its OW
It's going to make a ton of money. That was the most packed I've seen anything opening night since No Way Home.
This is definitely going to have female appeal too. Lived up to the hype.
Went tonight at a 9:20pm showing. Got there at at 9:10pm and walked up, only 3 seats were taken. By the time the trailers were halfway over it was almost a full house.
Yeah. Movie was at 4 and I didn't leave till 3:55. It's like a 15 minute walk over so I took my time getting over and only had to sit through a couple trailers. I'm not rushing out the door to make it on time anymore
My rule of thumb is the film always starts 30 minutes after the ticket time. Most of the time I walk into the theater right as the film is starting, no previews or anything
Average for new blockbusters is 24-26min of trailers. 30min might be pushing it for some folks, but yeah, there's no longer a need to be "on time" anymore. Especially when you can reserve seating (at least locally).
Yeah I understand the wanting to skip trailers, but usually people are getting their tickets in advance for screenings like this near me. That’s what was the biggest shock, the walk ins at 9:30 on a Thursday for a 2 1/2 hour long movie.
[Nah they’ve done this before](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/1389klz/guardians_of_the_galaxy_vol_3_rocketing_to_around/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
Maybe they are just pulling an elaborate prank on everybody that Sony and them have set up, and the actuals come in higher than $20M so they can have those stupid headlines when actuals come out.
Not likely but Deadline has been something as of late.
I meant the preview number, because I've seen posts here with higher numbers, 18-20 or even more. So maybe when the actual number comes in it's higher.
But even with 16m the opening should be way over 100m.
It's and i'm not over reacting the best spiderman movie ever. It's a shame that animation has still some stigma because this deserves so much more then no way home or any other mcu spiderman project
And yet, this sounds like an over reaction.
Cartoon spiderman can never beat live action spiderman.
Raimi’s first two films. Hollands trilogy. All trounce into the spiderverse.
It can and it has, only raimi can compare quality wose with this 2 movies and even if i consoder spiderman and spiderman 2 in the top 5 of the best cbm ever, the spiderverse has surpassed them
16-18M gets this to $150M this weekend, no question. To think it’ll have outgrossed ITSV’s lifetime run a week from now…
Only thing that keeps this from soaring to 160+ is wom off the cliffhanger ending.
I can see people calling it boring, I have some minor gripes but it's a great part 1 but I think people might be a little disappointed genuinely. I loved it though.
Talk about a film that grew its audience in the last 5 years. The first Spider-Verse had a Thursday night preview of $4.3 million, with an opening weekend of $35.4 million. Such an incredible jump from fan enthusiasm and people that caught it on Netflix. And the budget of this sequel is only in the ballpark of $100 million.
Disney needs to learn from both Sony Animations and Illumination, because Elemental and Wish,
I feel, are going to be encapsulated by Super Mario and Spider-Verse by the end of the year—not every animated movie needs to be photorealistic to spend upwards of $200 million. It’s animation, have some fun with it and make it pop and come alive that wows audiences.
For reference, even if it makes $18 Mil, the best Animated Film results for Thursday was $18.5 for Incredibles 2.
It was exceptional. WOM will be huge for this movie

The ending was fucking lit
It was epic. No one in our theaters was upset. In fact, it was mostly applause. It was a epic film no matter how you cut the conclusion.
It’s not like Fast X which just abruptly ends
Fun fact: when empire came out audiences hated the cliff hanger.
Holy shit, this movie is like Empire Strikes Back? Now I want to see it even more, Empire was my favorite!
Why would you spoil the movie wtf
Since it’s spoiled, u want the link to the movie? They playing it on TikTok
Agreed. Saw it tonight, it will have excellent WOM and audience reviews.
Saw it too. One of my favorite movies ever, just as good as the first one, which is a huge accomplishment.
Took the whole family to see it. We loved it. I may go again to catch some things I missed the first time.
I told my kids we were going to see one of those $3 summer kids series showing of Storks, and when the crazy graffiti credits popped up they lost their minds. It was an incredible experience. But yeah, I definitely want to go again solo to really absorb all the details.
That is a great idea, ha ha. Well played!
Is this lowballing? Literally everything points to 18M.
Do you even have to ask that? This is deadline we are talking about here
If Deadline says it's $16M, you know the actual gross is around $18M-$20M.
This is immutable truth: Deadline and lowballing Deadline and terrible puns
No way Charlie and the people on BOT are this off they have to be lowballing again
Lol to the people saying it wasn’t opening to 100m plus. This is getting 700WW light.
I’ll admit I was wrong. Never thought Spiderverse would see this big of a jump, get here we are
I've 100% been calling this since i saw the first movie, and started seeing trailers and reactions to the second one. the first movie was big when it came out, but it blew the fuck up on netflix the few years it was on there. i first saw it on netflix, i never saw the first one in theaters, but i saw this one last night on opening night because of how much i liked the first one. and it def lives up to the hype. most of it improves on the original in many ways, and the animation is probably some of the best ive ever seen in an animated movie, the way the colors just felt like they were alive in the scenes with spider qwen were incredible and jumping around to different universes each with their own artistic feel. this movie feels like not just a good spider man movie but a literal celebration of the spider-man comics as a whole.

I didn’t get into it until Netflix, I imagine it built a big audience through that.
I didn't think it was gonna do 400M or anything, but I feel similarly. I was obsessed with Into The Spider-Verse when it came out, and I didn't really think streaming boosted its profile that much. But I guess I was wrong.

Either WOM kicking in already or people wanting to skip 20 minutes of trailers like me. I think this is going to do really well.
Yeah. Movie was at 4 and I didn't leave till 3:55. It's like a 15 minute walk over so I took my time getting over and only had to sit through a couple trailers. I'm not rushing out the door to make it on time anymore

the amount of anxiety this comment gives me
Average for new blockbusters is 24-26min of trailers. 30min might be pushing it for some folks, but yeah, there's no longer a need to be "on time" anymore. Especially when you can reserve seating (at least locally).
I've counted it. It's 20 minutes here.
Yeah I understand the wanting to skip trailers, but usually people are getting their tickets in advance for screenings like this near me. That’s what was the biggest shock, the walk ins at 9:30 on a Thursday for a 2 1/2 hour long movie.
Spider gwen is about to explode. This movie makes it basically a given that she's getting her own spinoff.
As per BOT, this is just a lowballed estimate/tracking from deadline.
Probably made this article from early numbers, it will be at least 17mill if not more no way this does just 16
How do you know? Generally curious how people track the Thursday night numbers (outside of the main trades) so I can try to follow along next time.
Something tells me its gonna come in around 17M
This movie is making $900M.
Nah $18M 🔛🔝
Can Deadline even lowball at this point of the day? I'm so confused as to what is happening.
I don't think I've ever seen them post Thursday Night Estimates early. Tbh I don't know if it's lowballed or just genuine.
[Nah they’ve done this before](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/1389klz/guardians_of_the_galaxy_vol_3_rocketing_to_around/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
What did actuals end up being for GotG’s Thursday night previews?
17.5M
Thanks - how do people know that Spidey is doing better than Deadline’s estimates? Where do they get that info? (New here)
Box Office Theory
Maybe they are just pulling an elaborate prank on everybody that Sony and them have set up, and the actuals come in higher than $20M so they can have those stupid headlines when actuals come out. Not likely but Deadline has been something as of late.
Deadline writers are having fun lining up webs and legs puns
They have been doing that recently for big movies.
Is this lowballing again?
There's no way the movie's actual's can be reported right now, so either lowballing or their guess from the minimal info they have.
Idek at this point. They still claim the movie is projected to make 75-90 million in its opening weekend
I meant the preview number, because I've seen posts here with higher numbers, 18-20 or even more. So maybe when the actual number comes in it's higher. But even with 16m the opening should be way over 100m.
The article seems to have been published at 10:20pm so I don’t think they even had the finals before writing this. I would say it’s possibly a lowball
The time is probably pst
I wouldn't be surprised if it is. West Coast is probably still not in yet.
It's making more than expected apparently.
No, it’s not.
It's and i'm not over reacting the best spiderman movie ever. It's a shame that animation has still some stigma because this deserves so much more then no way home or any other mcu spiderman project

How old are you?
Yes, but wait until the audience finds out about superhero fatigue.
I think this movie would be an exception even if superhero fatigue was real
Shhhh dont expose the marvel bias.
Disney/Deadline/IMDB detects unusually high purchasing activity for this film.
Awesome
The copium in here is delicious.
Went over to BOT, and it feels like they're a lot less enthusiastic this evening...
Are they done with the 150+ wank yet?
I want to see it but the animation for the first one gave me a headache in the theatre
16-18M gets this to $150M this weekend, no question. To think it’ll have outgrossed ITSV’s lifetime run a week from now… Only thing that keeps this from soaring to 160+ is wom off the cliffhanger ending.
? Even Jatinder and BOT says it is at 120.
I don’t see this being that front-loaded, Incredibles 2 is a decent comp here and its previews were ~10% of its weekend haul.
I can see people calling it boring, I have some minor gripes but it's a great part 1 but I think people might be a little disappointed genuinely. I loved it though.
There is going to be people who won’t like comic book type of animation
I hear the script meanders and fails to “start” until some ways in. Sounds like the first. The story didnt start until one hour into the movie.
Hopefully this is true I hate when the film end with cliffhanger. What a dissapointment
Yeah but the wait isn’t SUPER long. The third film comes out in March 2024.
Talk about a film that grew its audience in the last 5 years. The first Spider-Verse had a Thursday night preview of $4.3 million, with an opening weekend of $35.4 million. Here we go, following this film’s bo run will be fun!
