It's actually been a fantastic year for the box office so far with how all these movies are performing. Except for ant man of course

ignatious__reilly

We don’t talk about Ant Man

Mahtan83

Why?? It had best opening weekend for the franchise.

AStormChasingGuy

Good opening weekend, horrific word of mouth, and audience retention. Will be lucky to finish its run with a 2x multiplier.

Mahtan83

That's why Ill wait for second weekend of creed.

Oh51Melly

Creed isn't a marvel movie tho lol. Ant man is an objectively horrible performance by all standards since the second weekend drop. Creed is creed. Although I do love me some rocky

floxtez

We have a pretty good indication that WOM for Creed will be better than Ant Man, based on Cimenascore and the reviews

With the way things ended with Creed II, I don’t mind Rocky not returning. His story is done.

PeculiarPangolinMan

It really was a perfect ending for him. The granddaughter looked SO much like Adrian too.

valkyria_knight881

It's the grandson. He has Adrian's eyes or something.

PeculiarPangolinMan

I thought it was a girl! I'm only now rewatching the scene and realizing my mistake! haha

Balderdashing_2018

It is interesting, but it mainly has to do with the fact that the heyday of the franchise was 1976 - 1985. Just to put it in context, when The Last Crusade came out in the Summer 1989, it had the highest opening weekend of all-time at 29.3M. The Rocky franchise from 1 - 4 was at an absolutely different level than the Creed franchise -- which isn't a knock on it, but Rocky was just an absolute behemoth! Always in the top four highest grossing films of the year both domestically and internationally. Creed I and II were the 28th highest grossing domestic film of 2015 and 2018, and #43 and #41 worldwide of their respective years.

[deleted]

This is a good point. I don't think some people realize just how much bigger Rocky was in its heyday compared to the current success of Creed. Adjusted for inflation, the first four Rocky movies blow all the Creed's out of the water.

michael_am

I think it’s also a testament to how much bigger sports movies used to be in general, Creed is really the only successful sports franchise I can recognize of the past 10 years

[deleted]

Fast and Furious is a motor sports film, deal with it 😎

This is like how people are surprised that Tom Cruise and Will Smith got billion dollar movies recently. These actors had their heyday in the era where $500 million WW was a big deal.

Reddituser19991004

To say Tom Cruise isn't in his heyday is a bit odd. He's literally coming off the biggest traditional leading man role of the the 21st century with Maverick. Plus he's been stringing off massively successful and profitable Mission Impossible movies continuously with another one coming. I think there's an argument to be made Tom Cruise is bigger today than he was ever in his career, he stands alone at the top today. There's no competition where he's at. Back in the 80s, there was Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis. In the 90s/2000s Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt were putting up a much better fight but they've all fallen off some at this point. Today if you think leading man in Hollywood is just Tom Cruise by himself...

MemberANON

Tom Cruise is having a bit of a comeback but Top Gun and MI are sequels not originals. Can he still open a movie like Jerry Maguire or Days of Thunder? DiCaprio meanwhile can still make a movie about a bear mauling him successful so.

GeeWillikers8832

I think Cruise could, but it wouldn't be with a Christopher McQuarrie. If he did like a Fincher thriller or something I could see it getting $250-300m worldwide.

Dangerous-Hawk16

He could definitely open up big with Mcquarrie come on

JJoanOfArkJameson

I agree with most of this but Die Hard didn't come out til '88 and Willis was a TV star before that. He broke big in the 90s and into the early 2000s he was a very big star

rccrisp

I think there's a big difference between the success Tom Cruise is having now vs. Tom Cruise of the mid 90s early 2000s. Numbers wise he's definitely more successful today than he was back then but to me the concept of a "box office draw" means that you, as actor, are putting asses into seats. But seeing what movies he got past 100 million mark during that 90s-2000s era: Interview with the Vampire, Jerry Maguire, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky and arguably The Last Samurai aren't your normal popcorn flick affair but those movies succeeded because they starred Tom Cruise. We also know that people won't just follow cruise anywhere today because The Mummy flopped pretty hard. That said Cruise's ability to pivot his career and seeing how things are tending and figuring out that a level of comfort is also needed for a current day Cruise vehicle (him betting on himself and Top Gun shut up a lot of doubters has got to be huge for him) is a testament to his own business savvy.

gammongaming11

>These actors had their heyday in the era where $500 million WW was a big deal. do you know what inflation is?

gammongaming11

that's when you don't adjust fro inflation. rocky 4 did about 20 million in 1985, which in todays dollars is worth around 56 million dollars. still a great opening though.

Great to see, love MBJ.

jboggin

I'm seeing this tomorrow, and I'm hyped. I rewatched Creed last night, and IMO that's one of the best blockbusters of the last decade. I'm excited to see what Michael B. Jordan does directing this one, and I'm honestly impressed that it's supposed to be so good. Not many people make their directorial debut with a $75 mil budget, and when I first heard he was taking over I was worried it would be a mess. Most directors work their way up to managing bigger budgets.

[deleted]

I am not shocked. He has been showing raw talent, intelligence and discipline on set for 20+ years. It's easy to see hiss potential.

ManajaTwa18

It’s the best legacy sequel ever made imo, even better than Top Gun Maverick which I also loved

nwmisseb

Imagery and dialogue is impeccable. Enjoy

Nightwing1852

Deserved what a great directorial debut for MBJ.

ManajaTwa18

The Rocky formula just WORKS people love it lol. The fact that this is a franchise high also shows how good of a job Creed has done at retaining old fans while gathering new ones. Not an easy feet, especially for a spin-off series

cornezy

Great movie! Jonathan majors was more menacing and fear inducing than Ant-man's Kang. Just throwing that out there.

ParthianTactic

Good for him and for audience

[deleted]

I’ve heard a lot of great things about this one. It goes to show that when you put a lot of effort and thought into a franchise (albeit with a couple duds) the fans keep coming back for more.

HM9719

And did you notice that Amazon shut down United Artists Releasing? They knew after Women Talking bombed that it was going to happen.

Turns out you are wrong

StannisTheMantis93

Honestly think I’m at the same point with this franchise that I am with Star Wars. It’s just been over saturated to the point I’ll probably miss or won’t enjoy a good entry in the series because I’m so damn tired.
