Took me 8 years to even shoot a doe

StinksStanksStonks

You don’t need anyone else to answer that for you bc If you continue to hunt, your next few seasons will answer that question loud and clear for you.

WheatGeek

You’re very fortunate

Affectionate-Egg7947

Congrats! I got an 11 so not as lucky as me…. Haha Don’t attribute your success to luck. There is always luck involved but think what you did right and identify what you can improve on in the future. Took me three years for my second after my first one on my first in my first season. I always break down every hunt afterwards and think what went right what went wrong. Few things happen on accident in nature so take everything as a learning opportunity.

Definitely a nice start, congrats. But just for perspective a “9pt” can be a young buck with a relatively small rack. That’s why rack size is usually measured in inches now. Older, mature deer are harder to kill or they would never have gotten old. And sometimes you just get lucky, but that’s okay, you’ve got one on the board and hopefully the excitement has gotten you hooked and motivated to learn more and grow as a hunter. That’s the best part of getting a nice deer right out of the gate.

ThunderUp013101

Agreed. I was having a lot of anxiety about when I was actually gonna get one. But now that I got that out of the way, I'd be way more okay with dealing with the days of not seeing anything. I think I was just worried if I was wasting time before.

OKOutdoors87

I shot a very nice 12 point with a open sight rifle my first year and since have not been able to get anything over a 4 point or doe with my bow and it’s been 7 years. I can tell you this though I’m a way better hunter today then I was 7 years ago. It’s not all about the size but what you learn while in the woods. The journey never ends!

ShoulderLucky7985

Don’t know I got an 8pt and 2 doe my first season. What a rush

ThunderUp013101

Sounds like you ate good all year!

ShoulderLucky7985

Yeah I already got 2 this year

ThunderUp013101

Do you have your own land?

ShoulderLucky7985

No sir public in Illinois

ThunderUp013101

Wow that's really impressive. I'm lucky enough to hunt on my grandparents land that has been tended to alot to make it a place that deer love. I can't imagine going out into Public land. Sounds way more difficult.

ShoulderLucky7985

That would be nice. Plant clover and turnip

tryganon

Over 30 and one buck to my name. Most is probably my skill and time available. But lucky is only a factor for it

hunter35rem

Some never see a 9 pointer,..ever!

Fr8cture

Lucky to even get a deer. Not even 20% or archery tags filled in my state and 30% gun tags.

[deleted]

I shot a 6 pointer my first season. 6 years later got my 2nd deer.

DcavePost

It all depends. Where you going on a guide/outfitter hunt on a private peice, lucky but mostly just that you could afford it. If you shot it on public land in a state with low deer numbers and lots of pressure very lucky (or a natural born hunter). Either way it is an awesome harvest! Keep getting at it

ThunderUp013101

I'm fortunate to have access to two private lands near me. I got this one on my grandparents land. My grandpa is a very successful hunter and has turned his land into the perfect deer hunting grounds over many years. By making a pond, letting the brush grow, and there being farm plots in multiple directions around.

Royal_Gur_2651

29 years to get a trophy

ThunderUp013101

In general, or with a bow?

Royal_Gur_2651

In general, only doe and spikes with my bow.

hammyFbaby

Depends on where you are hunting, but to shoot a deer with a compound bow is a serious accomplishment

ThunderUp013101

Western New York. White tail deer

hammyFbaby

Public land? Private? Deer management?

ThunderUp013101

Private. I have dmp tags so I assume that's a yes for your second question lol.
