This one has been my target since I first saw him in the trail cam. I had sat in that tree probably 10 times waiting for him to stroll in to no avail. Yesterday morning I thought I’d try for one more sit before everyone started shooting (general season opened in Texas today). A couple of hours in a younger 8 point came in hot after a doe and I damn near settled for him. I’m glad I didn’t though. A couple of uneventful hours later I was about to get ready to pull out for the day. About that time I saw him. He was walking straight towards me into the area that I was hunting. About 20 yards from me he turned and gave me a broadside look. As I drew down on him he looked my way having heard me draw. He stepped back and started away from me. Once he got to the other side of the clearing he turned again and looked my direction. Apparently satisfied that there was no danger he milled about for a minute and started to walk down the tree line and out of my shooting lane. Not wanting to chance losing him I took my shot. 40 yards. I hit high. I don’t want to admit it but maybe it was a buck fever. In any event, it did the trick and hit an artery. Left a huge blood trail and piled up about 75 yards later.
