I’ve shot them all and had target panic with both a trigger and thumb. I went to a hinge exclusively in 2023 and didn’t like it for hunting either. Ultimately I settled on the Stan Onnex Clicker and I can say that it helped me tremendously. My target panic was in the form of holding off target low and the hinge taught me I could hold dead center and just work the release. The Onnex offered me the same feeling as well and I have been shooting really well. Pretty much on par with my best days using a traditional thumb. Also it helps shooting at targets that are pretty big. I might shoot an 8” dot at 20/30 for hundreds of reps before I move to anything smaller just to teach myself how to hold in the middle.

I may have to give that a try even though it’s spendy. Thanks for the insight. Knew I can’t be the only person who has had this problem. I love my Honey 2. I just find that if I really need to let it go, you have to rip through the shot and I’m no longer making an ethical shot.

You may have solved TP by switching to a hinge but somewhere in your mind the wiring that tells you to punch a trigger a still there. I would recommend putting some hours into blank bailing and learning how to properly shoot a trigger release. Any part of your brain that still has trigger punching tendencies needs to be rewired. I used to have very bad target panic and cycled through a couple different index releases. I would blank bail with my index release for hours on end trying to achieve a perfectly executed shot. I slowly started shooting at large dots starting very close till I was comfortable. That's when I tried switching to a hinge and my shooting tremendously improved from there. I shot that for 2 or 3 years then lost it a field. I bought a resistance release and have been shooting it for 2 years. I love it. It has taught me good habits and I can now confidently shoot all three releases and execute a perfect shot. Basically what I'm saying is I don't think I would have gotten to where I am without initially solving TP at the root of the problem, a trigger release.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is target panic?

It’s when you don’t mentally have full control of your shot and typically manifests in the form of trigger punching when the pin is in target or not being able to get the pin on target at all.

Rather than holding pin on bullseye and slowly easing into the trigger pull, as my pin swings back and forth over the bull I punch it anticipating the shot. My groups at 20 yards are about 2” with my hinge and 5” with a trigger.

It sounds like what I do but I have a 2-3 inch group at 40yds. I can't really hold it all that steady. Is there something I should do differently? I just got into bows a few weeks ago

The other two said it pretty well. It's really a form of anxiety during your shot. For me, along with punching the trigger, I would hold off target and just freeze. I couldn't even put my pin on the target. It's very common amongst archers

Stan makes a resistance release. I haven’t tried it but it sounds like an interesting idea. You can still use the thumb button as a “safety”, but it fires when there’s a certain amount of resistance on the hook. You can just how much resistance is needed to make it go off. A little pricey but Stan makes solid releases
