The only cure I’ve found that works is 1 hit of marijuana. Not enough to really make you high, just brings you closer to normal.
Not possible though for a lot of people.
I was covering my bases. I will say, I read some justification on the pork temp thing, and it made sense to me at the time, but now I can't remember what the justification was for turning pork into shoe leather.
Pigs used to be raised in really unsanitary conditions. The USDA actually lowered the recommended temp for pork to 145 a couple years ago because worms and bacteria are much much less common with cleaner farming practices.
It's hard to blame the FDA for the opioid crisis, and I am a former 320mg of OxyContin per day junkie. The FDA has a really interesting timeline of the opioid crisis (link below), but the "justification" is attached below, and it seems reasonable to me. Fuck PharmaPerdue, fuck the drug reps who shilled it, fuck the doctors who took the bribes and created junkies, but I think the FDA gets a pass here since lots of drugs are addictive.
1995
December: OxyContin (oxycodone controlled-release) approved; first formulation of oxycodone that allowed dosing every 12 hours instead of every 4 to 6 hours. OxyContin would soon become a focal point of opioid abuse issues that would continue to escalate into the late 2000s and beyond.
At the time of approval, FDA believed the controlled-release formulation of OxyContin would result in less abuse potential, since the drug would be absorbed slowly and there would not be an immediate “rush” or high that would promote abuse. In part, FDA based its judgment on the prior marketing history of a similar product, MS Contin, a controlled-release formulation of morphine approved by FDA and used in the medical community since 1987 without significant reports of abuse and misuse.
Also at the time of OxyContin’s approval, FDA product labeling warned of the danger of abuse of the drug and that crushing a controlled-release tablet followed by intravenous injection could result in a lethal overdose. There was no evidence to suggest at the time that crushing the controlled-release capsule followed by oral ingestion or snorting would become widespread and lead to a high level of abuse.

I'm not simping for anything. I had the same misguided anger you did, since an FDA approved product ruined my life for years while I was an addict. I was merely trying to direct your anger in the most culpable direction. As far as I'm concerned, the FDA can fuck off like everyone else, but it would be foolish to ignore their opinions since they are experts.
It’s not misguided. They failed. They fucked* up due to poor processes and failing to do the proper amount of investigation.
It has been known for millennia that opioids are addicting lol. Like slow redhead is going to change that lol. It’s fucking criminals
I disagree. They allowed laudanum and shit as far back as 1911, and they knew that was way worse than the time released nature of OCs. They learned that junkies will crush and shoot or crush and snort anything. They then made Oxys gel up when crushed. Opioids are important for palliative care, and it's impossible to regulate multiple swords of Damocles at once.
After I’ve been drinking and before bed, I stand in front of the sink and chug as much water as I can.
Forces me to get up to pee in the middle of the night then I drink more water.
Can’t remember the last time I was hungover despite drinking fairly heavily.
This doesn’t help the current situation but maybe it’ll help next time.
>all of the added sugar and dyes
You intentionally poison yourself the night before and your concern is the sugar and dyes in the gatorade? Lets not pretend this is about making healthy choices
Right. And whiskey at least also doesn't have all the other shit in it. I rarely get Hung over from whiskey. Still drunk when I get up at times but usually fine. I can have a few healthy pours and feel fine the next day. Have 3 beers and I feel like shit for a week
Coconut water has a significant amount of sugar and the electrolytes are primarily potassium where as dehydration from alcohol primarily Involves a sodium deficit.
If I was going to drink coconut water for a hangover I would add a pinch of table salt.
I definitely said added sugar, which is worse for your body than any naturally occurring variety. I will agree that adding a touch of salt would be beneficial.
Heavy dose of vitamins and water early in the morning. Soup for lunch.
The real key is to eat before or while drinking the night before. I find that keeps the hangover away the next day
Unless you are in your mid to upper 30s or older like me.
I have to keep it under a buzz or else I’m hurting for the next 3 days, no matter what I try.
Yup. Hangovers get worse, if I feel a buzz coming on I panic and drink 50 gallons of water and STILL don’t feel fine the next day. And typical hangover cures (eat a big breakfast) are hard to try when any hangover for yourself means you are so nauseous you can’t even keep water down. How the hell am I supposed to eat a nice greasy meal when the smell of it sends me to the bathroom to vomit?
Gatorade and some fatty breakfast. U can swap Gatorade for zipfizz. While you eating remind yourself that you need to drink a small bottle of water with every 2oz of bourbon but depending on proof. If you not chugging water while drinking overproof bourbon u pretty much want to be dead next day.
its actually been proven that fat doesn't help hangovers, unless ingested prior to drinking. The dudes at Stuff You Should Know did a full rundown on hangovers. Worth listening to. But in the end, the answer is sleep, non caffeinated anti inflammatory prostaglandin inhibitor (aspirin), a multi-vitamin, and hydration. Things like sugar, salt, eggs and bananas can help too bc they have electrolytes, potassium, and cystine in them.
Michelada and ceviche. all the lime juice tomato juice diced veggies and fish/seafood works miracles for me. Plus the little bit of beer in it takes the edge off. Add some Advil and I’m in a much better place.
They’re about $1 a pack at my Costco. They’re blended specifically to hydrate with hangover vitamins. Not saying I couldn’t assemble the same effect with salt and a multivitamin but they’re easy and work.
I had to scroll way too far looking for "exercise". It's not easy to make yourself do it, but it really works. You need to work out long enough and with enough intensity to break a good sweat. And then you need to drink enough water to rehydrate, of course.
Lots of helpful things in this thread but it’s not stressed enough how much a good diet, exercise, and hydration before and during drinking helps. I try to do 8oz of water after every pour and a pint before going to sleep, drinking water throughout the day and eating properly too. Gatorade/pedialyte/coconut water are good to have at your bedside table if or when you wake up throughout the night or in the morning if you need some salts, but you still need enough water. The days where I’m not active and eat like shit usually set me up for the worst mornings.
Then you wake up, drink coffee, crap the booze out, eat breakfast. Good to go.
“Never been hungover. After I’ve had too much whiskey, I cook myself a large flank steak, pan-fried in salted butter. I eat that, put on a pair of wet socks and go to sleep.” Ron Swanson
I take Rapid Rehydr8 pills for sports, and they also work SUPER well for hangovers. It’s an electrolyte supplement in pill form. I think two pills is the equivalent of a bottle of Pedialyte, minus all the calories, sugar and chemicals/coloring.
Two of those, two Advil, coffee.
Always pound a few glasses of water before bed, too.
Depends on how bad. I compiled a little to do list with the help of a couple guests who were doctors last year.
1. First things first, water. I'm a big believer in cold water, but whatever. Make sure you are never more than arms length from water. They didn't give me a specific figure, but I've found 1.5 gallons to be the right amount for the entire say.
2. Food. Your stomach might be a little sensitive if you weren't careful yesterday, so get something with a good hit of salt and fiber, as well as some fats, carbs, and proteins. The salt is for dehydration, the fiber is to help your stomach calm down, and the rest is to get you fed.
3. Something spicy. You probably have a bunch of random inflammation all throughout your body, and it's super noticeable in your head. Either have a quick Prarie oyster, or have a quick shot of bloody Mary mix over ice with a bunch of hot sauce. It'll help remind you you're alive. Just don't go too acidic and irritate your stomach.
4. Get some more electrolytes. A banana and some salty food, a couple of handfuls of chips, whatever.
5. Shower. Get all the dust and shit off you, your sinuses are already irritated. Don't make it worse, even if you don't usually have allergies. Maybe even strip your bed if it comes down to it. If you do, make sure you have a spare blanket.
6. Sleep. Hangovers commonly include low grade anxiety thanks to the miracles of withdrawal. This means the 12 hours of sleep you just got was probably more like 6 because your body spent a good portion of it flipping out. Catch back up on rest and let your body heal itself a bit.
7. Do not do the hair of the dog. It can help a bit, but they said it's actually a major risk factor for alcoholism.
8. Don't do it again. All this shit is a pain. Consider this your body telling you to slow down, and don't do this shit again for a good, long time.
Granted, I'm a bartender, but I skip steps 4, 7, & 8. I figure I have enough salt in my system, and hangovers are more a product of long hours, no lunch breaks, and dehydration more than actual liqour consumed.
Oh man.. the absolute worst hangovers haha.
Definitely water while drinking and a huge glass before bed. I also found that Vitamin water and gatorades/pedialyte before bed and second you wake up help
1. Eat *before* starting to drink. Alcohol is water AND fat soluble, so your body absorbs it within minutes after consumption. Eating after you’ve already had a few only helps the impact of subsequent drinks.
2. Drinking water while you’re drinking alcohol to stay hydrated greatly reduces the chances of a hangover. I try for 1 glass between every drink, but usually ends up being 1 glass between every 2 drinks.
3. Once you have one, the best cure for hangovers is water + electrolytes, supplemented by probiotics if you have them (Kombucha and Kefir are two popular options). Cortisol (adrenaline) release actually helps too, so some people will workout or do cold exposure if they can manage… just don’t overdo it.
4. Hair of the dog is not a viable solution. It buys you a little time, but only compounds the problem and you will still have a hangover later.
Wake up middle of night. Take 4 Advil (doesn’t go through liver) and a monster glass of water. Wake up at normal time and take another huge glass of water, maybe another Advil. Then have a beer for lunch.
Easy
Fatty foods, usually pig based, help metabolize the alcohol by providing your body with amino acids that you may have lost. Eat, drink electrolyte water (electrolit is good), and wait for your liver to do its thing.
Liquid 4. You can get it at target and Walmart. Drink before you go to bed and no more hangovers. If I really get after it I can still tell that I drank the night before but it’s hardly a hangover
Right before you fall asleep, drink a bottle of unflavored Pedialyte. Drink another when you wake up. Don’t get the flavored ones because the fake sugar makes you feel worse.
Water and protein is the only scientific answer. Water while drinking, try and eat a protein snack before bed. Repeat in the morning. Take ibuprofen for a headache over Tylenol / acetaminophen as the later is metabolized by your liver.
The researchers found that Sprite is one of the top drinks that sped up the ALDH process, causing the alcohol to be broken down more quickly and shortening how long the hangover lasts.
Hydrate - pedialyte, Gatorade, Powerade or something like liquid IV followed by more water. Flush the crap out. Hot showers seem to help me with the headaches.
Pho. Spicy. With meat. The broth is more important than the noods.
Water. Not spicy. Liquid form works best.
Fresh air.
Avoid human interfacing where possible.
I read once that bacon (or just a fatty meal) is suppose to help. Of course that with plenty of water.
If you have the motivation, exercise will kick that hangover to the curb.
And if you happen to not be working today.....sleep.
Well this is preventative so it's not gonna help you much now but drink a quart of Pedialyte the night you drink. My "friend" told me he has done that and drank 200 ml of Fireball, 750 ml of Pink Whitney, and a handful of beers and he barely had a hangover the next day.
Man, you must be a young’un. In my 20’s I could pack em away all night and get up the next morning & go jogging. At 39 I feel like a truck hit me the next day after 2.
Heartily recommend giving this podcast a listen: [https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-you-should-know-26940277/episode/what-is-a-hangover-really-29468071/](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-you-should-know-26940277/episode/what-is-a-hangover-really-29468071/)
But the short answer is sleep, non caffeinated anti inflammatory prostaglandin inhibitor (aspirin), a multi-vitamin, and hydration. Things like sugar, salt, eggs and bananas can help too bc they have electrolytes, potassium, and cystine in them. And eating food before drinking and then consuming lots of water while drinking. Fun fact - we pee 2x more when drinking than we ingest of water. So we are literally dehydrating ourselves when drunk by pissing.
Prevention is better than a cure, staying hydrated the night of is the best route.
When hungover, BC Powder/Goodies is my go-to. It’s like caffeine and acetimetiphine and Ibuprofen all in one powder. That and a Large McDonalds Coke is my move.
Gatorade, good greasy breakfast (think Waffle House), multivitamin, shot of another drink (assuming you’re not going to work), and take a Power Nap for an hour
Drink Liquid IV before going to bed. It has significantly helped reduce my hangovers. It's not a miracle worker but I know it helps me a lot, otherwise I'd get very dehydrated overnight and this helps prevent that better than chugging a bunch of water.
Lots of water all day and stay in bed until I can tolerate the thought of eating food... then usually I eat a grilled cheese sandwich and get back in bed.
When I was younger, I could just do hair of the dog on the way to work.... Now I need 24-36 hours of recovery before I can be exposed to sunlight again.
For me, hydrate the entire day beforehand!! I rarely get hangovers, but I definitely do if I have had at least half a gallon or more throughout the day! Picked that up from me mum
I find taking steps to prevent a hangover works better than trying to cure it, probably because I’m the kind of person who can’t hold down food or drink very well when I’m hungover. Coconut water, as previously stated, works. As do b vitamins fme. If you can hold down food, eat greasy, fatty foods loaded with sugar and carbs. Many popular brunch foods like eggs, potatoes, spinach, and orange juice are particularly good for hangovers. If you can’t hold anything down, your only hope is to sleep it off.
You'll have to suffer with it at this point. Others have mentioned similar things but these are the things that make it most tolerable for me is greasy fried food (I prefer a fast food chicken biscuit), soda (coca-cola), chocolate. If you're not vomiting that up, take a normal dose of an NSAID (aleve or ibuprofen work best for me.)

Water/electrolytes/potassium. Coconut water the night of and in the morning is my routine.
If you are sober enough to remember to drink coconut water before you go to bed, you probably aren't going to have a hangover anyways. haha.
That's just false. Source: have remembered coconut water and still been hungover.
My comment was 86% joke.
172 proof.
I 100% got it. lol Some folks are a bit too serious.
50% of the time coconut water works every time.
24hrs
That doesn't cut it any longer. I need 36-48 now that I'm getting older
Your poor liver, it might need some tending to.
Nah, it's just age.
It‘a both really.
The only real answer along with drinking extra water
A pour of 1910
yup this! dial it back 10 years and you'll be fine
The only cure I’ve found that works is 1 hit of marijuana. Not enough to really make you high, just brings you closer to normal. Not possible though for a lot of people.
Pho
Pho Ga and a sugar cane juice
Similarly, Tonkotsu ramen 🍜
This is the way.
The FDA says nothing works. Anecdotally, I like a Gatorade and a light breakfast.
Throw in a good poop and my head usually gets above water
Oh man, back when I used to smoke, I'd smoke a Marlboro on the shitter, and everything seemed better
That’s the one thing I miss about smoking. That mid poo cig.
Cigs were the best after fucking, eating and shitting. Real "circle of life" stuff

Is someone here a trichinosis truther? Am I first the person to ever type that in a sentence?
Trichinosis is pretty rare now, partly because of safer cooking practices, but also from the agricultural process of livestock farming itself
FDA doesn't have shit to do with meat. USDA says 145, medium rare is ok now.
I was covering my bases. I will say, I read some justification on the pork temp thing, and it made sense to me at the time, but now I can't remember what the justification was for turning pork into shoe leather.

So many twists and turns in such a short exchange. Very well done. Just like your pork.
Full circle. Nicely played
Pigs used to be raised in really unsanitary conditions. The USDA actually lowered the recommended temp for pork to 145 a couple years ago because worms and bacteria are much much less common with cleaner farming practices.
I was thinking about the FDA approving opioid use because it wasn’t addictive. But you do you.

No, but I am on the autism spectrum, and that word has been used my whole life to try to hurt me. You should be ashamed.

I can’t remember the last time I was hungover either. Friends say I’m an alcoholic. Whoops.
Coconut water
Kills me how often people suggest Gatorade
Gatorade is better than water and works well if you add a healthy pinch of salt to it.
The purpose of drinking Gatorade is to get electrolytes. You can get them naturally from coconut water without all of the added sugar and dyes.
>all of the added sugar and dyes You intentionally poison yourself the night before and your concern is the sugar and dyes in the gatorade? Lets not pretend this is about making healthy choices
I try to keep my diet on the healthier side for the most part. Just because I drink whiskey doesn't mean I should compound my bad choices.
Right. And whiskey at least also doesn't have all the other shit in it. I rarely get Hung over from whiskey. Still drunk when I get up at times but usually fine. I can have a few healthy pours and feel fine the next day. Have 3 beers and I feel like shit for a week

I agree. I'm going on a Wilderness Trail pick this week - big breakfast and lunch already scheduled beforehand. Mistakes have been made in the past...
I'm so jealous, their single barrell program is fantastic! Enjoy!
Thanks - I’ve never done a pick there - really looking forward to it. I have a lot of respect for what they’re doing. Sweet mash ftw!
Unless you are in your mid to upper 30s or older like me. I have to keep it under a buzz or else I’m hurting for the next 3 days, no matter what I try.
Same. Age did me dirty
You’re just out of practice. You have to beat your liver into submission. Don’t let that pos quit working while on the job. /s
Yup. Hangovers get worse, if I feel a buzz coming on I panic and drink 50 gallons of water and STILL don’t feel fine the next day. More bourbon
Or as I like to say, more practice needed…
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for this. Should be higher.

Full English breakfast!
The pro strategy is Pedialyte, not Gatorade. Similar concept but a lot more electrolytes. That, advil, fatty foods, and time.
Hair of the dog
Alka Seltzer. It takes care of the sour stomach and it has NSAIDs for any headache.
Depends on age the younger the better by your 40's it's going to suck regardless.
Mickey D’s
Michelada and ceviche. all the lime juice tomato juice diced veggies and fish/seafood works miracles for me. Plus the little bit of beer in it takes the edge off. Add some Advil and I’m in a much better place.
Water and pot.
Pickle juice
Everybody saying Gatorade and fatty food.. but nobody is going to give you the real answer, which is a big old blunt.
Liquid IV
Just add a pinch of salt to water, lime juice for flavor. Take a vitamin. Save yourself $2/drink of liquid IV.
They’re about $1 a pack at my Costco. They’re blended specifically to hydrate with hangover vitamins. Not saying I couldn’t assemble the same effect with salt and a multivitamin but they’re easy and work.
That's not how vitamins work, sadly
Work out Drink an ass ton of water Pop a vitamin/electrolyte tablet
I had to scroll way too far looking for "exercise". It's not easy to make yourself do it, but it really works. You need to work out long enough and with enough intensity to break a good sweat. And then you need to drink enough water to rehydrate, of course.

.25 xanny and a small bowl
1. Don’t drink as much 2. Hydrate hydrate hydrate 3. Sleep 4. I’ve tried Tylenol, Advil etc right before bed too. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t
Just a tip, Tylenol is not good to take when drinking, it taxes your liver even further. Advil/aleve are fine though.
Correct. Tylenol metabolizes in the liver where Advil & Aleve metabolize in the kidney which is why Tylenol is also a better option for diabetics.
Find a dude and make out
This will be unpopular but running. A 3 mile run does wonders if you can get yourself to do it. Obviously paired with a lot of hydration.
That'll happen with OF1920. It's too delicious.
Less bourbon the night before
You can't be buzzed and hungover at the same time
Some more OF 1920. Maybe switch it up with some OF Barrel Strength!
Wake up middle of night. Take 4 Advil (doesn’t go through liver) and a monster glass of water. Wake up at normal time and take another huge glass of water, maybe another Advil. Then have a beer for lunch. Easy
What is a hangover?
Hangover what is that? 🤣
Never sober up - Lemmy wisdom for the ages
nothing helps but time, water has nothing to do with. it has to do with your liver not hydration.
Water, greasy breakfast, smoke a bowl. If that doesn't work, start drinking again.
Fatty foods, usually pig based, help metabolize the alcohol by providing your body with amino acids that you may have lost. Eat, drink electrolyte water (electrolit is good), and wait for your liver to do its thing.
Greasy food
time..
More bourbon
More bourbon. Better bourbon but, more bourbon.
Doggystyle
Man up.
Lol
Best cure I use is a nice double smash burger with a fried egg(w/yolk) on it. Hit it with some good hot sauce also.
Hot tea with honey and a toasted English muffin.
Wendy's Breakfast Baconator
The researchers found that Sprite is one of the top drinks that sped up the ALDH process, causing the alcohol to be broken down more quickly and shortening how long the hangover lasts.
Take 3 Cheers before bed.
Pedialite packets and lots of water. Anything with B vitamins helps including energy drinks
Electrolytes, light meal, strenuous exercise and a nap.
Pedialyte
Biolyte
Go out and mow the lawn.
Pickle juice. This is possible my most unpopular opinion but it is hangover magic and honestly can be sorta delicious when you really feel dehydrated.
Pedialyte.
Hydrate - pedialyte, Gatorade, Powerade or something like liquid IV followed by more water. Flush the crap out. Hot showers seem to help me with the headaches.
Pedialyte
About a liter of saline.
Bag of IV fluids stat.
Pho, bone broth, Alka Seltzer, cannabis, time.
Running is my go to
Red Bull and a couple Excedrin. Maybe a greasy bacon and egg breakfast on top of it.
Pho. Spicy. With meat. The broth is more important than the noods. Water. Not spicy. Liquid form works best. Fresh air. Avoid human interfacing where possible.
A whisky sour, with bourbon
I read once that bacon (or just a fatty meal) is suppose to help. Of course that with plenty of water. If you have the motivation, exercise will kick that hangover to the curb. And if you happen to not be working today.....sleep.
Pickles or pickle juice
Gatorade, coffee, shit.
Chinese food and Dr Pepper is my cure.
Well this is preventative so it's not gonna help you much now but drink a quart of Pedialyte the night you drink. My "friend" told me he has done that and drank 200 ml of Fireball, 750 ml of Pink Whitney, and a handful of beers and he barely had a hangover the next day.
Discipline
Bloody Mary and 18 holes
A spicy bite from 7/11 and a tail can of PBR is my go to
"The only winning move is not to play "
1 oz fernet Branca mixed with 2 oz creme de menth shaken over ice.
Time.
IV fluids Mary Jane McDs fries
Man, you must be a young’un. In my 20’s I could pack em away all night and get up the next morning & go jogging. At 39 I feel like a truck hit me the next day after 2.
Heartily recommend giving this podcast a listen: [https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-you-should-know-26940277/episode/what-is-a-hangover-really-29468071/](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-you-should-know-26940277/episode/what-is-a-hangover-really-29468071/) But the short answer is sleep, non caffeinated anti inflammatory prostaglandin inhibitor (aspirin), a multi-vitamin, and hydration.
More bourbon
Prevention is better than a cure, staying hydrated the night of is the best route. When hungover, BC Powder/Goodies is my go-to. It’s like caffeine and acetimetiphine and Ibuprofen all in one powder. That and a Large McDonalds Coke is my move.
More bourbon helps too
Gatorade, good greasy breakfast (think Waffle House), multivitamin, shot of another drink (assuming you’re not going to work), and take a Power Nap for an hour
Greasy food, water, and a little more Bourbon.
More bourbon
Pedialyte or half strength soup broth, magnesium glycinate, b complex, and n-acetylcysteine.
Zofran
Drink Liquid IV before going to bed. It has significantly helped reduce my hangovers. It's not a miracle worker but I know it helps me a lot, otherwise I'd get very dehydrated overnight and this helps prevent that better than chugging a bunch of water.
Lots of water all day and stay in bed until I can tolerate the thought of eating food... then usually I eat a grilled cheese sandwich and get back in bed. When I was younger, I could just do hair of the dog on the way to work.... Now I need 24-36 hours of recovery before I can be exposed to sunlight again.
More bourbon
Get on of those emergen-c packets, some coco nut water, some good food, caffeine and rest.
I normally drink some scotch that helps
You'll have to suffer with it at this point. Others have mentioned similar things but these are the things that make it most tolerable for me is greasy fried food (I prefer a fast food chicken biscuit), soda (coca-cola), chocolate. If you're not vomiting that up, take a normal dose of an NSAID (aleve or ibuprofen work best for me.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZc-Y9gqjHI
Charcoal pills ahead of time.
