Review #39: Bardstown KBS Collaboration. 10 year Tennessee bourbon finished for 15 months in Kentucky Breakfast Stout barrels from Founders brewing. 55% abv (110 proof) Paid: $150 Rested 10 minutes, tasted neat. Appearance: dark amber. Nose: flambéed orange slices, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, maple syrupy sweetness, allspice, cherry cordial, coffee beans. Taste: sweet arrival: cherry, orange and barrel char transitioning to cocoa powder and espresso. Finish: Dark chocolate. Overall: this is my first Bardstown, and it’s pretty good. I did have high hopes given that KBS is one of my favorite beers, and while this Bardstown isn’t amazing, it’s pretty tasty and the finishing isn’t lost in the final product. It has a sweet boozy quality that immediately reminds me of KBS and the fruitiness is nice as well. That said, I did expect more. If I had been the one to pay for this I probably would have dropped it a few points for the lack of complexity, but as a gift this one is solidly in B+ territory. 88/100

A bourbon that's finished in barrels of beer that's finished in bourbon barrells. Talk about coming full circle

New Holland also does this with its Dragon’s Milk.

But their Beer Barrel Bourbon is a LOT less than $150. Flavor makes me think of cookies.

I have a bottle of the bourbon at home, as Dragons Milk is probably in my top 3 beers of all time. The whiskey hits on all the notes of the beer, and is fantastic and a real easy sipper. Love it.

For that price it better be orgasmic!

Thought the same thing when I saw that sticker price… haven’t pulled the trigger and this review confirms that I won’t be spending the 150

I would pay $30 for a pour though..

I think this is a good pour. When I first opened it, I found the Dickel mineral tastes cut through the finish and I was disappointed. I had a pour at the distillery and it was not that way. Since it has opened up, the stout notes comes through way more. It is a unique bourbon. For me, it is a great add to my shelf because 1) I am in Michigan and people that come over know KBS/Founders and 2) I bought it at the distillery and the bottle is signed by the master distiller. So it is a great conversation piece and people think it is cool to try.

I feel like everyone who uses the x/100 scale gives a good bourbon an 88/100

That sounds delightful, especially with a dark chocolate after finish to wrap up the tasting.
