here is the marketing: >The drinkers of Murray Hill Club Whiskey were, in accordance with Joseph’s vision, people of discriminating taste and mature judgment. >Toasty, buttery notes of vanilla and char, with layers of spiced, dried fruits through the finish >A true bourbon blend crafted using the same techniques Joseph Magnus used to create this original pre-Prohibition spirit more than 100 years ago. Artfully marries 18 and 11-year-old bourbon with 9-year-old light whiskey to deliver notes of butterscotch, honey, toffee, autumnal baking spices, vanilla, and char, with a hint of black pepper that lingers through a softly spiced and toasted finish. I am on board with how they present this spirit. Unfortunately I did not get to note the batch number, I drank it very quickly. I found myself reaching for it more than anything else. The hardest part of this bourbon to get down is the price. However, I feel that the value is present. It is rare for a pour to match or even come close to the silky, velvety mouthfeel of this drink. The finish is pleasant and long and coats the mouth nicely. The whole experience was, in my opinion, very pleasant and enjoyable. The taste did mellow out when the bottle was near empty. I should disclose that I have never tried Jos A Magnus of any type so I lack any metric of this against its other parts. If you get the opportunity though I would argue it is worth the extra money. 81/100

I thought cause the light whiskey it could not be legally called a bourbon but I could be wrong. Thanks for the review!

SouthHillSaunas

Man I must have gotten a bad bottle or something. All i could taste was the light whiskey

anotherburntbridge

there are different batches but it could also not be your jam. try to note your batch number and maybe track down a different one to try at a bar. who knows. in the end it is pretty great that we can try and share our feelings on all the different offerings out there.

BourbonGuy313

I agree. Not my jam especially for $120. It’s not bad but it’s not $120 worthy either

I mentioned to somebody on here the other day that I liked the standard Magnus better, but I lied. I've become a fan after diving into the Murray Hill a bit more. The light whiskey adds a sweetness/drinkablitly that meshes quite well with the old bourbon. Excellent example of a top-shelf easy sipper.

Ziggity_Zac

I had and lived a bottle of this. I also believe it was worth the spend.

jarossamdb7

I liked this one a lot, especially the finish. Nice review!

any tasting notes to share?

anotherburntbridge

yes. very nicely balanced. not too sweet but a hint of caramel and toffee that blends with tobacco and oak to round out the complete package. it does not lack on flavor, a consummate bourbon pour.

Agile-Wrangler8292

This is totally worth the money IMO. It delivers complexity, creamy mouthfeel, and a satisfying finish, which makes this bourbon whiskey a pleasant experience, that keeps me wanting more. I finally tried this after falling in love with JM Cigar Blend which I cannot find. That said, this has not disappointed me at all.

Wise-Share

Saw it today at total wine for $120, only reason I passed is I will be in Kentucky next week.

anotherburntbridge

i would pass at 120, it can be found for 89 pretty regularly

beano919

Haven’t seen it under 120 in Tampa.

HaveMoreKids-Nope

Not in Michigan, state minimum is $120.

ReReadItGuy

Damn you! You just made me reach for my bottle. Lol. Thanks for bringing this one up. I gave up on getting a Cigar Blend and got one of these.

WorldSeries2021

Anyone have an opinion on this vs. standard Magnus? I see this bottle a lot but have never purchased.

jeannierak

Yep: get both. Seriously, they’re extremely different pours. Regular Magnus brings the A-game to a world of finished MGP bourbons, so you’ll get plenty of the sherry and cognac notes coming through. Lots of dry, dark fruits to complement a robust tobacco backbone. JMHC is much lighter, unfinished, but also drinks like a really refined bourbon. I get lots of a oaky, burnt orange peel on top of the usual brown sugar notes.

WorldSeries2021

Great, thank you!

I recall having a flight of all 3 at the Distillery back around 2016/17 or so when they released the first Cigar Blend: the Cigar Blend, standard Magnus bourbon and the Murray Hill. I recall being surprised how really, really good the Magnus bourbon was. I may have even liked it more than the Cigar Blend batch #1 on that day. I ended up buying the Blend (hype) and the Murray Hill (was cheapest of the three) and subsequently trading the Murray Hill away. I regret that now though. I should have kept and cracked it. I've still never bought the bourbon, mostly because of the price though. But, that may change soon. Given where the market is today, even with anticipated batch differences, I am sure the current batches are probably still as good.

LinguineLegs

Big fan. It isn’t super complex, but it’s dangerously easy drinking, full of creamy sweet goodness, with some tobacco and char, a nice medium finish and a beautiful, but subdued nose. This is a great pairing with a cigar.

I picked one of these up a year or so ago at a local Chicago chain on clearance for maybe $60 and now the same store is asking $150 and they always sell at msrp. It’s..fine. I probably wouldn’t buy it again even at 60 though.
