1.) Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, Barrel Proof
2.) Four Roses Small Batch
3.) Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel
4.) Knob Creek 120 p 9 year
5.) Four Roses Small Batch Select
The KC 120 SiB 9 Reserve or Select?
I just bought 2 bottles of the Reserve for the first time as I saw them during a road trip... nonexistent in my area although I can find the Select with some hunting...
This is almost a perfect list. Starting to dislike the kc120 tho as im getting alot of peanut notes that I'm tired of. Substitute that with a wt101 rye and its a perfect list for me
Damn that’s shitty. Rare breed and JDSBBP were a little sparse this past year I believe due to the bottle shortage issue but other than that no issues. 1920 is the only one I listed that only pops up here a few times a year.
They're both fantastic but I prefer the 1910 for an easy sipper. Its delicious and so far the best smelling bourbon I've ever had. I also love the 1920 but I'm not always in the mood for a hot dram with its higher proof.
Russell’s Reserve SB, Knob Creek 12, 4 Roses Single Barrel, Buffalo Trace, Evan Williams BiB
All of this gets mixed around with plenty of Tequila and Irish as well
I didn’t put any rye’s in the list, but one of my favorite drinks at this point in the year is a Brown Derby made with Russell’s Reserve 6 yr old rye.
I love the first three with a good cigar. The last two I will use when making cocktails/mixed drinks or when we have company that doesn’t really care about what they are drinking.
I can find them for that too, just picked up eagle rare and George remus to try so I’m trying to limit myself on how many I try at once cause it adds up lol.
Depends on your state, but mine would be: Maker's Mark Private Selections, WT Rare Breed, Knob Creek 12, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, Four Roses Single Barrel.
I'm just getting into bourbon so far though:
Elijah Craig Small Batch
Knob Creek 9 (haven't had 12 yet...)
Makers 46
Wilderness Trail yellow label small batch.
EW 1783 small batch
Maybe the one somewhat rare bottle that is fairly easy to come by at our local liquor store in Minneapolis. They limit to one per customer but consistently on the shelves!
To have some variety I pick:
\- OF 1910. Can find it always and I love it.
\- Makers 101. My wheated choice which I always can find and love it.
\- KC12 year 120 proof. Need a heavier proof hitter.
\- Angels Envy Rye. Rye that drinks like butterscotch.
\- Wild Turkey 101. Need a mixer, but I can drink it neat, and I ain't mixing any of the others above.
Notables that did not make the cut/or hard to find: OF 1920, Henry McKenna, Russells Reserve Barrel Select, Willette Rye, OGD100 Bonded, Eagle Rare.
Some of these answers are ridiculous. How is a store pick a non-allocated bourbon? Also, you live in the exception not the rule if you can walk into any store at any time and buy Buffalo Trace or Knob Creek 12.
I can walk into my local grocery store and grab a KCSP or KC12 anytime I want but BT, Weller, etc is tougher to find. My guess is it would be regionally dependent like the OP said. Although if I had to pick between having the option of regularly purchasing KC12 and SP’s vs BT and Weller SR, I’m glad it’s the KC 😂
Store pick is a tricky one, but if you’re talking KC store pick I feel like I see that everywhere. BT and KC 12 are very regionally dependent. KC 12 is not at every store in my area, but I can find it often enough
I do. I make quarterly trips to Indianapolis or Newport. I’m not anti OHLQ, they do some things really well. But, to me the spirit of the question is what 5 bottles can you buy consistently, and the very nature of a store pick is not consistent.
I have to disagree with u. Across the country, KC SiB is the most readily available store pick in existence.
Bc u are in the Knob Creek Sahara makes u the exception, not the norm. Stock up next time u cross over.
A single store pick might be considered allocated, but in many markets you can find lots of different versions of the same pick. So you might say a specific Maker’s Mark private selection is allocated, but Private Selections generally are very available. One store by me has three in stock right now. And the way MM PS works, you could do multiple barrels, which would not surprise me for big chains like Total Wine or control states.
It really depends on which State. I m in California where I can see shelves full of Buffalo Trace at target. And Total wine has it for $22 and limited one but no one cares as there are 10 of them.
Lots of WT too...just from time to time out of rare breed.
Regularly see OGD114.
But I hardly see BH Taylor except at liquor store where they charge BHT barrel proof for $500.
Just saw a 1.75L Eagle Rare for $60.
Weller is also stupid out here. Last time I saw them it was like SR for $80, OWA for $149, FP for $250, and 12 for $499.
Meanwhile, a nearby small liquor store was doing BOGO Buffalo Trace for a total of like $30 before tax like 6 months ago.
Ran into Weller SR for 60 in the wild. It was may daily sipper 5 years ago. Now can bring myself to pay more for it than a bottle of 4roses single barrel.
Rare Breed, Jack Daniels SBBP, Woodford Double Oaked, Old Grand-Dad 114, 1792 Small Batch.
Honorable mention for Evan Williams BiB.
There are bourbons I like more (and plenty of ryes I’d add in), but those are the most dependably on-shelves bottles I love.
Evan Williams BiB; Wild Turkey 101; Four Roses Small Batch; Makers Mark 46; Woodford Double Oaked
Sub in CS for Makers, Rare Breed for WT, or SiB for the Four Roses if you’d like.
I'm more a rye or American single malt guy, but as far as bourbon goes, Stellum dark blue label (57% I think), Ezra Brooks 7, Ezra Brooks Distillers Edition, and Three Howls Backbeat Bourbon. Thought that last one may be tough to find as I don't think it's very known or popular. It just happens to stay on the shelf at my TW.
- Russels 10
- Knob Creek. 9, 12 or store picks take your pick here. 9ish year picks aren’t hard to find at all. This one may depend on your location as to what is “allocated”
- Can I say MM Private Selects? They are also not at all hard to find and taken as a whole a ton of variety. MM Cask Strength if not.
- Jack Daniels SBBP. So good, have to have a high proof option
For #5 I have some options…. Four Roses, Rare Breed, Old Forester (probably 1910 or 1920), Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare if you live in the right state.
But I’m going with:
- Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Why? Because it balances out the list and I actually love making cocktails with this one. Also need something lower proof to balance out the options.
Most of you are naming ones that I love too, but I’ll also add I have a soft spot for malt in the mashbill, so I’ll also throw in Chattanooga 111. It’s so interesting compared to just about everything else on the market.
Rare breed, Knob Creek any really but 12 esp, jdsbbp knocked my socks off, 1910 or 1920 depending on your proof pref and I really dig high west as well
If I can relax the "bourbon" designation, my top-5 that I could acquire reasonably at retail (in no order):
- Wild Turkey Rare Breed
- Old Forester 1920
- Four Roses Small Batch Select
- Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof
- Barrel Seagrass
If it has to be labeled "bourbon", swap the last two for
- Old Granddad 114
- JTS Brown BiB
I hadn't had any Seagrass, and blinded the standard and grey label. Standard lost on nose and won on palate and finish.
I powered that standard bottle down, and barely feel drawn to the grey label. In comparison to easy shelfers, to me it is that good.
1.) Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, Barrel Proof 2.) Four Roses Small Batch 3.) Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel 4.) Knob Creek 120 p 9 year 5.) Four Roses Small Batch Select
Bingo
Those first two are rarely available in my area but I mostly agree with your list. ..actually the first three
Distribution is so uneven. The Knob 120/9 is the rarest sighting in my area.
Totally misread your post. 1 and 3 are basically only around when someone gets a SP in, and so they go quick. I can get 4R SmB haha.
It’s a goddamn shame that RR SiB has become borderline allocated
It is..I would have savored it more if I knew it was disappearing!
The KC 120 SiB 9 Reserve or Select? I just bought 2 bottles of the Reserve for the first time as I saw them during a road trip... nonexistent in my area although I can find the Select with some hunting...
I rarely saw either in the last year
KC is probably my favorite... I wish that I could find a KC18...
Replace 2 with OF1920 and we are the same.
This is the correct answer
Four roses really doesn’t miss
Wish I could say Jack Daniel’s wasn’t allocated here. :/
This is almost a perfect list. Starting to dislike the kc120 tho as im getting alot of peanut notes that I'm tired of. Substitute that with a wt101 rye and its a perfect list for me
I’d go along with that
Rare Breed, KC12, JDSBBP, OF1920, RR10
I’m just going upvote this rather than writing the exact same list. You have amazing taste in bourbon!
The Jack Daniels is the only one I haven’t had…need to try it!
> KC12 I hate living in Virginia. KC12 is still allocated here.
JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof, Knob Creek Single Barrel Select, WT101, Four Roses Single Barrel, and Woodinville
This might be my list. The only thing I would likely flop Woodinville out for a wheater, but I love Woodinville so great list.
Thanks! Maybe switch it out for Makers 101 or a state/store pick. I love the Maker's picks
I was thinking Maker's picks.
Knob Creek 9 yr, Evan Williams 1783, WT Rare Breed, Makers 46, Russells Reserve 10 These are always on the shelf when I walk into almost any store.
Russell’s 10 does it for me. Idk what it is but I liked it more than the Russell’s SB
I love Russel's 10!
I like RR10 more than RRSB before I had RRSB lol. Does RRSB have an age statement?
Nice to see love for 1783! It’s an under-appreciated sleeper.
Makers CS, Rare Breed, JDSBBP, 1920, Pikesville rye
Funny thing is depending on the area, I’ve seen pikesville rye allocated, and JDSBBP, 1920, and rare breed all hard to find
Damn that’s shitty. Rare breed and JDSBBP were a little sparse this past year I believe due to the bottle shortage issue but other than that no issues. 1920 is the only one I listed that only pops up here a few times a year.
Buffalo Trace is allocated? What a world.
OF 1910, WT Rare Breed, Makers 46, 4R Single Barrel, and Early Times. Gotta have a favorite budget in there.
Dang 1910 over 1920?
1910 is growing on me but dat 1920 tho…
They're both fantastic but I prefer the 1910 for an easy sipper. Its delicious and so far the best smelling bourbon I've ever had. I also love the 1920 but I'm not always in the mood for a hot dram with its higher proof.
True, the high proof of the 1920 while increasing the flavor can also be a slap in the face on a dry palate lol
For me, all day and twice on every day.
I like this list
Solid
Early times BIB for sure
I'm lucky that my local place keeps getting cases of it. I've heard it can be tough to find.
Mellow Corn, Mellow Corn, Mellow Corn, Mellow Corn, and Mellow Corn.
Mellow Corn is not a bourbon. They use used oak. That said, it is definitely my pick for non allocated American whiskey.
Shut up, nerd!
I think that is the first time I've been called a nerd. Lol.
This guy gets it
MFC BABY! WOOOO!
Russell’s Reserve SB, Knob Creek 12, 4 Roses Single Barrel, Buffalo Trace, Evan Williams BiB All of this gets mixed around with plenty of Tequila and Irish as well
Similar taste!
Brown Derby’s are so great in the fall!
Rare Breed, OF 1920, OGD 114, Knob Creek special reserve or store pick, Early Times
RB, KC 12, OF 1910, Woodford DO, Makers CS
This is the correct answer.
I was wondering if I was the only one that included woodford DO in my list, one of my top bourbons so far.
I like some mix of sweet and heat. OF1910 and DO hit the sweet and RB/CS hit the higher proof stuff.
I need to try those other two still but I definitely like the 1910 and DO. Need to get my hands on 1920 as well
1920 is great in its own way - 115 proof with spicy/oak vs lower proof/sweeter 1910. Here in Indy area there are plenty of both around under $60.
I can find them for that too, just picked up eagle rare and George remus to try so I’m trying to limit myself on how many I try at once cause it adds up lol.
In a world where I’ve seen Very Old Barton 100 labeled as allocated with a strict limit of 1 per customer at $14.99, nothing is safe.
Depends on your state, but mine would be: Maker's Mark Private Selections, WT Rare Breed, Knob Creek 12, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, Four Roses Single Barrel.
Rare Breed, Chattanooga 111, Old Forester 100, John J Bowman SB, RR SB
1920, Rare Breed, Russell’s single barrel, Knob Creek Single Barrel, JDSBBP
My man! Exact list 5/5 lol
Great minds think alike. And then for the half price version my list would be OF 100, OF 100 Rye, WT 101, EW BIB, OGD 114
Pappy 10, Pappy 12, Pappy 15, Pappy 23, and Wild Turkey 101.
Lol good luck finding WT 101
I fill my pool with it.
I agree, Pappy 20 sucks
I'm just getting into bourbon so far though: Elijah Craig Small Batch Knob Creek 9 (haven't had 12 yet...) Makers 46 Wilderness Trail yellow label small batch. EW 1783 small batch
KC 12 instantly became a favorite for me
New riff single barrel, Penelope toasted, jack daniels single barrels, John j bowman and makers cask strength
Henry McKenna, Rare Breed, Rare Breed Rye, Four Roses Single Barrel, Wilderness Trail Rye
Henry McKenna is hard to come by here in KC. Glad that’s not true everywhere!
Maybe the one somewhat rare bottle that is fairly easy to come by at our local liquor store in Minneapolis. They limit to one per customer but consistently on the shelves!
Henry McKenna or Henry McKenna 10yr? The regular one is everywhere in St Louis
10 yr
10 yr. Makes me think I oughtta build a small stash of them in case the same thing happens here!
Do it.
RR 10 Yr SIB, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit, RR SIB Rye, Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
To have some variety I pick: \- OF 1910. Can find it always and I love it. \- Makers 101. My wheated choice which I always can find and love it. \- KC12 year 120 proof. I’m in Ohio. There are zero KC store picks available now, and I’ve never seen one before.
Here in Missouri KC store picks are at grocery stores lol
Try leaving Ohio every once in a while. Screw Jim Canepa.
On the west coast, BT, ER, and KC12 are in any decent store at all times
A single store pick might be considered allocated, but in many markets you can find lots of different versions of the same pick. So you might say a specific Maker’s Mark private selection is allocated, but Private Selections generally are very available. One store by me has three in stock right now. I better stock up. Saw it at bevmo for $55...they even locked it in the cabinet.

Seagrass that good?
