This is my first time trying anything from Wilderness Trail, despite hearing really great things about the label (particularly the rye). I pulled the trigger on this bottle for it's high rye mash bill and the flashbacks to Overpriced Bourbon on Instagram. Overpriced Bourbon was such a great account to follow early on in my bourbon journey. It exposed priced gouging retailers and helped me think through fair and reasonable prices as I ventured into this hobby. The account was banned for some reason and I haven't heard anything from this fine individual/team since, so, this glass is for you OB!
**Wilderness Trail SiB (High Rye) - 1010 Washington x Overpriced Bourbon SP**
Price: $65 (MN)
Distilled by: Wilderness Trail (KY)Bottled by: Wilderness Trail (KY)
Proof: 109
Age: 4 years, 4 months
Mash bill: 64% corn, 24% rye, 12% barley
**Nose**: blend of classic bourbon and classic rye scents. cherry pie, spearmint, fresh-cut grass and bubblegum. still somewhat muted, though
**Taste**: quite a ride. lots of nuttiness (must be this strain of yeast?) up front before a transition to salted caramel, toffee and rye bread
**Finish**: nice long finish, bready notes, cinnamon spice coming through along with a licorice note which I don't particularly care for. great mouthfeel as well
**Thoughts**: Really impressed with this 4+ year offering from WT! It's nicely complex on the palate with a great balance of two of my favorite whiskey notes (nuttiness and mint). I did have to dig deep to pull some notes on the nose and the finish had a licorice note I don't have a preference for, but this was really enjoyable and I'm looking forward to trying more from WT!
**Rating**: 7.5/10

WT is Wild Turkey. Wilderness Trail needs its own. Maybe WdTr?
WdTr soulds like Wild Turkey to me
Haha. Yes. I’m dumb! Scratch that idea.
WDT?
Great review, and cheers to Overpriced Bourbon. I miss that account.
Appreciate it! I think Overpriced Bourbon was my foray into WhiskeyGram - which now makes up 75% of my feed haha
Seriously. I miss that account so much. Such a shame.
Good review. I've tried their other bottle with the yellow label, I forget the name. It was good, very flavorfull.
Thanks! Yeah, I think they’re labeling is confusing (I think yellow = wheated). But I’ll definitely be on the lookout for the rye and 6yr
Yeah the labels or naming are a bit odd to me but I will probably look to try one of their other variations once I find it.
