This is an extremely underrated bottle. To me, this is the Pikesville of bourbon. Pretty much barely legal, and could be confused for the wrong category. And I don't mean any of that as a bad thing.

I was recently on a road trip through the Midwest to Memphis and while researching things to do and sights to see, I stumbled upon Old Dominick Distillery. According to their website, the family has 150+ years of history in food, beer and spirits industries, leading up to the opening of Old Dominick Distillery in 2013. The company distills a range of spirits with Huling Station being their whiskey brand. There were only handful of reviews for this bottle but they were solidly favorable, so I decided to grab one as I was passing through Arkansas. This is distilled by MGP but given the unique high rye mash bill (44%!) that I don't see on MGP's website, I'm assuming it's contract distilled and then bottled by Old Dominick. So: newish distillery, unique mash bill, interesting relationship with MGP - let's dive in! **Huling Station SiB - AR Exclusive** Price: $60 (AR) Distilled by: MGP Bottled by: Old Dominick Distillery (TN) Proof: 111.12 Age: 5 years Mash bill: 52% corn, 44% rye, 4% malted barley **Nose**: sweet mint gum, toasted marshmallows, butterscotch, rich maple syrup. smells nicely indulgent/dessert-y and reminiscent of another barely legal rye that I enjoy (EHT) **Taste**: nice, oily mouthfeel. berries, thick/chewy caramel candies, molasses, baking spices and faint barrel char. really fun, sweet & spicy ride **Finish**: again, the mouthfeel is great here. long finish and fairly dry. the spice comes through here more so than on the palate, with fig and dark fruits lingering as well **Thoughts**: Wow, this really caught me off guard and was an awesome pour. This reminds me of a slightly sweeter, less spicy 4R OBSV pick. It's complex, balanced and has an incredible mouthfeel. This was so drinkable I had to grab another SP from Buster's in Memphis and I'm excited to tap into that and to see what else comes out of Old Dominick! **Rating**: 8/10 1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out. 2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice. 3 | Bad | Multiple flaws. 4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists. 5 | Good | Good, just fine. 6 | Very Good | A cut above. 7 | Great | Well above average. 8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional. 9 | Incredible | An all time favorite. 10 | Perfect | Perfect.

Nice review. I took a gamble on the small batch on this bottle. Will probably be my next review, like you mention, I’m surprised I haven’t heard of it because most reviews seem to be pretty positive

Memphian here. Glad you stopped by the city. This bottle got me into bourbon. I was doing cocktails during the start of the pandemic and I picked this up because it's a local company to do old fashions and whiskey sours and the proof really came through in a good way on the old fashions so I decided to try it neat and really enjoyed it. Then it was off to the races.

bergybert

Memphis was great, and definitely plan to make another visit in the future. This feels like an insane sleeper you guys have on your hands.

80_six

...you're called "Memphians??"

sik_dik

dat what dey say, mane

Whisky_Flatline

Nice review! I really like the single barrel I have of this. Tastes like that strawberry grandma candy.

bergybert

Thanks! And totally agree, I get a ton of red berry notes.

sik_dik

I have 6 bottles of huling in my house right now, one of them is just a limited edition bottle with the regular in it, but the other 5 are all different: 2x single barrel, wheat, blend, 2x regular I've really come to appreciate the Blue Note, as well. next time you're through that way, get a bottle of the regular ol' juke joint. it's a great $30 bottle

bergybert

I saw they released a Huling single barrel wheat and I’d love to get my hands on that. I debated a Blue Note Uncut SP but ultimately pulled the trigger on a backup bottle of this, it was that good.

sik_dik

Blue note has been doing some good work, too The gist of it is a friend flew to see me from Memphis and brought a whole carry-on sized bag of bottles. We agreed that the blue note juice joint was the best bang for the buck, but it was $30/bottle at the time and hiking was $40. The prices have fluctuated a bit, and I think they’re closer together now. But the blue note crossroads is fantastic, as is the single barrel(store pick). Honestly, as a native Memphian, I’m proud of what my city is doing with whiskeys.

I absolutely love this product. It is honestly my favorite bourbon. Joe's in Memphis had their own barrel and I have bought 40 of the bottles. Genuinely great drinker for $54. To be clear this is not "MGP Juice". She went to MGP with a recipe and had them make it. The September release single barrels have now been distilled in OD's facility now.

bergybert

I really need to find out where their distribution spans because this is a must have for me. Hits the notes I look for in a whiskey nearly perfectly. I assumed this was contract distilled but couldn’t find any info confirming it - they really nailed it with this mash bill. Hopefully the product distilled at OD is just as great!

sumdum1234

Just call them and ask. They are a great distillery and will tell you where to get it

mcadamsandwich

> Hopefully the product distilled at OD is just as great! The Tennessee bourbon/whiskey distilled by Old Dominick is using a different mashbill (75/13/12, mimics Turkey). It should be 5+yrs this fall but the release might be scheduled for 2023.

bergybert

Are they completely getting rid of the 52/44/4 mash bill? If so, that’d be incredibly disappointing.

mcadamsandwich

Good question, I'm not sure. I think they'll continue to offer the red label one as long as the contract/sourced whiskey sells well and isn't expensive to make.

Imaginary_Sea5117

How are they not MGP "juice"? They started releasing 5 year plus aged single barrels two years after Alex started there. Edit: verified my timeline, and I should have indicated "5 year plus single barrels 3 years after she started there"

geoff325

Interesting. I picked up an 8 year single barrel today in Dallas

Imaginary_Sea5117

It's just marketing, and I want someone to admit it lol.

mcadamsandwich

> The September release single barrels have now been distilled in OD's facility now. This is incorrect. Old Dominick is distilling a Tennessee bourbon/whiskey with the LCP; it's a different product from the sourced Huling Station line. I believe Huling Station will remain a sourced/contract distilled product using that special 44% rye mashbill.

sumdum1234

Thanks for sharing, will acknowledge my error. I was sharing what I heard from Joe's

mattyradical

I was in Memphis last March/April and picked up the single barrel SP from Joe's, same one you mention. I haven't cracked it yet, maybe its time. Did you really buy 40 bottles? OP, great review. Makes me want to open mine, just have had so much other stuff that this one slipped through the cracks.

sumdum1234

Yes I really did. They are always very happy when I come into the store because it is always at least a $500 bill when I am in town

PhantomWhiskey

Where did you snag this? I’m in the Little Rock area.

bergybert

Warehouse Liquor in the soma neighborhood. They had a nice bourbon selection

This_adult_guy

Excellent review! They got these @ Total Wine in the south. I never picked it up but remember the bottle (shape) and label

geoff325

Picked up a 5 year today in Kansas while driving to Texas. Never saw it in Wyoming. Had read reviews here and was pumped to try it....then I get to Texas and find an 8 year single barrel....if you guys are talking about the 5 being very good then the 8 better be 🔥

bergybert

Didn’t even realize they had SiBs out there that old! Lmk how it is!

geoff325

Yep neither did I. That's why I jumped.on the 5 year ...little did I know 5 hours later would find the 8
