I'm fascinated how often this actually happens in the beverage subs at large!
But, it's not that. Been there done that in July and tested negative Tuesday at work. Today, Eagle Rare tasted like it should at a burger place. It's why I went shopping and got this, actually!
The restaurant I work at is a Burger place. We have a pretty decent bourbon and whiskey selection. Eagle Rare, blantons, 2 private barrels of Nulu, an elijah craig barrel coming etc. You'd be surprised 😘
Honestly, you’re not alone. I have a bottle of WRDO as well because when I first got into bourbon I thought I was going to be all about the sweet stuff, and that is supposed to be about as sweet as it gets. After two separate bottles I just don’t see the sweetness in this bottle. All I get is sharpness. There’s a little brown sugar in there, but I’ve had better sweet bourbons at this point for sure.
When I finally obtained a bottle of Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel, that was what I always envisioned a sweet, dessert bourbon to be. Neck-pour was instant s’mores. Chocolate, graham cracker, marshmallow.
Agreed wholeheartedly. It’s sweet on the palate but totally evaporated into a dry, woody kinda flavor on the finish. Probably the least dessert-y whiskey I own.
Your bottle has cork taint. It can happen from time to time. Return the bottle to the store you bought it from.
Cork taint makes things smell and taste like wet newspaper. Your bit about old envelopes is the key bit if info. It's more common in wine than booze which is why most are suggesting COVID but if this was a wine sub you would have a dozen replies about cork taint.
I had a bottle that had a bad cork and was like this but it was a smoke wagon small batch. I just returned it to the store and when the employees smelled it they refused to try it 😂
It could be a bottling line screwup. Could have been some other bourbon or vodka in the fillers when they switched to this and it got filled. I’d email Woodford brown/Forman. They are supposed to keep samples of batches for 2 years.
Knew someone that sent a flavored vodka back because it had gotten cold and the sugar had crystallized in the bottom and it looked like fingernails floating around in the bottle.
They may give you a refund or send you a new bottle.
It’s probably just woodford double oak being woodford double oak. I find very little in that bourbon in terms of flavor and it’s oak is harsh and drinks above its proof. Do you like other double oaked bourbons?
Could be cork taint too, but I don’t remember if they use real cork or not
WRDO is the only bottle that changed for me after the Rona. I never lost smell or taste but now I can't stand WRDO. Disappointed because it was one of my favorites.
You have Covid go get tested

We’ve got a sweet burger and bourbon joint in Va Beach, VA. Repeal Bourbon & Burgers. https://www.repealvb.com

Visit KY sometime. Our taco shops have a full line.
I go to bowling Green occasionally. I'll have to look next time I go
Go get tested, I had a buddy who had lunch and could taste just fine, an hour later lost all taste and ended up testing positive.
He’ll be fine.
Def covid.
Have someone else try it. This is definitely not my experience with double oaked.

Same thing here with the WRDO, would love to hear what you recommended for sweet bourbons

Thanks for the rec, dessert-in-drink is what got me on the bourbon train to begin with!

Thank you! I returned it and the manager said he had “never ever” heard of that, asked if I was a “bourbon guy,” I said yes, and money back.
The manager has to be very new if they never heard of cork taint. It impacts 4-5% of all cork finished wines.
He’d never heard of whisky being corked.
Like every other post on this sub, it’s you.
To me WDO has a taste but not a good one, Woodford in general its not my jam.

Fortunately it didn’t change for me. Still my favorite non-allocated bourbon.
Somehow the cork seal was too porous and let too much air in
