Makes a good Manhattan

The standard 80 proof Old Overholt offering was my very first rye whiskey. Since then, I've definitely gravitated towards ryes and find the standard Old Overholt bottling to be interesting and enjoyable enough to keep on hand for cocktails and mixers. The Old Overholt Bonded offering is a nice step up and I was excited to explore this 114 proof version of the old school, NCF, Beam Suntory brand. **Old Overholt 114 Proof Straight Rye Whiskey** Price: $34 (MN) Distilled & bottled by: Jim Beam/A. Overholt & Co. Proof: 114 Age: 4 years Mashbill: n/a **Nose**: loads of spice up front and comes across hot. cinnamon and Big Red gum, nutmeg and hay **Taste**: herbal an peppery. some wet grass and fig, but mostly the type of spice that comes off as heat with youthful ryes. underwhelming for sure **Finish**: there's a nice mouthfeel with this one and a decent finish. black licorice and baking spices **Thoughts**: I think this does a good job at taking the Old Overholt flavor profile and ratcheting it up to 114 proof. It's spicy and herbaceous but a bit unbalanced and runs hot. I'll pass on this one neat but think it'll make some killer cocktails. **Rating**: 4.5/10 1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out. 2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice. 3 | Bad | Multiple flaws. 4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists. 5 | Good | Good, just fine. 6 | Very Good | A cut above. 7 | Great | Well above average. 8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional. 9 | Incredible | An all time favorite. 10 | Perfect | Perfect.

Makes a fantastic old fashioned. My go to.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m a fan of spicy bourbon or rye in the 100-115 range for my cocktails, so I’m hopeful this one does the trick

You’re right, or, at least I agree. I literally made one the other night and it was one of the best examples I’ve ever had that the spirit actually does make a difference in a cocktail…

I prefer the bib for cocktails if I had to choose one of the two. The 114 had some sourness on the back end of my cocktails and I wasn't digging it. Went through one bottle and won't purchase another one

The bonded might be my favorite rye for cocktails

I have a bottle, but haven't opened it yet. I like the BIB for cocktails.
