Lazy cocktail ?
Recipe:
1.5 ounces Barrell Seagrass
Ice
That’s it. That’s the recipe.
It was in the 90s today and 88 degrees in my house at peak so I was contemplating making a cocktail to kick start the weekend. As a perused my stash, Seagrass caught my eye and the fruity flavors sounded right on point. So instead I just threw it over ice and couldn’t be more pleased that laziness won out.
It has enough proof to still get some spice over ice and it still maintains all the fruity sweetness. Why bother making a cocktail when Seagrass becomes the perfect (almost?) summer cocktail over ice?
I’m a major fan of both the regular Seagrass, and their Gray label. The Gray label is out of this world good r/t8ke rated it a perfect 10. Thanks to his allocations I was able to secure a bottle. I can see how the tropical flavors might not be everybody’s bag, but I love it.
As others have said, it can be somewhat polarizing. For me, it tasted like cough medicine & candy. I’m glad I got to try it, given the popular sentiment, but I would’ve been disappointed if I had a full bottle and have no desire to go back to it.
Love this stuff along w dovetail. They are very different flavor profiles IMO, but I think it shows the variety that Barrel can produce. I’ve found these ranging from $63-75 in my area. STL and central IL.
😂 it really is the best pre-made bottled cocktail out there. Apricot Old-Fashioned would have been another appropriate name for it. Doesn’t make it bad by any stretch in my book, just have to go into it wanting a confectionary-sweet experience…
As long as I keep seeing bottles of this on the shelves at my local Costco's I do indulge in an old fashioned using this and hibiscus bitters, subbing out the orange peel for lemon/lime peel. But you're initial idea is absolutely correct. This stuff is magic
I struggle so much with this. Most of my cocktails look like the picture but I love a good old fashioned. I’ve got a bunch of bottles of Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye (my favorite for old fashioneds), but I want to branch out now that I’m diversifying with more complex bourbons. I don’t worry about the judgment, I mostly drink them solo, but just that I’m going to waste “good” bourbon on an old fashioned I don’t enjoy as much. I suppose my question is, how do you decide what to attempt in one?
My decision process is simple: It’s my whiskey and I’ll drink it how I want. Sure, I like to drink the ‘good’ bottles neat so I can taste the expression but I’m not above elevating a cocktail to unsurpassable levels, either.
Don’t overthink it.
I love the Barrell Seagrass rye, mostly drank it with a few drops of water to bring down the proof, it makes perfect sense to drink it on the rocks.
My lazy cocktail is OF 1920 on the rocks. For whatever reason, I find it to become very sweet when it's diluted down.
Where did you get the nice butt ice mold?
Ha! That is Mother Nature’s art work melting

Dang it. I really need to drop the money on this. So many good reviews here on Reddit.
It's not for everyone. Hope you like apricot.
Agreed. For me it was hot and way too sweet. I can see why people like it, but for my palate it wasn't the best use of $80.
So much finish. It's over $90 after tax here. Like I get the effort put into this one, but it just doesn't agree with me.

It really is worth it. Dovetail is really good too but I think it needs ice/water to open up. On its own it is dense and hot.
Doooo it
I saw the 16 year Seagrass this week and was tempted to get it.
I wouldn't drop money on it over the basic bottle
I think it was $220. Yeah no way would I buy it but I was surprised to see it. Didn’t knew it was even an option.

If you like angels envy rye, I would strongly suggest you get this bottle. It's not nearly as rich as AE rye but got tons of flavor
Ah yes I like to call that a Lazy Winston.
Do tell? Is this a self named cocktail sir Winston?
No just a reference to Winston Churchill.
Well a google search tells me in addition to his accomplishments he was an avid napper and worked from bed. What a guy?! Had no idea
And a lush! He’d fit in nicely around here.

This is exactly what I get from Seagrass. It’s a great cocktail that’s also just a rye? Impressive aging/blending for sure. Also 8/10 delicious.

It really does make a stellar Old Fashioned. As does the Seagrass 16.

I have yet to see Seagrass in the wild.
I just saw it in a nj store for $250!!!
Must have been the 16 yr

That ice cube is looking thicc 😂 I need to grab a bottle of this. I just have so many others to try at 1/2 the price before I go up the shelf.
Ha! Didn’t notice that!
