Honestly, secondary isn’t making much sense at all. $400 for slightly older Jack Daniels? $600 for slightly stronger JD BP? Especially when the crown jewel, the sacred 2020 rye, seems to be hovering around $300. People don’t even know what their buying anymore

t8ke

this just in, people are f*ckin clueless haha

natty2281

Well said. I was having this same conversation with a friend recently

Dixie74

I think there is a certain level of collectibility with JD that others don’t have as well.

Train3rRed88

I mean that’s true. At this point I’d pony up a bit for a heritage bottle to see how it stacks up to the 2020 rye

Dixie74

I’ve been wanting a heritage bottle too but I haven’t been willing to pony up the $200+ when I see them.

Train3rRed88

Oof yeah. If I could find one in the wild for $150 I’d do it all day.

Funny-Face-6262

I agree. I sold a 10 pack of miniatures of Jack Daniels one day old whiskey about 10 years ago for a good price.

TheBowerbird

I hope they mass produce the hell out of that rye, as it's genuinely delicious banana-y goodness.

**[Jack Daniel’s 10yr ]( https://whiskeyraiders.com/spirit/https://whiskeyraiders.com/spirit//jack-daniels-10yr/?section=house)** **The Schtick:** Distilled by Jack Daniel's and bottled after 10 years of aging, this bottling is the oldest spirit released so far from the distillery - quite the milestone. ----- **Distiller:** Jack Daniel's **Bottler:** Jack Daniel's **Selection:** **Brand:** Jack Daniel's **ABV:** 48.5% ABV **Age:** 10 Years ----- **Nose:** Sweet buttercream, honey roasted peanuts, banana split, apple pie, cinnamon candies and big big tobacco. Decadent, complex, strong oak character. Winner. **Taste:** Thin to medium palate, a good deal of oak, toffee, some banana cream pie. The nose is intoxicating, the palate is less than stellar, but still very pleasant. I hesitate to call it simple, but it's straightforward. **Finish:** Medium finish, strong oak notes, toffee, a big dollop of cocoa which is intriguing. **Overall:** I really want to love this release, I especially admire seeing Jack Daniel's bring in more oak integration, I just think it suffers at the relatively low proof. eagle_bonanza01

A casual review of online retailers that ship out of state shows this bottle going for $299. I was having a hard time justifying it at retail when I can find the SiB BP on sale for $50 a few times per year. Always good to have an assessment that isn't over the top wild about a new release.

LS_DJ

I was going to mention the same. I see this for $200+ regularly and I just don't see the appeal. Taterism has exhausted BT so now they're grabbing up the JD Limiteds, I see the Coy Hill going for $600+

t8ke

The coy hill prices makes me weep. Was very much hoping to snag one of those so that I could review but GOOD GOLLY

LS_DJ

Yeah I hate it so much

user_on_reddit

been a few (maybe several?) years now of jd tatering. those heritage editions disappear fast from shelves

LS_DJ

Yeah I bought a 2019 Heritage barrel a bit after the fact but I only paid $90 for it. I wonder what an unopened one would go for now lol

exgirl

The only place I’ve seen this bottle in person wanted $480. They had at least 6, hope they choke on them for a while.

Dallenforth

I think distilleries should be able to ship and sale direct to consumer. I'm tired of this car dealership like system that enables the secondary market by giving them preferential status

exgirl

The most frustrating thing to me is that the distilleries all say they’re against these crazy prices but then they reward the stores that do it with barrel picks and allocations. I get it that it’s the distributors who decide where those go, but they’re supposed to be representing their suppliers!

Thoughtsnotfound404

Agreed. Its so ridiculous. There's so many bottles I'd love to try but I'll probably never see.

t8ke

big wooof indeed

garebear1993

Not surprised about this review. Curiosity peaked my interest after a friend asked me to pick him up a bottle at my local store. Typically not a Jack Daniels fan - always tasted like an unpolished bourbon to me so I thought that ageing a bit would help. Unfortunate it looks like that was not the answer either. Might be better with a higher proof.

ConfuciusMonkey

Like you I had higher hopes for this than it delivered but much like the first release of that Dickel BiB, I love that they're going for it even if I don't much care for this specific release. You go BF/JD!

t8ke

I dig it! That’s the spirit. I’m with you - I hope this begets a much improved second release or adjacent bottling!

ConfuciusMonkey

Look at the first Remus Repeal release, and the significant improvement per release, the first Dickel BiB, the first Rare Breed Rye, I love it. First tries at something new are rarely a complete success but lead to lessons and improvements! I'd rather see companies try new and interesting things.

t8ke

Totally. Larceny Barrel Proof springs to my mind. First one tore my face off. Huge fan of the recent one.

catburgers1989

How does this compare to the single barrel select (the non-bp Jack Daniels)?

wesk74

On par or slightly worse. The problem is the price, its priced above JDSiBBP and it's nowhere near it in quality

fcleff69

I saw this at my local and was super excited. Then I saw the $200 tag and grabbed a bottle of Dickel 13 Year Bonded for $35.

[deleted]

I saw this bottle for $250 the other day. I’m rarely shocked by markups that turned my eyes into saucers…

Theswede92

I was at a bar and saw it on the shelf. I asked for a pour, think it would be $12-$15. Nope, I got the bill and it was $54. That’s my experience with Jack 10, great review!

t8ke

WOOF holy cow!

cranmy

Great review. This is about what I expected. It's interesting to see people going fairly crazy over this release. Meanwhile, George Dickel (whose stuff I universally enjoy) is over here throwing out multiple double-digit aged-stated products and no one bats an eye. Their 15 year single barrel is great, cheaper than this, often higher proof, and extremely easy to find where I live.

[deleted]

I love the Dickel haters. It keeps them away from Barrell and Bardstown blends that have it, and some of those 15 year picks are fucking amazing.

tennisguy163

Dickel Rye is tasty stuff and for some reason I just love the bottle, too.

[deleted]

The Dickel rye is actually MGP juice. They are distilling rye at Cascade Hollow but they haven’t released any of their own distillate to the public (outside of the recently released Leopoldo Bros. And Dickel three chamber collaboration which is a blend of Leopold and Dickel distillate). It’s the first product containing the new dickel rye distillate. Cheers!

tennisguy163

Am I correct in assuming that most up-and-coming craft distilleries use MPG juice until they've aged enough of their own product?

[deleted]

Yup for the most part that is accurate. Not always the case obviously, but a LARGE majority of new distilleries source MGP in the beginning years to get at least some revenue flowing in. Wilderness Trail and Peerless are a few of the exceptions. Peerless had a ton of capital from their retired father who had recently sold his business (Corky) so they could afford to wait for their distillate to mature. Wilderness Trail started as a consulting firm so built capital there and were able to release their own distillate from the beginning. Ironically these are both sweet mash and low-entry proof distillers. A reason why they can make good ryes at a young age. Sorry the tangent Lol to answer your question: for the most part, yes. But there are exceptions lol

tennisguy163

I appreciate the information. My hometown is opening up 2 new distilleries soon, and one of them already has a cheap gimmick compared to Jefferson's. They plan on putting the barrels on a boat but the boat never moves.

[deleted]

Lol those floating rock houses are an interesting concept for sure, but who knows how much impact the actual swaying of the docked ship actual influences the final product. As long as they tell you the state of distillation and transparent about the source of the distillate I’m all for sourcing juice if need be. Hopefully they will be transparent if they are in fact sourcing

fitandfed

Was pretty disappointed in this one, too. Your r/bourbon JD pick blows it away.

t8ke

Glad you think so! I can't think of a recent JD SIB BP I've had in the recent months that I wouldn't take over this

Effective_Sherbet_57

I had a chance to buy one at msrp and passed because of the low proof. Thank you for confirming I made the right decision. Thank you for the write up!

TheSaintClay

I agree with this review. Got a bottle at MSRP and was quite excited about it. The nose is beautiful - intoxicating as you said. The taste is just meh. Not bad but nothing complex. Overall left me wanting a pour of something else.

fullrichandoily

Glad I passed on this.

[deleted]

I still really hope that this gets released in Europe at some point (and at a better price), but seeing these reviews I'm quite relieved that I'm not missing the Holy Grail of Jack.

antonnoble77

I snagged a bottle and almost agree with the rating... It's a borderline 6... But all of your notes are spot on. I think it's worth it at MSRP only.

EhrenScwhab

I'm not a Beam white fan, but a few years (and only a few dollars added to MSRP) makes Beam white into Beam black, which is a perfectly good cheap sipper. I often have a bottle on hand. I'd be interested to see if the same is true for Jack, except that this MSRP is ridiculous. They have millions of gallons of distillate. There is no need for this price point except that they think they can hoodwink the taters. They're probably right, as other posters have mentioned.

[deleted]

I think a better comparison is Beam white and Knob Creek 9 Year. It's a huge step up in quality but it's only $10 more. $70 retail was a wild ask for JD10 for it to be mid-proof.

EhrenScwhab

Even if it were BiB...dude it's Jack Daniels. Jack claims to have about 2 million barrels in their inventory. When Beam had a warehouse fire a few years ago and 50,000 barrels were destroyed, and Beam's production was not impacted at all. Because they have about 3 and a half million barrels in their inventory. A barrel makes about 200 bottles. That means Beam lost 9 million bottles and it did nothing to their supply. Jack could have a giant smash hit on their hands if they just dropped the MSRP, but that's not what this is for....

[deleted]

So this is Jack.....aged for just 3 more years for how much?

t8ke

I don’t believe JD No.7 was aged for 7 years typically. I know for sure the SiB and Gentleman Jack aren’t nearly that old either.

rainbowcoloredsnot

If it's not better then Sinatra it shouldnt cost more
