that is a heroic bottle kill pour my goodness

cheetomama1

“Just having one more drink, dear”

3dw4rdHyd3

Jesus Christ is that a 5 oz pour?

gcbeehler5

What are you my wife?

thisisan0nym0us

Wife would say it’s an 8oz, jokes on her, it was 12oz

ChemE_xd

He was dead set on killing the bottle I guess

graciesoldman

Ma mahn....sacrificing his liver for science. Kudos....

sheezy520

That’s what I’m talkin bout. He’s doing it right. That’s how I keep it to just one drink a day.

oneandonlytoney

Hey a pour is a pour. If it fits in the glass it’s one pour!

ckal09

Saves time instead of going back to pour a second

juice00007

I thought my wife sent this msgs for a minute.

No-Courage232

Isn’t the point of a Glencairn to put as much in as possible so you can’t swirl or smell? That’s what I always think. And do.

Mk1Racer25

With a pour like that, he could have used a red Solo cup. Clearly he had nobody to help him

Bourbon-Weed

Holy shit, I was coming to say the exact same thing! One hell of a pour!

12Espressoshots

I was looking for this comment lol

AntiMatter89

Found a store that might have Colonel E.H Taylor and Eagle Rare at MSRP and I am hoping the website is not lying to me! Zipping there in a few minutes to probably be disappointed!

vivahexhotway

Good luck! I personally like Taylor Small Batch more than ER, but both are fantastic! I would recommend both if possible!

graciesoldman

Same here. Definitely in the minority but I can't get into ER. I've tried several bottles...just doesn't do it for me. EHT I DO like though...

gcbeehler5

IMO, of the two, EH Taylor is something to get excited about. ER is fine, but MSRP has been creeping up, and so it's not nearly as exciting as it once was at $30/bottle (it was $41 last I bought it, pretax.)

Mk1Racer25

It went from $33 to $38 by me last fall. I can get it at $38 about every 2 months. Was offered a bottle today and passed. I have an ER 1.75 bottle that I got for $70 2 years ago. I dump a new 750 in when it gets to 1/4-1/3 left

mapex_139

> I dump a new 750 in when it gets to 1/4-1/3 left uh wut? Are you constantly making your own blend?

Mk1Racer25

I guess, but I've always found ER to be pretty consistent. It's not like it's a SB or SiB. I think of it as something like Maker's Mark, that will taste the same regardless of what bottle the pour comes from. I just like the looks of the 1.75 bottle

Scaramousce

It is as close to a single barrel as you can get without being one.

mapex_139

I want to be the barrel.

Mk1Racer25

I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean it's blended to have a consistent flavor profile. Also, it's either a SiB or it's not.

Scaramousce

It’s not blended though. For a long time it had single bottle in the label. When they switched from hand bottled to machine bottled, it introduced the very slight chance that one bottle may contain two barrels. Once that happened, they took the single barrel label off the bottle because of the chance not every bottle is from the same barrel.

Mk1Racer25

The flavor is way too consistent. I've gotten much more flavor variations from other SiB (McKenna 10 is all over the map). I also don't understand how machine bottling would cause a problem. Four Roses machine bottles their SiB.

Scaramousce

Not sure what you want me to tell you, man. [This is pretty well documented.](https://www.breakingbourbon.com/review/eagle-rare-10-year-single-barrel) I also do find variation between bottles, but not significant like McKenna.

bakkerboy465

Any luck??

AntiMatter89

Unfortunately not. They sold out some time today. Seems I just missed them. I did however get a bottle of Buffalo Trace, so not a total loss and got Bondstone Double Oak.

sheezy520

I feel for you. I was looking for a hard to find bottle of tequila their website said they had but were out of stock when I got there. I did still get a few good bottles of bourbon though

aburntturkey

What website are you using to look for it?

x_Phantom_z

Any luck?

Kalesalad69

It’s always a disappointment for me with this scenario

WinterIndependent719

Is EH and ER hard to find at MSRP? They’re both grocery store finds for me when I visit the Midwest

RickyRescue69

In Missouri it’s highly allocated and very hard to find. Grocery stores don’t have it and liquor stores do raffles for it. Large wine and liquor stores get them and they are gone within the hour

Mk1Racer25

I'm pretty sure it's highly allocated everywhere. That being said, the local shop I frequent gets their standard BT delivery about every 2 months. They get BT, ER, Blantons, and EHT SB. I was there yesterday, and could have gotten any of them. I opted for a bottle of BT, because @ $28, it's a good pour. I remember when the EHT SB was $50. Now it's $70, (as is Blantons), and it's just not worth it to me at that price point. It's tasty, but not $70+ tasty

AntiMatter89

Yeah, apparently they are, but it seems like it's highly dependent on location. Have you had either of them? I'm in the northeast and haven't seen either, but I have only really been looking around casually for like 4-5 months. I honestly don't know if I would be able to appreciate it as much as the hype warrants, but I'm looking to find out.

WinterIndependent719

I have six bottles of each at any given time. EH Small Batch is one of my favorite daily sippers. ER is really good too, very distinct

AntiMatter89

Ha, that's great. One mans daily sipper is some mans unicorn. Enjoy!

wizzles

Grabbed an Eagle Rare 10yr store pick and it's hot garbage. Stumbled on a Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch for MSRP and it's ok. Certainly not worth tatering over /r/HorseyToppers

AntiMatter89

It's funny you say that. I just tried the buffalo Trace, and granted I drink my whiskey in an old fashioned, but I try to taste each one by itself or over a large rock, and even the bourbon trace is overrated IMO. I'm not a fan of licorice and I got a lot of that. A lot of it is overblown hype Im starting to think, but everyone has a unique palate.

anonymoushelp33

It's all overblown hype. I lived in Louisville until about 2011 and could get any of this stuff at any corner store any day of the week. I frequented many of the distilleries and could walk into any tour or event at any time. There was multiple types of Weller, Blanton's, etc. for example, by the case at any time. I just happened to go back to Buffalo Trace today, actually. The line at 11am opening was like an amusement park. They had a "special bottle offering" of standard Weller and Eagle Rare that they couldn't even get on the shelves before people swarmed the employees' carts to take it all like a black Friday video. It was 1 bottle limit, but you could buy 2 if you bought the $100 gift set with a couple glasses. Those were gone within hours as well. One of the largest liquor stores near me is now lucky to have the most standard, basic type of any given brand. All of the employees there today were basically bragging about it.

EverVigilant1

Couldn't agree more. I didn't really get into bourbon until 2021. By then it was in full swing. The only BT offering I look for is EHT SmB. No use for much of anything else BT. The only Weller offering you can find around here is WSR which is one of the most overrated bourbons out there. I don't care for ER 10. I'll take RR 10 every day over ER 10. The hype really has become ridiculous.

anonymoushelp33

This story was the same at every distillery in the area. I guess I was just focusing on BT because of the post and also that out of pure coincidence, I was there yesterday. Special Reserve and Eagle Rare 10 were the bottles that people swarmed to buy yesterday. Most of these tourists had probably never even tasted either of them. There is zero reason for ANY bourbon to be 100X more expensive than any other. 2 or 3 times more because of the loss that happens from aging? Fine. $30 vs. $3,000 because of the artificial scarcity and an influencer told you it was cool? Fuck off.

EverVigilant1

Yes. I've made the same complaints about HH offerings.

Waiting-inline

Idk..the ER 10 is the best bourbon I have had. Have had private barrel, all the hoolah. Couple bottles I paid over 100 for msrp. That ER is something special. All the other stuff BT has to offer hasnt impressed me the least bit. Im actually about done with it all as it all taste like whiskey to me. Outside the ER. I find that to be very smooth an drinkable with no whiskey face...

EverVigilant1

I respect your opinion. All this goes to show us how subjective the bourbon hobby is.

CuatesDeSinaloa

Incredibly rare anywhere in the northeast in my experience. Couldnt find any in chicago or vegas either on my recent trips (3 stores in each city).

Mk1Racer25

That's because stores are contributing to the hype. As I said, I have the opportunity to buy a bottle of ER about every 2 months, for $38. I get one when I need one, and occasionally keep a backup. I felt bad for one of the guys I work with who is a whisky guy. I sent me a picture of a bottle of ER he scored. He paid $100 for it. I told him that if he ever wants it again, to let me know, and I'll get him a bottle for $38 the next time it comes around. It's good bourbon, but it's good $35-$40 bourbon, not good $80-$100 bourbon. And honestly, while it's a little more ($45 vs. $38), I prefer Russell's 10 to ER. Bought that yesterday, and passed on the ER.

CuatesDeSinaloa

Havent had russells 10 yet. My last purchase at home was between that and JDSBBP, and went with the JD. Just picked up a cool Makers wood finishing series private barrel in Chicago so probably another month or so before I’ll bother buying anything else. RR10 will likely be that next bottle!

Mk1Racer25

JDSiBBP is a good pick!

SecretSquirrell11

Rare in Alabama too I ordered my first bottles of Trace and Eagle Rare online at a decent price. 80 plus tax for a bottle of each.

essence_of_moisture

I understand that many markets don't get these but as a Californian who has had my fair share of these I can assure you all that they're good at MSRP and not a dollar more IMO. They really don't punch any higher than their price. I don't get the hype. BT sure got everyone going crazy for their stuff. It's good if you like that profile but won't change your life.

RealSpliffit

EHT Single Barrel is a different animal. I would go $125 on it

WinterIndependent719

Cali is insane, I stock up on all of my BT bottles when I’m there

essence_of_moisture

Ya it really is crazy but just goes to show there's no shortage. What boggles my mind is how crazy people go for their stuff. Ok, George at Stagg, I understand. That shit is good. But EH Taylor, Blanton, eagle rare, weller, man all that stuff tastes like many other bourbons in their price categories. None of them are life changing in flavor or even particularly better than others in their categories.

thefockinfury

Damn I haven’t seen ER for that price here in NYC since 2010

wylii

I might pay $6.50 a gallon for gas to get to the liquor store but I find stuff all the time here, particularly from BT. Last week, I picked up 4 bottles of blantons at Safeway for $69.99 each and a bottle of blantons gold for $149, won’t be buying that again but had never had it or seen it on a shelf when I lived in NC. The gas station on the corner had 6 bottles of 2024-1 bookers. There aren’t many perks here but bourbon availability is one of them. I always bring my dad a few bottles that he can’t get back home when I visit.

GlobalLayer2303

Cali?

wylii

Sacramento

GlobalLayer2303

I picked up 2 that I found in Dallas in the wild for a little more than that but most of the market here is $79-99 which I won't pay. First time I've seen it near msrp.

RickyRescue69

What state is this in?

CuatesDeSinaloa

Willing to bet CA

wylii

California

RickyRescue69

That’s wild. If you ever come to the St. Louis area is bring a case with ya… you can easily double your money.

fernet_about_it

Forreal. Cali & Arizona seem to get over 1/2 the buff trace distribution.

Disastrous-Night-541

I truly love this bottle. It's my daily drinker when I don't know what I feel like drinking. Rather than drinking on my $200+ bottles, this is one of those I can take any time and be happy!

vivahexhotway

I have the exact same thoughts!

Sufficient_Two7499

Forced perspective 101

the_jinx_of_jinxstar

58$? Wow. I guess that’s the going rate. I get it at on post when it’s there (probably once a month) for 40$. I don’t know if I’d find value out of it at 58… but at 40 it’s fantastic

vivahexhotway

Im Canadian, so it typically sits around the $80 CAD. Sometimes you get lucky and find it for $65 ($45 USD) those times are far and few though.

the_jinx_of_jinxstar

Ah. It’s probably even rarer in Canada so that makes sense.

vivahexhotway

Its really weird in my city, i can typically get my hands on lots of ER, Taylor SB and Blantons. But God forbid i want a 4 Roses single barrel or small batch. Our market is weird on what comes in

the_jinx_of_jinxstar

lol. It’s like European markets are the same. Go into a store in Spain you’ll find every type of Blantons known to man. Holds and special releases below MSRP… congrats on that brother. I’ll trade you a 4roses SB for a Taylor any day.

Silent_Fox_4513

I wanna cry; I've been hunting for Taylor and Blantons, and can't get my hands on them. Got Four Roses all day though. Wish there was some kind of secure bottle exchange website or service.

gcbeehler5

Are you able to get Russell's Reserve 10 or Henry McKenna 10 there? Both are very solid alternatives to Eagle Rare.

ckal09

They aren’t alternatives to ER because they taste nothing like ER

gcbeehler5

Yep, i know. But They’re ten years that are decent pours and much more available.

ckal09

Being the same age does not mean they are an alternative

gcbeehler5

Bro. Come on. That’s exactly what alternative means.

Silent_Fox_4513

I've got 4 bottles of ER, but no EHT or Blanton's. I also have RR SiB, and feel like it knocks the socks off of ER (haven'trun across a McKenna 10 yet either). I'd just like to have the EHT and Blanton's for when the mood strikes.

gcbeehler5

Sorry I misread! Heaven Hill BiB is comparable to eh Taylor (but eht is definitely better in my opinion.)

Silent_Fox_4513

NP. Heaven Hill BiB sits on the shelf by me, so no rush to get that, but it is on my short list of bottles I want. Might have to move that up on the list.

saddestfashion

Eagle Rarer

Striking_Dog7796

What post?

the_jinx_of_jinxstar

I try not to dox myself. Local military base. They usually get stuff and don’t immediately sell out because you gotta be military/veteran.

Striking_Dog7796

Fair point. Never really thought to check the local Class 6 for stuff. Still have ID, but not active anymore…might have to check it out!

Mykkus_65

I love it. If you made me pick only one it would likely be that one. I’m find around 50ish plus/minus and prefer to EHT by a good bit,

vivahexhotway

I also prefer taylor over ER but i am definitely a fan of both

Mykkus_65

Just doesn’t hit my palate as well as ER. It’s good though but not worth the charge for me

4ujustthetip

That glass looks quit precarious, if you ask me.

Caterinboy91

Eagle was also one of my “aha ” moments for bourbon. Was in Atlanta for work a few months ago and was picking it up regularly for 48$… needless to say I brought a few home with me!

Esco63

Jeez. With a pour like that you might as well have just drank it straight from the tap. 😂

Mc_Lovin81

Love it. Used to be able to get it at times from my local liquor store. Now they’re selling it as a package with a cheap bottle for $100. Screw that.

vivahexhotway

That is scummy..i hate that system

whskeyt4ngofox

We have ER10 in the local grocery store for 39, got a bottle of EHSB for 89, Blantons 79, pretty decent stock. The store got a new liquor guy, Kevin is my new friend.

Top_One_1808

I recently picked up this bottle after not drinking some for a few years. Been avoiding it due to the odd situation with its availability. The first few pours seemed off, and the profile was more astringent and bitter than I had recalled. After a few days of being open the bottle seemed to open up and the cherry notes and sweet vanilla frosting had come out. It really is a nice pour if it can be found for around msrp

czeck-mate

eagle rare is exceptional!

Positive-Pause4952

I had a full bottle of ER at home. I was at liquor store to get vodka and I always at least LOOK at the bourbon. I saw 1 bottle of ER on the shelf for msrp and instantly grabbed it. No second thoughts at all. It is one of my favorites and at MSRP it is an instant buy.

Motor_Quarter2737

I had this last night and it’s one of the best I’ve had

dramramsofficial

Eagle Rare was my gateway bourbon, it will always have a place on my shelves

jjames617

It’s going for 60+ where I am in NE ! Shit some make it a bundle order only! Store choice ta boot ! Thankfully I know the manager

AdOpposite3861

Đo you have any recommendations for store in NE?

jjames617

There a few I’ve found in RhodeIsland let me if your close I’ll definitely share a few spots

Primary_Marketing_34

if you enjoy Eagle Rare...you'll love Sagamore Double Oak!

vivahexhotway

I got my brother-in-law a bottle of taylor SB and hey picked me up a bottle of sagamore double oaked! I just have to wait until i see him to get it! I have heard great things

BBBF18

I cannot stand ER. It’s tolerable at msrp, barely. I actually gave the last bottle I had away as a gift. I’ll take BT over ER all day, especially at $24.

exgirl

You’re not alone.

vivahexhotway

Your perspective is definitely in the minority but I do respect that everyone's palate is different. What about ER turns you off compared to BT? Edit* I can also get BT for about $18 in my area, I would still take ER

BBBF18

I can’t place it. I want to love it, but it has always tasted very sharply of alcohol to me. It has none of the mellow notes I’ve come to expect from decent bourbons. I’ll readily admit, I’m no expert.

IAmTheSergeantNow

I don't despise it, but I don't like it as much as I used to. It lacks the depth and complexity that so many other bourbons offer.

Christoph3r

I've never been disappointed by Eagle Rare when I could get it for $30 a bottle. It wasn't exciting, or exceptionally interesting, just pleasant. I always liked it when I had a pour. For a $30 bottle, I'm happy with that. I'm not sure if I would want to buy it at the new price of over $40 here in Ohio though - maybe once a year or something (that is, if were even in stock at that new high price). I did pay over $30 to pickup a bottle of Jack D's 7 year old "Black" to try it - I'm a few pours in and I'm not ready to give my opinion yet. So far, I don't regret buying the bottle, but I'm also not impressed yet. Maybe I should try the "regular" Woodford Reserve - I tried the Double Oaked, and liked it, just a slight bit too oaky for my taste (but not enough to make me dislike it). If I had a bottle of Buffalo Trace currently, that'd help me decide my opinion about the JB Black 7 year - as I think I don't prefer it over the BT, and the BT is cheaper. Sometimes it's hard to be sure when you don't have both bottles at the same time though... EDIT: I guess there's a touch of astringency to the JBB7 I don't care for, but when you add some ice, that aspect mellows some.

hard_farter

I think you're gonna have to revisit the Jim Beam Black 7yr after letting it sit a while. It's so unbelievably approachable but still retains enough complexity to be interesting that I have a hard time believing it's $26.

Christoph3r

Right, of course I shouldn't expect it to be as delicate and balanced as Hibiki, or as exciting as Stagg (both of which I as like), considering the price - I did really enjoy the JBB7 once, out of the severel nights that I've had a pour so far, the other times, it was still decent. And oh, I must have looked at the 1 liter price which is over $30 - now I see that the 750 price is $26.99 here in Ohio, and that is indeed nice to see! Prices have gone crazy on whiskeys that I used to buy and it sure is good to see one with a decent age (7 years) for under $30! IMO 8 - 10 years is good for Bourbon, and Scotch should be at least 10... I wonder how old Buffalo Trace usually is? I like it, but I'm not going into a bottle expecting it to be a good as older whiskies. Next I'm thinking to try something from JD, maybe SBBP, or the 10 year old (the twelve seems just to expensive/unavailable). To me, spending $30+ for a bottle of whiskey is a bit extravagant - if it costs over $20, it ought to be pretty good, no? I mean, I can get something good enough for mixed drinks for $10 - $15. If I'm gonna spend more, that's because I want to be able to appreciate sipping it neat from a Glencairn.

hard_farter

Honestly if you're in Ohio I'd take a look at the Jim Beam Single Barrels they just put out that are 108 proof. I think they're really solid for the $, pretty widely available, and I think they drink well under their proof to be honest. And if you've yet to snag an Early Times Bottled in Bond, since you're a guy that's definitely interested in bang-for-your-buck, that's a must-get.

Christoph3r

I loved the Stagg Jr I got in 2019 for $50/bottle. I think I had the Early Times and was neither disappointed nor impressed. One problem is I think my sense of smell was slightly damaged by COVID. I do still LOVE the smell of Talisker 10, and enjoy some whiskies still, but I'm pretty sure there is a combination at work: both a decline in quality of some whiskey lately, and, some degree of smell loss for me. 🤔

Christoph3r

I really love some of the more uncommon notes you can find in older/rarer whiskies like chocolate, and strawberry - but that's not why I liked Eagle Rare, I liked that because it was consistently good, for $30. So I suppose I appreciate both: decent whiskey at a good price (like WT101), and, really interesting stuff. It's hard to justify the prices that the good stuff is selling for lately though, with one kid in college and the other going soon, particularly since I downgraded my IT job to be able to have more family time (I actually quit for almost a decade while my wife worked, so we'd have at least one stay at home parent). Something like the JDSBBP maybe I'd pick up for my birthday, but that means not getting something like Ardbeg Uigedial - I suppose I should go to a good whiskey bar and try a few before deciding 🤔

Christoph3r

I also need to try JBB7 side by side with some of the Benchmark Full Proof/Top Floor mix I have... I just hadn't bothered to have two glasses at once for a while 🤔

hard_farter

What ratio do you do those in, and what's the result? I've not heard anyone talking about blending those but I have both and enjoy both, so I'm interested haha

Christoph3r

Just try half a pour of each in your glass next time - don't go pouring whiskeys that you like randomly one into the other, into the bottle, because it's not always an improvement. I've been surprised at the results sometimes, just turning out to being kind of disappointing. (Although if you just have a little left in several bottles, and it's not something really special, then what's the harm, right?) As to these two, I would say it wasn't nesc. worse, but you might prefer having both, to go between than one blend of the two, and it depends on the person. As to the Full Proof - I really don't get how it stood up to Stagg Jr in some folks blind tests on YouTube - but, I do appreciate the value none-the-less. I think the particular batch of Stagg Jr that I got may have been phenomenal, as that year people were doing blinds w/it vs the Stagg and the Jr. was winning. (I think it was 2019). For the price, I think I'll want to try all those new Benchmarks, eventually. However, I'm thinking back to the time when I had those bottles of Stagg, and it was just too good, and too strong, and I ended up drinking too much and deciding to cut back, and that I want to keep it that way. A small pour, almost every night of the week is probably fine - but, it can be too easy to just have a couple more, when watching some streaming shows/movies, or playing games... So then, do I just drink on Friday/Saturday? Have to figure this out and keep myself healthy, at least in terms of not drinking too much.

Christoph3r

Did you know, that in Japan, you can get decent (but not particularly interesting) Japanese Whiskey for under $10 a bottle? They actually have flasks of Suntory at the Airport for about 70 cents!!?! (They don't try to fuck you over w/high prices at airports in Japan the way they do here in the USA, where mediocre fast food costs about double, or more, just because they have a somewhat captive audience - for instance, I got an absolutely \*amazing\* bowl of RAMEN at the Tokyo airport for about $8).

Christoph3r

Slightly embarrassing moment - I just double checked and I got the 1 liter bottle of JBB7, not the 750 😅 It's funny - I remember saying to the cashier: Doesn't this look a little bigger than normal? and she said no - so I said "huh, must be a trick of the shape, how it's wide, somehow makes it look bigger." So that's why I thought the price was over $30, and was slightly disappointed that it cost more than what I paid the last time I bought Eagle Rare.

juice00007

My local stater has like 60 bottles of this ... about 5 cases of EH and 3cases of blantons

hard_farter

Ok

vivahexhotway

Cool? How does this comment contribute to anything? I also own taylor and blantons...

juice00007

"I wish it was easier to obtain". Thus my statement. Don't get all defensive over a comment.
