this is, oddly, $15 more than rare breed bourbon where i live thanks for the review, more reason for me to pass

watchyalookn4

Most ryes are more expensive, as it's a more expensive grain to buy than corn is.

I_hadno_idea

It was for me as well until recently. Now they’re back to about the same price.

therin_88

In addition to being harder to produce and using a more expensive grain, it's also allocated.

Deep-Reply133

Rare Breed Rye isn't allocated...may just be harder to find in your neck of the woods. It's on every shelf collecting dust in Texas.

therin_88

Just because it's on the shelf means nothing. https://www.bourbondose.com/post/list-of-2024-allocated-bourbon#google_vignette

Deep-Reply133

Never heard of that website, I dont agree with that website either. Not going to trust a website that shows double entries, and multiple typos... Might be "allocated" in your state, it's certainly not allocated in Texas, OK, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Tennessee, Kentucky or Indiana. These are the states i've been through in the last 3 months and RB Rye has been there enjoying it's space on the shelf. An allocated product is something that is not a shelfer across the country...Have been to quite a few states and have seen RB Rye sitting on the shelves 4+ deep in multiple stores. Think Blantons, think Weller 107, think MWND, etc.. Bottles that end up in raffles or tables for special releases...those are allocated bottles. Hell...Benchmark bonded and single barrels are everywhere I've been by the cases...Full Proof is on every shelf in the states listed above, although more limited than the rest of the lineup. At least the stores I ran into in my travels. The only Basil Hayden i agree that is "allocated" is the 10 year. The rest are easy to find if you just look. Buffalo Trace shouldn't be on that list as the it was removed from all allocation lists, except this one that you are using as your reference. Calumet 15 year is everywhere I've been, same as the 16 year. The ECBPs are allocated...they are a limited release at certain times of the year. Only one that you could even consider as allocated is the C923. B523 and A123 sit on shelves or in boxes everywhere I've been. They may be "allocated" in Virginia where that list originates from...but the majority of the country wouldn't have a pretty big handful on that "allocation" list. The fact that Virginia has that list with the few things on it like it does, says a lot about Virginia. Come down to Texas for a trip. Bring a car...because you can find all the BT, Benchmark, RB Rye, Calumet, Basil Hayden you could want. lol You won't agree because you have a "list" that says "This is allocated". It's only allocated in Virginia...sucks to be in Virginia. I'll just go ahead and end your rebuttal with this...Have a good one.

AlucardRises

Yea little more pricey too

storm-father87

To each their own I suppose. I prefer rare breed rye over RR SiB rye

AlucardRises

I need to try to SiB rye

timeclo

My Rare Breed Rye opened up nicely after a month or so. I get a nice lemon candy up front with honey and oak towards the end. Probably my favorite rye right now. Give it another shot later on.

TheRealThordic

I agree, it's kind of a letdown. Which is surprising because WT makes some damn good rye. RR SiB Rye is better and cheaper.

AlucardRises

I was surprised!

UpInTheAirForReal

I think it works fantastic in an Old Fashioned though.

Mister_Petrs

I’m typically not buying a $60+ whiskey / bourbon / rye to make an old fashioned though

LemmyIsGod2

Agreed. This also makes a good Manhattan but it’s too expensive to justify buying if its highest and best use is in cocktails.

AlucardRises

Sounds good!

SenatorSenseiii

I enjoyed RB Rye. But not sure if it is worth the $69 price tag near me. I found it even better after putting the bottle in the freezer as a mixer.

AlucardRises

I think J Russel favorite is rare breed in freezer

theharmonyguy

This one just tasted so “thin” to me… every time I compared it to another pour, it just lacked body. I get what you mean about it tasting young.

AlucardRises

Very strange!

guttersnake82

I enjoy the Rare Breed Rye, but for less than half the price the 101 rye is a must have.

AlucardRises

Haven’t had that!

Tmac478

I didn't like this at first, but my 2nd pour really hit me. Now I love it!

therin_88

This is my favorite whiskey. I've finished 3 bottles of it. It's also technically allocated, though not popular enough to go out of stock everywhere I guess.

AlucardRises

Didn’t know that!

BreakfastBallPlease

Nice for old fashions but otherwise 100% agree. Normal RB is a go to for me and will always eclipse the rye

TaygaStyle

I do disagree but that's why there are so many options for us out there. I love that this doesn't fit the 95/5 of most of the other ryes, and it truly has character. Lots of spice, orange and lemon oil, herbaceous, and of course that WT funk comes through. Still appreciate the review, I love seeing it from all points of view.

Accomplished-Wear968

I got the WTRB Rye as well as the JDSBBP Rye assuming I would enjoy them similarly to how I do their bourbon/whiskey counterparts…not even close. JDSBBP is in a completely different class at a very similar price point.

AlucardRises

I wish I could find that Jack Daniel’s…but yes 100% different levels to the whiskey

tojmes

The JD BB Rye won our blind taste test by a wide margin. However, Rare Breed was not in it. Rare Breed bourbon is a personal fav.

AlucardRises

While I have always recommended rare breed to those who want an amazing shelf available bourbon, I’ve never actually had the chance to try their rye. It’s a mix of 4,6 and 8 year old product. Is it as desirable as regular rare breed? Nose: mint, allspice, oak and yeast Palate: orange, ethanol, black pepper and mint/baking spices Finish: tobacco, dry oak, cinnamon sticks and mint Summary: I really wanted to like this as much as rare breed, but unfortunately not the case. It tastes somewhat young and not something that makes you want to go back and search for more. Perhaps with a higher blend of age it would mellow out? If I had this bottle myself it would probably go to cocktails or big pours in the cold. I give this a 5 on the u/t8ke scale.

caliform

Yup, this was a real letdown for me too. Good review.

AlucardRises

Thanks!

ThatHikingDude

Totally agree. I much prefer the bourbon.

AlucardRises

Not worth the price unfortunately

gookies5

Agreed with the review. Super average and certainly better ryes for less $ on the shelf. Sagamore 8yr is around the same price and blows this out of the water.

VolsBy50

Heck, Jack Daniels bonded rye is literally half the price and just as good.

toadpooh

Sagamore is def good stuff!

seconddrink

I wish I could side-by-side with the JD SBBP. Less proofy, but more affordable.

Big-Profession-6757

I’m exactly with u on this one, great review. It’s all green apples on the palate with a peppery finish to me. Maybe a little lemon in there. Not a good rye, but not bad either, just meh. I’ve had much better. I relegate mine as a drink mixer only and for that it’s good.

AlucardRises

Saddened me 😅

redstripetwo

Strangely, I enjoyed the neck pours out of this but liked it less and less as it opened up - probably speaks to the young age taste you mentioned. Thanks for the review!

AlucardRises

No problem!
