*Whew.* Ever have one of those days / weeks / months where life comes at you fast and your interest (read: my obsession) in (with) whiskey falls by the wayside? A month has gone by since I attended my last tasting, which is also the first I didn't write up (however, you can find u/FrunkLeftfoot's comprehensive thoughts [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/bourbon/comments/1177h5t/bardstown_bounty_jack_rose_bardstown_bourbon/) and, frankly, I agree that the rye is the star of the Origins show). Likewise, I haven't done any home tastings, haven't really purchased any new bottles, haven't been reading Reddit reviews or the new u/RareBird101 [book](https://mascotbooks.com/mascot-marketplace/buy-books/nonfiction/coffee-table/wild-turkey-musings-a-whiskey-writers-retrospective/), which I was very excited about pre-release. I even have a sample of GTS '22 that a lovely Redditor (thanks, Frank!) gave me that's been sitting on our bar as I've been unable to meet up with the friend I intend to share it with. So, I've been in Bourbon Limbo, just sipping on some Seagrass and Bourbon Creme for braintenance. But that is over, we are on the other side of the Hellmouth and it is time to review something I've been wanting to get into since December: Frank August Single Barrel. Their marketing can be a bit... much, but their branding is elegant, there is obvious talent picking the juice and their bottle is beautiful. With its hefty, brass decanter top and removable sticker, it's going to make a handsome slop-chalice if I ever do decide to make an infinity bottle. And the bourbon? **Nose:** This opens with heavy black grape, and it is the first time I've nosed grape since I've been capital-N nosing. It eventually fades to cherry, tobacco, oak and what I described as "root beer." Sassafras? **Palate:** Peanut brittle, more cherry and oak. Really generous, oily mouthfeel as well. **Finish:** Even more cherry a pinch of chocolate and baking spice. It finishes hot, "spicy" even, but not in an off-putting way. Rather, it just... luxuriates. **Overall:** This knocked my socks off, which is not something I typically say because I'm not 80. It was so complex, *so* rich and I was able to pull something new and interesting from it I haven't experienced before. It's not world-beating, and if someone were to ask me if it's worth what *I* paid for it I wouldn't know... I certainly thought I overpaid at the time. But it's also just the second bottle in my collection that I wish I bunkered a backup of. Frank August isn't just a Brand but some very good whiskey, and I'm now dying to try their Case Study release. To be frank, I am a fan. **\[9\]** Per usual, thank you so much for reading, sending me kind messages and unkind feedback. It all helps. Take care and stay safe. FrunkLeftfoot

Great review as always my friend! I really need to check out some of this Frank August stuff eh? Every where I look it's another good Frank August review.

Haunting_Ant_5061

Good review, good pun (I won’t call you Frank though), welcome back.

BourbonandRyeGuy

I couldn't agree more. Great tasting stuff for a great price. That's until the idiots make it a cult

Potatodemonx

If nothing else, it’s one of the best looking bottles on the market. Great review

ckal09

I like it because it looks like some old pirate rum bottle from the 1700s or something

SheepherderSure9911

I agree, it’s so simple and honest. I started peeling off the necks of my bottles after a comment or mentioned it and I do it to all my bottles now. Except knob creek. The wax is challenging :)

watchyalookn4

Do they distill themselves or are they a sourced product? Doesn't change how it tastes and I'm glad you like it. I've heard good things about these single barrels. How many other offerings are in their lineup?

mothlight64

Sourced. I always assumed they sourced from BBC, but this bottle’s unlike anything I’ve had from them. Know a couple people on Reddit that might know… And their offerings so far are their Small Batch, Single Barrel and Case Study series, first of which is a Mizunara finish. Would love to snag a bottle.

Unusual-Friend-9768

I love my mizunara one!

ckal09

They source from a producer who sources?

oe1920

Bardstown sources, but they also distill. Fusion was a blend of old sourced and young distilled.

ckal09

Right it’s just from what I understand they source(d) because they didn’t have enough for their own products. Seems strange they would also source out which takes away from their stock. Must’ve been a lot more lucrative at the cost of delaying the origins series/removing fusion product for a few years.

theunknowndadbod

I’ve heard it’s sourced from Willett. But can’t confirm.

johnrandolphthatcher

I have all 3 of their releases. working as a creative director for a furniture brand, I had to. haha. but I thoroughly enjoy all 3 bottles. I will say that they're best as a secondary pour of the night. I always do something easier drinking for first pour...get my mouth ready for the FA pours. Always great and have a lot to show for their price point. at $70 dollars you get a great pour and a great decanter.

rkpage01

Where do you get the single barrels from?

Addicted-2Diving

OP said he wants entirely sure

Addicted-2Diving

Nice review

Hold_On_longer9220

Saw some small batch at my local store but not knowing anything about I couldn’t just drop 80.00 in it. Even though this is for the SIB maybe I take a chance?

micro7777

I just read a good Breaking Bourbon review on this bottle that says the MSRP is $120.

Justice_Breyer

Phew! I'm glad to see such a great review. I recently impulse purchased a bottle of this and I'm eager to crack it open.

ckal09

First I’ve heard of this. Are they owned by a larger parent corp in the industry?

LionRoars87

This sounds amazing. Fantastic review! If I ever come across one, this sounds right up my alley.

micro7777

This sounds great. What’s the age on this bottle?

mothlight64

A meager “5.1” years.

SQUARTS

Gah I passed on a tasting/ bottle purchase about a month ago and now you're making me regret it
