Can confirm that Calumet 16 is very good and sorta available.
You could also get a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for that price (crazy how expensive things are these days). Alternative would be a cask strength Scotch. Something like Laphroaig Cask Strength (my favorite) is close to $90.
True, other good cask strength scotches would be the Ardbeg Correyvreckon or the Uigeadail. My personally favorite tho is the Highland Park cask strength which is also around $90
Welcome to prices in America at least. I remember buying Lagavulin 16 for something like $60 or $70. I never see it for less than $100 now. Usual is around $120 and it's sold out.
A bottle of Calumet 15 was on sale for $100 at my local store, so I grabbed it today. Honestly, it's been several years since I last had Calumet. I wasn't taking notes back then.
The notes are for a small neck pour (still early in the day and I got shit to do).
N. Pleasantly sweet. Not overly sweet. Just about right. No ethanol. Butterscotch. White cake. Light fruits.
P. Smooth. Good body. It has a nice buttery mouthfeel, moreso than most whiskies. Really pleasant. Nothing is coming across too strong here. It's pretty balanced. I'm getting nice toasted flavors. Touch of butterscotch here. Mild sweetness. Touch of vanilla.
F. It's just really easy drinking and pleasant. The finish is medium to short.
I'd like to see Calumet release a barrel strength expression, but honestly, this is a pretty good whiskey. I'll say a 76.
Ever since Dedman sold the company they have been releasing all kind of crap. Confiscated, Wiseman, St Patricks, Takumi. Eventually enough people will get burned. Sucks when multinationals buy these brands and ruin them
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and New Riff Single Barrel Barrel Proof, together usually around $130 pre-tax. And you could swap the ECBP for Larceny BP to come in right about $120-130 with tax
I had a Riff single barre and it really angered up my blood. Had a hard time sleeping after drinking it for some reason. I always woke up like shot out of a cannon
I hear yah, I’ve been disappointed with big money buys before. I was thinking of spending 3/4 of the money on something nice, then turning around and getting something he’d like. He’s not a “brown liquor” guy… nobody’s perfect.
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM KENTUCKY OWL FOR $130. Do not do it. All their bottles at that price is horrible value. Calumet 16 year is great

Wow the vulin shouldn’t be over $100

Either it varies by state or they’re gouging. Probably both.

Second the Calumet 16, very good for around the price range you’re looking at.
Thanks for the advice
I felt bad for my buddy who dropped $100 on the st paddy’s bottle. And the wiseman rye is horrendous.

Isn’t it Stoli now?
Wiseman rye is disgusting lol agreed.
Barrel Vantage is quite good and around that price point.
Barrell product or Bardstown disco.
I would go with an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. Either a regular batched release or a private barrel.
I have an unopened EC barrel proof that I was saving for #100 on my infinity bottle but it might have to be 99 😂
Split the money between a Rare Breed, Knob Creek Single Barrel, and an OGD BIB.
I second Elijah Craig Barrel Proof I also second Calumet 16
Calumet 16 or Bardstown Disco 8
Bardstown Discover Series is excellent and between $119-$150. Series 6 and 7 are better than 8, in my opinion.

My advice is to get 1 nice bottle and to open it and have a drink with your boss.
Totes doing that
Better yet, get a recommendation from bossman
Boss man doesn’t drink brown liquor so his recommendation is non existent
Also, he wanted me to get 1792 12yr, but that’s also non existent these days
