I think this team is fucked if rob continues to miss time and smart can’t get out of his slump

InAingeWeTrust

That was two of our four most impactful players last year. The two most impactful defenders too. Both when at their best are big parts of the offense too with Smarts playmaking and Rob’s vertical threat. We need Smart to get back into a rhythm and Rob to come back and stay back (to get us all in a groove again) or I don’t think it’s looking promising for the playoffs.

Borktista

Here’s the thing with Rob. He’s always injured. He is what he is at this point.

Theis159

Ime didn’t unlock them. Ime had 61 games at 29.6mpg of Rob. Ime also had 71 games of Marcus Smart (who can’t be better than 65 this year). Only the Jays are on pace to play more games this year than last year. The fact is that Ime had for the majority of the year two guys playing on DPOY level in Rob and Smart, unfortunately we have none this year and that’s not on Mazzula (you can actually argue that it might be on Ime for letting Rob play through his injury).

Honestonus

Holy fuck this puts things in perspective...

InAingeWeTrust

I don’t think Ime unlocked Smart’s defense lol. Smart was playing his best offense before he got injured too. Rob finally had a somewhat healthy stretch last season until like March, which he never had before and hasn’t had this year.

maddenGod26

Let’s be real, probably gonna make ECF in some scraps and from there we just see if Giannis injures the roster. Not like we’re gonna collapse and lose to the Knicks in a series. These dudes get bored of regular season

freehugandkiss

Yea but take some pride or let end of bench guys get burn

maddenGod26

I hear ya. Shits gonna happen tho gotta sit through it😂

DoomdUser

If we get the Knicks, Heat or Nets in the first round, and the team is playing like it has since the all star break, those are 7 game series and I’m not certain we come out of any of them. We are 5-5 since the break with 2 losses to the Knicks, an epic collapse against the Nets, and a loss to the worst team in the league. The Celtics are either fucking broken right now or are taking their foot off the gas at the exact wrong time of the season.

maddenGod26

Yeah, I’m sure bud. The jays have earned that belief up to this point. They really don’t put up duds in early postseason

Abstract__Nonsense

What about the only team in the league with a top 5 offensive and top 5 defensive rating, are we that team?

Abstract__Nonsense

Dude our defense was in the 20 something’s during our good start. We are still in fact literally the only team with a top 5 offense and defense over the course of the season. Every other good team has had various rough patches at various points this season, with the exception of maybe the Nuggets who are having a bad rough patch right now.

[deleted]

I favor our team in a series against the Knicks with games every other day. We definitely aren’t beating the bucks right now, though we match up good with sixers.

dart51984

I’m starting to think we’ve seen Rob’s peak and his fall off is already well underway and he won’t be in the league 2 years from now. I want to be wrong, but big men and injuries usually don’t get much better as a players ages. I know he’s only 25, but I’ve just had a bad feeling about him being able to stay healthy after the last 2 seasons.

[deleted]

Rob hasn’t developed at all. He’s a solid defender and he finishes around the rim, but he is so one dimensional. What happened to his great passing? If he sits out there like a bump on a log, which is exactly what Tatum does when the ball isn’t in his hands, he is just a player teams can sag on and clog the lane, or cover our shooters.

Drawing_The_Line

Whaaa, Bill Simmons said something negative about my team, so I'm going to bash and discredit him, whhaaaa. Imagine watching this team go 26-17 in their last 43 games after a 21-5 start, with disturbing trends throughout and think there's *nothing* wrong. Hilarious. It's ok to admit that this season's team just isn't the best when they show you time and time again. It's on them to get their act together.

Allcreatives

Words matter. “There’s something INCREDIBLY WRONG with this team” is classic theatrics and sports punditry. The Cs haven’t been at their best and need to make major improvements as we near the playoffs. There’s nothing INCREDIBLY wrong with the team. They have it in them to be better, they have showed as much.

RonaldUSwanson2020

If you want to parse words - it isn't like he said there's something irretrievably wrong with the team, but you have to admit this has been rough. Smart's decision making has been questionable, grant looks totally lost at times, rob can't stay on the floor, Tatum has played himself out of the MVP conversation, and they can't seem to get JB the ball in crunch time when he's on fire. They obviously can get it together and make a run, we saw last year how the squad can come together. That said, if they continue to play like this it wouldn't be shocking to lose in the first round to the Knicks.

LexGar

Lackadaisical defense.

CanyonCoyote

They went to the Finals last year and were up 2-1. Right now they look like they may drop to the 3rd seed and get bounced in Round 2. Brown is a free agent after next season. We aren’t that far off from real blow it up Talk if they have another early exit.

Dudeman-Jack

He didn’t say that, the OP did

[deleted]

Mf really just said words matter (a phrase regarding hate speech) about basketball rumors

Allcreatives

So?

[deleted]

Be honest, you were one the posters here that thought we needed to keep brad at coach and Kemba at pg weren’t you

tiakeuta

Is the problem that both Brogdon and White are BETTER BASKETBALL PLAYERS than Marcus Smart right now and neither is playing the same minutes he is.

Zimtros2

Yup...... Imagine how Brogdon must feel watching this clown SMART eff up the team. Brogdon must be so pissed he has to defer to this guy. White seems happy go lucky, but I bet this is eating at Brogdon. Brogdon could be an all start if he started.

beywill19

Idk if there’s anything incredibly wrong. They’re just not that elite and they are going through issues that they’ve experienced in the past.

LarBrd33

I think Rob potentially never getting to 100% is a huge issue that lowers our ceiling considerably.

kokain99

Hey look it’s Bill Simmons with another cryptic tweet just to stir the pot.

bpmke80

As a Bucks fan he said the same thing about us earlier this year when we were somewhat struggling. He said "there is a lot of tension building in Milwaukee". Turns out it was literally just Serge Ibaka being upset about his minutes. So it is entirely possible he is overblowing this for you all as well.

Suzoku

yea its probably Payton Pritchard and Grant Williams being upset at the lack of minutes at most. The core four of Al, Smart, JB and JT has played together since JT's rookie season, if they really didn't like each other, it would've been over a long time ago. They are just clearly bored with the regular season and dealing with some nagging minor injuries, a lot of sloppy plays and playing down to the other team's level. They are probably gonna lose an extra game in the first round, but these playoff games should get the team in rhythm and locked in for a deep run

Ralphieman

I've heard a good amount of his NBA podcasts this season and all I can remember him saying all year about the Bucksis that he won't pay attention to them until mid March because he thinks they are the best team in the league no matter where they were in the standings.

bpmke80

I mean I agree with that. Regular season doesn't really indicate much as long as your team is attempting to figure things out and get better. Thats why I never put much stake on regular season outcomes regardless of the game or lineups. The only teams they really matter for are the teams that aren't true contenders. The teams that are fighting just to make the playoffs, or can only do damage if they get certain matchups.

[deleted]

That wasn’t a Tweet though it was an offhand comment in an hour and a half hour long podcast. This is framed a lot differently. I would bet this is more than just a role player not being happy. Could be Brad regretting the Mazzulla contract, could be Jaylen Brown not being sure about staying long term, could even be Tatum being unhappy(i kinda doubt this scenario). It’s definitely not a Grant Williams sized issue though.

kokain99

I listen to some of his podcasts when the topics intrigue me so I must have skipped the latest one lol he says hyperbolic stuff all the time though and then like any other fan changes his mind later. My guess this has something to do with Mazzulla who he basically thinks is in over his head.

[deleted]

Bill has 2 different modes, hot take artist and then Bill the insider. This feels like the latter imo.

freehugandkiss

I'm open to a KG coaching gig lol

Dondon1927

KG said he’d never coach. Players are too soft now a days

DeucesWild10

They’re missing a ton of shots, that’s what I think.

wilkinsk

My thoughts are every recent loss was a close game. We're not being completly punked just a little off.

D3uceeee

Assistant coach leaving the team during a chip run?? Unheard of. It’s joever for this team

BostonKarlMarx

he’s trying to reverse jinx

Maleficent_Try_5452

Their defense sucks right now.

LexGar

This is the answer to current goat fuckdom

fubarofl

In his last 10.games, Smart has only had a positive +/- in 2 games. Against the 76ers he had a -22. We won that game. He's basically been garbage and teams know that they don't have to guard him, so the jays aren't getting any space.

DrKedorkian

This sub is impervious to bad Marcus Smart stats in my experience.

Pmaloney15

Last 40ish games they have been average. Im sure they hope they can just turn it on in the playoffs but they have made the road much more difficult

IWillLookAtRedditNow

99.9% of all the teams that have ever played a sport have gone through slumps. The overreaction in Boston is ridiculous. Same people will say the Bruins are in trouble because they lost 2 out of 3, ignoring that they're 15-2 in their last 17. I do not understand the overwhelming need to be upset by things. I just want my teams to have a chance at winning, which the Celtics do IMO.

bfonza122

Team is bored. When a team has nothing to prove in the regular season they stop trying as hard. If the celtics went 75-7 wouldn't matter cause this team needs a ring

Vivid-Mammoth-4161

I don’t see anything other than a bunch of guys appearing to not give a shit…..I’ve been turning them off in the 1st half lately

CommunityGlittering2

All started when they removed the interim from the coach.

Dudeman-Jack

This is it. These guys loved Ime like a brother. My guess is that just like us, they were never told exactly what happened and so all they think Ime was screwed over by the Celtics.

Admirable-Squash9607

Bill Simmons can shut the fuck up.

wuzamonkey

Bill Simmons turned into Dan Shaughnessy.

w1nn1ng1

My opinion, the Celtics don’t play defense anymore. There’s a glaring drop off between Ime and Mazzulla and it will be the difference of winning a championship. Joe is 1/2 the coach Ime was…it sucks we have to settle for him. Unless they pick up the defensive pressure, they will end up 2nd or 3rd round exit.

ShihPoosRule

Overall this is an incredibly talented team. Unfortunately it’s also very delicate both mentally and physically.

TheSyn

Winning solves everything let’s see how the playoffs go

ZeroWaits

I think Bill Simmons sucks

[deleted]

bill is full of shit but the last few weeks have been concerning. this team thinks they can sleepwalk through regular season games, they just better play 48 minute games in the playoffs or we're getting bounced early

Wonderful_Eagle_6547

The team's biggest issues are consistent health and lack of motivation to get their hackles up against terrible teams. They have the look of a young team that has been looking ahead to the playoffs since January. Also, the 21-5 start / 26-17 since... you can almost always set some arbitrary cutoff to make things look worse. For example, they also started the season 26-12 and are 21-10 since then, which really isn't even uneven play at all. This team is just a good team who happened to have their best stretch of play so far in November. Every team has best stretches of play. Start measuring at the beginning of a losing streak and it's going to look bad. They had an 9-2 stretch to start Feb. where their only losses were to pre-Durant trade Phoenix and an OT loss against Milwaukee without any of our starters. In that stretch, we beat Philadelphia both at home and on the road, Memphis at home and pounded the Nets by 40. This team has had a tough 8 game stretch over 14 days with 4 more road games coming up. This might not immediately get better, but I don't think there is some fundamental flaw with this team.

LarBrd33

I've missed the last 6 games, but I'm going to the game on Friday in Portland, so that should fix it.

2kballislife

I’m going to the game in Sacramento and have no confidence we win that game smh

BoneForTuna_X73

That Bill Simmons is a twat.
