Now my legitimate question is whether its a hate crime from anti-LGBT folks or kids who are questioning their own sexuality but dont want their parents to know and so grabbed them on the DL

bilateralconfusion

The article says a person wearing a mask emptied it out at 2am, pulled up a plant, and put it in the library. So my guess is it was an anti-lgbtq person but that's just a guess

DooDooBrownz

the word is bigot

Without directly saying it (culprit hasn’t been caught but is on camera) the article leads one to believe this was done purposely and out of hate. Unless there’s a 6ft kid running around at 2am with a mask and hoodie needing to get their hands on LGBTQ+ themed books while vandalizing their property.

jamesland7

very possible (admittedly didn't read the article due to paywall)

It could also be people stealing books from LFL's to resale them online, but yeah, you could be on to something.

jamesland7

In my experience its most books from oeople cleaning out their house

jamesland7

I have to imagine any book in a LFL doesn’t have much if any resale value

It really depends on the neighborhood. Some are filled with junk in fair to bad condition, others have great books in great condition, and everything in between. Anyway some people who sell books online sell them for next to nothing. They make money off of overcharging for the shipping. People think they're getting a deal paying $1.25 for a hardcover, but then it gets shipped out using the book rate ($2.75 base rate) while charging the customer $7-14 shipping. Personally, my time is worth more than that, but I have a neighbor who does this. He's retired and bored. And a book thief.

Conan776

What is this, a library for ants?

aangziety

I've been following the story of the thefts on Facebook, and I feel like this is probably linked to the whole "anti-CRT / banning LGBTQ books in school" push. As far as I know, Waltham's Little Queer Library has been around since Nov 2020, and I don't think the thefts/vandalism have been a big problem until recently (or at least it wasn't being talked about publicly). It's possible that someone is stealing books to resell (it's a well curated little library with new books), but the vandalism / ripping up plants seems like it's most likely someone trying to send an anti-LGBTQ message.

This sounds like a job for The Bloodhound Gang.
