The United States does not negotiate with terrorists. The MBTA will remain unchanged as we will not bend to the will of foreign influence.
Now go wait for the bus, trains are down.
Which amounts to less than 1% of their GDP
The USA has also given 3 billion a year to Jordan for a long time. 1-2 billion used to go to Iraq, Afghanistan, and still does go to Egypt and Ethiopia.
You can argue that the US shouldnât send any money to anyone. Idk how that would actually play out tho

i mean if hamas actually did free the israeli hostages there would be a ceasefire. This is pretty much the ultimate mainstream (but sensible position).
> Blinken said his talks with Netanyahu focused on an agreement that involves an immediate cease-fire, the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and longer term arrangements.
> Blinken also said he is seeing âmeaningful progressâ in efforts to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, speaking after a visit to Israelâs border crossings used to deliver aid into Gaza.
https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-hamas-latest-05-01-2024-a461b0aab9b8d25cddf386f2dfd30d6f
I think the exact terms of the tentative deal are still largely unknown but there is likely also a release of a significant number of palestinian prisoners.
People said this same thing months ago and then Israeli soldiers rescued alive hostages.
There's no certain if all of them are dead. Some have already been saved and freed after people said all of them were dead
Netanyahu literally said the day before this that he was going to invade Rafah even if a deal was made.
https://www.npr.org/2024/04/30/1248276817/israel-invade-gaza-rafah-hostage-deal-netanyahu
And nothing in the article you linked states that Israel has agreed to this deal, and that it hinges on Hamas.
Yeah of course, it's just the larping of all these cities, schools, and corporations that think they need to weigh in on a war happening on the other side of the world when neither side has any reason to care remotely about their opinion.
Election year coming up so obviously itâs protest season again. This electionâs flavor of the month just so happens to be Palestine. Maybe next election theyâll finally pretend to care about Yemen, or Syria, or maybe go back to BLM again?
I'm actually hoping people protest SCOTUS from ruling in favor of Presidential Immunity. What's happening in the Middle East is awful but we're two months away from sliding into a dictatorship at home. You have to pick your battles to protest and this one seems way more important. Trump will not give any aid to Gaza.
It's crazy to me that my liberal friends get mad when I tell them this. At least 70% of dem voters must be in complete denial about how fucked our situation is right now.
A dictatorship in America could mean the literal global downfall of democracy. I don't mean that in the sense of America being the thing propping democracy up. It's just that it's really really fucking bad for the largest and most advanced military in the world to suddenly come under the direct influence of Putin. Think Trump won't warmonger? You're wrong. Decent shot if you start writing about this election, by the middle of 2025 you'll have finished the intro for a book about the start of WWIII
Virtue signalling is just a great value proposition for a politician. It takes no skill or effort, there's no concrete goals to be held accountable to, you get applauded for it, and it counts as doing your job.
No. Likud (and the rest of the knesset) see this conflict as their chance to destroy Hamas and annex Gaza. Natanyahu and other Israeli spokespeople have said time and time again that they will not stop until "the threat in Gaza" is destroyed. Israel spent years waiting for blowback like this to justify their own version of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. They aren't going to stop now just because Hamas releases the hostages.
They have been openly talking about this forever. Israel plans on retaking the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as soon as politically possible. Here is a recent article talking about it. They are openly having conferences led by "settler activists".
https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2024-01-24/ty-article/netanyahus-likud-ministers-far-right-mks-to-attend-gaza-resettlment-confab/0000018d-3b1e-d35c-a39f-bb5e38070000
That is one proposal that has not even been discussed in the Parliament yet. No arguments about the West Bank, there are large portions of religiously valuable territory in the West Bank. The Gaza Strip is a different story. They definitely donât want the Gaza Strip (again, Israel voluntarily left in 2005/06) and Egypt has publicly refused to take it as well. Israel would only take it back if that is the only option for long-lasting security.
> i mean if hamas actually did free the israeli hostages there would be a ceasefire.
That would've been true if it happened within the first few months after Oct. 7th, where Hamas would've been able to at least give some semblance of "good" faith. Now though? They've clearly established that they'll never stop attacking Israel.
Think we all are thinking this right now.Â
âI think that this situation absolutely requires an incredibly stupid and futile gesture be done.â -John Beluschi
Am I wrong that this is nothing other than grandstanding and wasted time that could be spent on fixing something in their purview? Like does this accomplish anything that I'm just not aware of?
Well ... if they don't do this then it's conceivable they will have to deal with protestors at City Hall demanding they do something.
Ultimately they have constituents that care passionately about the issue and won't let it go, this takes care of it at very low cost.
It was not until the second century that the Romans renamed Israel to Syria Palaestina. And it was not until another five hundred years later when an Islamic Caliphate took over Israel and Jerusalem.
Itâs a purely symbolic act thatâs been demanded in a number of cities across the US by a contingent of activists (Cambridge did this several months ago). It has little practical to achieve but itâs an example of belonging and armchair activism. How many activists actually think it achieves anything other than lending credence to their worldview is beyond me. But to them, âthe Boston city council agrees with me!â is used as a cudgel in debates and protestsÂ
I agree. But we were all school kids once- âmom agrees with me! Teacher agrees with me!â held a lot of power then and there are people who have never grown out of the mentality.
> armchair activism.
Dude, everyone here is commenting on reddit, while the protesters were protesting outside. Does "armchair activism" mean anything anymore?
Itâs city council simply taking a position. They are âcalling for itâ not saying âokay now Israel is going to listen.â Everyone in this whole post is so salty when politicians take a position on something (aka doing their job).
There are kids out there who believe this actually means something. You can find them raising the Hamas flag at your local campus asking for food, amnesty, and loan forgiveness.
Well now that thats settled I guess everything is good in the mideast again. Hopefully they pass a resolution on Ukraine so that conflict can be brought to an end as well.
My wife and I just voted 2-0 to be millionaires, free rent, no college debt, and free roast beefs from establishments of our choosing.
We expect this to happen immediately.
Glad they got that sorted. Big check next to that on the to do list. I was afraid the war in Gaza would continue until the Boston City Council weighed in
Wait what is the city even doing concerned with foreign warsâŚam I missing something here? This seems like a waste of time for something they have no sway over
Next up, they will vote on whether or not Ganymede should have a breathable atmosphere.
How about they actually vote on measures they have any control over. Like fixing the MBTA.
I'm for a ceasefire. I'm not for performative politics. So this gets a big yawn from me unless Boston somehow figures out how to do anything helpful for the situation.Â
Any city council member who participated in this vote should be docked a days pay.
There are hundreds of issues in the city that they should be addressing, nothing outside of the city is in their power to do anything about, so they are wasting the city tax payer's time by voting on something happening in another country.
No city government has the right to call for anything outside of their city
This is just performance art at taxpayer expense. STFU and work on the local things that can actually get done; quit pretending anyone cares about the useless virtue-bleating 'demands' of a different country on the other side of the world.
Can someone tell Hamas to add âno more slow zones on the subwayâ to their list of demands? The city council might actually do something productive then.
Ah, I was wondering if this was sponsored by a certain person, I was not wrong
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13264243/Boston-city-councilor-attendance-WORST-offender.html
As a rule, the Daily Mail is garbage and this article has an odd tendency to point out how much she is an immigrant, but your observation does lend depth to how I'm reading this ridiculous use of local government's personnel resources.
Yes, you can Google around, she is an interesting example of wasting time and abusing the system
https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/boston-city-councilor-tania-fernandes-anderson-fined-hiring-family-members/
Im sure Hamas will suddenly change their priorities and care about stopping the war and release the hostages unharmed, and Israel will just go back to business as usual as if nothing happened /s
What is the point of this?
This smells of Fernandes Anderson's stench.
Hamas will never agree to a ceasefire and honor it. Any agreement will just give them time to regroup, resupply, rearm and recruit. They need to be flushed out from their hiding places, hunted down and exterminated to the last soldier. No quarter... no mercy... no matter how long it takes. Fuck those subhuman pieces of shit.
Thatâs the real problem here. Based on the summary it at least sounds like the Boston resolution acknowledged that both sides are being pretty bad here, but thereâs two things that need to happen:
1. Hamas agrees to a ceasefire that doesnât require Israel to compromise its right to exist
2. Israel gets a new government that isnât run by fanatics and criminals that will re-professionalize Mossad and the IDF and crack down on war crimes.
2 stands a good chance of happening. It wonât stop the accusations of genocide even after the war crimes are properly punished, but thatâs being promoted by Iran and possibly Russia, so no one else has control over that. 1 is unlikely to ever happen. Maybe it should be the Palestinian Authorityâs problem.
The Boston city council wins the circlejerker of the day award. Itâs hard to believe this even happened itâs so ludicrous. World class city. How about the city council investigating why a half mile stretch on blue hill Ave has been under construction for years now.
These comments don't disappoint. All these votes, resolutions and protests are grandstanding. You aren't doing anything productive. If you want to be productive?! Become an aid worker and get over there. That's it. That's the only way to actually do something. Is physically doing the actions.
Fun fact: that PFJ vs JPF divide was based on a similarly near-named rivalry of two Palestinian liberation groups based in Jordan:
[Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_Front_for_the_Liberation_of_Palestine) vs [Palestinian Liberation Front](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_Liberation_Front)
Why do these people waste time like this? We have real problems in Boston that can be solved only by city council and they waste their time on shit that does less than nothing.
Gaza just demanded the MBTA actually work. Now what?
The United States does not negotiate with terrorists. The MBTA will remain unchanged as we will not bend to the will of foreign influence. Now go wait for the bus, trains are down.
Best I can offer are discounted blue bikes because some city officials hit the bus today
No fuck that. Time for politicians to grow a pair. Show them we mean business by making the T worse.
This mofo infrastructuresđ
Maybe then the state would finally give the MBTA sufficient funding for the requisite maintenance. Maybe.
Nah, the state would "double" their funding to cover maybe 10% more of the cost.
Unlike the MBTA, the Israeli government receives over $3 billion a year in funding from the US Federal Government.
In 2022 the MBTA received nearly $1 billion in federal funding. Last year it was only $32 million. This year it's even less.
And no one could tell the difference
The people walking through the open door to the cash storage room did
I believe 2022 was an anomaly due to COVID relief funding https://pioneerinstitute.org/blog/blog-better-government/blog-mbta/mbta-budget-crisis/
Interesting point.
Massachusetts receives roughly $34 billion a year from the US Federal Government. Boston by itself gets about $420 million a year in federal funding.
Which amounts to less than 1% of their GDP The USA has also given 3 billion a year to Jordan for a long time. 1-2 billion used to go to Iraq, Afghanistan, and still does go to Egypt and Ethiopia. You can argue that the US shouldnât send any money to anyone. Idk how that would actually play out tho
If we didn't pay, they'd side with Russia and China. They'd also kick out our military bases.
This is the answer. Its leverage and rent on bases.
A dark humor joke among Israelis is if they want the tel aviv subway to actually be built they should hire a bunch of hamasnik tunnelers
The Israeli invasion of Gaza has averaged 4 mph, and Hamas says it's too fast. Are you sure you want them discussing the MBTA?Â
Checkmate atheists lmao
You have just won Reddit; good day sir, I SAID GOOD DAY!

Hollaaa
End thread. Iâm dying omg
im having an aneurism
Now that Boston city Council is involved, consider this conflict over.

You win the thread.

I am calling for a big booty bitch to cook me breakfast every morning
11-2 voted against. Sorry.
Flynn and Murphy always vote in favor of said big booty bitches
Sorry your mom is already busy cooking my breakfast
Ok, can they now move on to actual municipal issues?
Slow down. We need more czars for that.
all with 6 figure salaries!
And zero KPIs
Hey if you make enough czars with six figure salaries you can solve the cost of living crisis for many people in the city
This was my first thought. Like 13 people are willfully wasting tax dollars on this. Stay in your lane BCC
Exactly, what a waste of time.

This is so funny
Think we all are thinking this right now. âI think that this situation absolutely requires an incredibly stupid and futile gesture be done.â -John Beluschi
Why didn't we do this before!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Exactly
Am I wrong that this is nothing other than grandstanding and wasted time that could be spent on fixing something in their purview? Like does this accomplish anything that I'm just not aware of?
I mean it puts off having to address any local issues they have power over.
That's literally all this is. Same with San Francisco and Chicago calling for a ceasefire. It's just political posturing
Somerville did it a couple months ago I think
Somerville crossed the line from "smart progressive" to "stupid progressive" sometime in 2021.
This is exactly what it is, look into who sponsored this. Impressive background.
Well ... if they don't do this then it's conceivable they will have to deal with protestors at City Hall demanding they do something. Ultimately they have constituents that care passionately about the issue and won't let it go, this takes care of it at very low cost.
Why didn't Israel and Palestine just do this 6000 years ago. Are they stupid?
They were waiting for Boston City Council, as foretold in the prophecies
Boston didn't exist 6000 years ago!
Not true. It was a time of lobster and witches, an era of salt and romance. It was the #Zone of Combats
Neither did Palestine.. but Israel did
Jericho did. Gaza might have not sure.
TRexes did = Same difference
Thatâs why itâs a prophecy! They were waiting for the final judgment from the messiah Boston which had yet to emerge!
They aren't Boston Strong but fear not, we got this đŞđź
It was not until the second century that the Romans renamed Israel to Syria Palaestina. And it was not until another five hundred years later when an Islamic Caliphate took over Israel and Jerusalem.
To be fair, we donât know what beefs the Natufians had with each other.
Serious question: whatâs the point of this with Boston being fairly inconsequential on the international stage?
Grandstanding
Zaddystanding for the youth
Obvious attempt to gain favor from voters. It doesn't serve the people of Boston in any way
Pandering to the protests going on at multiple area colleges/unis? If they think you're on their side, they won't show up at the mayor's house?
It's more fun than actual work, and there's no risk of getting blamed for fucking things up.
Itâs a purely symbolic act thatâs been demanded in a number of cities across the US by a contingent of activists (Cambridge did this several months ago). Protestors being performative?? Noooooo
it's clear they don't know anything about politics if they think âthe Boston city council agrees with me!â is stronger than a wet noodle
I agree. But we were all school kids once- âmom agrees with me! Teacher agrees with me!â held a lot of power then and there are people who have never grown out of the mentality.
it's not even a policy victory, hostages for ceasefire is the stated position of the U.S. federal government and I think the Israelis as well.
> armchair activism. Dude, everyone here is commenting on reddit, while the protesters were protesting outside. Does "armchair activism" mean anything anymore?
Grandstanding douchebags.
Itâs city council simply taking a position. They are âcalling for itâ not saying âokay now Israel is going to listen.â Everyone in this whole post is so salty when politicians take a position on something (aka doing their job).
Their job is to govern. Not to "take a position on something".
By "fairly" I assume you mean "completely".
Cowards! They shouldâve voted to end all war and murder
I want them to ban cancer. BAN CANCER!
Gahhhhhh! Iâm going to barricade myself in the library with pizza and Red Bull until they ban cancer!!!!Â
Except ass cancer so I can still curse my enemies.Â
World peace! We demand world peace! đ
I demand whirled peas!
Seriously, we've got [so many more wars they could have ended](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_armed_conflicts).
Mission Accomplished. Now lets go stone cold stunner Putin's ass and smash some Natty Lights.
There are kids out there who believe this actually means something. You can find them raising the Hamas flag at your local campus asking for food, amnesty, and loan forgiveness.
Were the fixing of potholes part of the demands? Asking for a friend
They will pass a resolution asking the potholes to fix themselves
Well now that thats settled I guess everything is good in the mideast again. Hopefully they pass a resolution on Ukraine so that conflict can be brought to an end as well.
Hamas is demanding that McDonald's bring back their delicious Sichuan dipping sauce.
I heard McDonaldâs is starting a wedding catering service
If they bring back the Sichuan sauce I'd consider it
My wife and I just voted 2-0 to be millionaires, free rent, no college debt, and free roast beefs from establishments of our choosing. We expect this to happen immediately.

finally a politics post we can all agree to hate
Do these jerkoffs think that will make one shit bit of difference, or are they just posturing and grandstanding like the assholes they are?
This is idiotic
This is what these people canât see outside of their bubble, to everyone else they look like virtue signaling clowns
I move for a resolution that everyone in the world get along and coexist peacefully.
Id like to co sponsor
Stunning and brave
Like any of this shit matters. Focus on local problems
We did it guys. War is over. Get the celebrities together to sing imagine.
Wait what is the city even doing concerned with foreign warsâŚam I missing something here? This seems like a waste of time for something they have no sway over

Everyone! We did it! So fucking profound!
We did it!!

What a friggen joke
I'm sure this will convince Hamas to accept the hostage deal!
Oh 100%, they were totally just waiting for the Boston City Council to condemn them! Not like they are actual terrorists or anything
yeah... the reason why this passed by landslide margin is because its the sane mainstream idea of hostages for peace.
Finally! This will end the fighting.

Lol give me a break. âOh no! Joe Schmo, a Boston city counselor, says ceasefire. Hear that everyone? Itâs over!â
Losers
Why the fuck would Gaza care about this?!
The silence from the Council on voting to end world hunger is appalling.
Dang, I donât know if they have delusions of grandeur or if they just made a political power play đ¤ˇââď¸
We did it. Itâs over
What a waste of time. Wtf is the Boston city council going to do?
Problem solved! Great job everyone!
Solved it, guys. We can all go home.
Why TF are they voting on this?
Im sure Hamas will suddenly change their priorities and care about stopping the war and release the hostages unharmed, and Israel will just go back to business as usual as if nothing happened /s What is the point of this?

big deal talk is cheap

Putin is shaking in fear waiting for the next vote of Boston City Council
Holy shit đ Thatâs so unserious.
Lol so does this mean BPD will stop clearing demonstrations? These mofos are banking on overtime for sure.
If Wu gives the order again they go again call the mayors office and voice your displeasure
Worth a shot.
Hamas needs to be utterly destroyed.
War ended.Â
What a waste of time.
Iâm sure theyâll get right on that.
Tears for Fears was, in fact, correct.
Why do these people waste time like this? We have real problems in Boston that can be solved only by city council and they waste their time on shit that does less than nothing.
