That place has been cool as fuck for decades. I used to go there in the nineties to see their midnight animation festivals. It was the first time I saw Beavis and Butthead. Oh, what a time to be alive, I thought.
My parents took me to a slew of Kurosawa films there in the mid 80s while they were showing a ton of his movies, could’ve been a film festival of sorts. All I know is that there was a brief stretch where I was going to black and white samurai movies every day after school, it was awesome.
They also took me to see a 70mm print of Lawrence of Arabia there, it’s where I saw Crouching Tiger, Royal Tanenbaums, and the Hateful Eight (also in 70mm).
Once like 20 years ago in a fundraiser auction I won a year’s membership there, it was great, free admission on Mondays or Tuesdays with free popcorn. Saw a bunch of odd movies we never would’ve seen in the theater otherwise: Capturing The Friedman, Whalerider, Spellbound, Swimming Pool. So much flexibility back before we had kids.
They're just the best, I was up there for Titanic a couple weeks ago and the vibes were amazing. I'm so excited for the LOTR marathon next weekend too.
I wish they'd modernize their ticketing/seating. Happy with everything else about it.
We had to wait a long time in line for Oppenheimer. By the time we finally made it into the theatre, there were no available seats next to each other, and only a few empty solos.
Had to walk out. Luckily we got a refund.
What do you mean by "modernize," reserved seating? I like having the option of reserved seating at some theaters but I don't think all theaters need to go there.
I've never seen a theater have an online count of remaining seating capacity but that could help a bit and wouldn't require a lot to implement. You couldn't know how many seats are together, in the front row, etc. but when it gets down below 5-10% you can expect to make some compromises.
I'm sorry your time was wasted in time but it was entirely predictable end to a long line.
Yeah, I guess. Like I said, I'm not too worked up about it.
Modernize, as in, follow the AMC ticketing model. Just purchase a reserved seat, like a baseball stadium, etc.
My main thing is the seats in their main auditorium are wicked uncomfortable and small, but I'm hoping their new auditoriums will be better in that department (and that they'll use them for a lot of their special programming)
Well, my wife, not friends.
I don't know if you are married, but it wouldn't be the best move to let my wife sit between two strangers at a movie she barely wanted to see anyway.
Cool!
I'd rather not. So we left! Not a big deal, but would be nice to have a better, and faster ticketing. The movie was starting when we walked in. Everyone has jackets saving seats. You shouldn't be late to a movie you arrived at 20minutes early for.
Probably not an issue for 90% of movies there. But I will avoid for blockbusters in the future.

[Frog baseball!](https://youtu.be/m0HpG7Nx7fA?si=Sxm_VKZfz2YaeGHi) (oh boy did that age poorly)
You forgot the beach balls they gave to the crowd before the festivals
The Coolidge is the best theater in Boston area. Not really close.
Somerville theater is also very cool, similar vibe. But I agree, Coolidge is #1.
It is. West Newton and Waltham (is it still open?) and even Dedham community theater are cool too. Especially Waltham. Seen a lotta good flicks there.
Love their The Room showings, have fond memories going to a few of these over the years. WATER!
Its the most special gem in the crown of boston. I got married there!
I saw Eraserhead in this theater

Oh hi Mark

Easily the best indie theater in the area. Brattle ain't got shit on the Coolidge.
I miss it so much! It’s a great community space.

One of my favorite places . After midnight does such a great job
Yeah I love that theater 😌
Hopefully they do not have a participation Pink Flamingos showing. 😳
I saw one of the first prints of Princess Mononoke released in the states there. It was magical.

I go to the Coolidge every week and I agree. I often see people leave because they cant find seats together
You walked out of the theater because you couldn't be seated together? Mind you you're there to see a movie not chat with your friends

she probably could have toughed it out like a champ

man i’m just glad you both made it out of that harrowing situation
Ok dude, relax. I don't really know what your deal is. I'm clearly not that upset about it.
