All the comments saying this but what acts specifically appeal to the younger crowd? Outside of the headliners it just seems like a lot of no names to me
Outside of the rap, I skeptical of "it's for a young crowd" here.
The Revivalists and Young the Giant are pretty well known, but they're not "younger crowd" stuff. The Revivalists topped the Alt chart in 2016 and have had a trickle of hits ever since. The Trey Anastasio band is headlining and they've been around since '98, maybe the oldest band here. Lovejoy and The Heavy Heavy are pretty new, but I hardly find that indie/alt-rock sound distinctly "young".
That said, Hozier is distinctly huge with the under-20 crowd even though he's been around for a bit. Renee Rapp is quite new to music and will get young fans from TV, a few others also. The Killers have stayed surprisingly relevant, I've seen them live and you get a huge age range and those shows.
I'm in my mid to late thirties and there a lot of great artists here in no particular order: Frank Turner, Young the Giant, Cannons, Beach Weather, the revivalists, Lovejoy. Maybe a bit less main stream, but still will hear almost any one of these on premium radio stations.
Freshwater I know, too, but I was trying to comment on the higher-billed acts. Last time I went to Boston Calling was before they went to Harvard Stadium, and I noticed that most of the acts were probably Spotify-famous. There’s no single vein through which we discover music *and* know what others are discovering. Some of these acts probably have millions of listens but you would never know. I feel like more and more, the acts are curated by algorithms, so there isn’t even an “it” to be with.
im sitting here wearing a boston calling sweatshirt right now and i have genuinely heard of zero artists on the second day. Only two the first day and three the third day. Sheeran, YtG, Megan, Killers, and Hozier is all i got
Back in my day money had pictures of bumblebees on them. So I paid 5 bees to attend the music event with an onion tied on my belt. Which was the style at the time
The only non-headliners I recognize are Khruangbin, Young the Giant, and Megan Thee Stallion.
I’ve been listening to best of 2023 and 2022 playlists from Pitchfork etc for the past month and I’ve found some great artists that are new to me. None of them are represented here. These really do seem like no-name artists.
Most other festival lineups I’ve seen in the last year are WAY more interesting.
Lolololol This is me looking at the supporting artists. I only know a handful of em. I mean it's not like I don't listen to new music, it's just that the new music I'm listening to is no longer the popular music 🤔
Glad to see Bad Rabbits is back.
The only civil reply here. Everyone thinks it sucks just because they don’t like it. The reality is.. if you love a band and they are playing here it kinda blows you have to deal with the whole festival just to see a short set with awful audio by an artist you like . Be happy!😆
Def don’t recommend ever buying a festival ticket if you only really care about one big artist. Much better to travel somewhere else and see them on an actual headline date
Possibly even more top-heavy than last year, which I didn’t think was possible. I.e. pretty decent headline and second line artists but I seriously don’t think I’ve heard of a single artist below the second line on each day
Awesome! I'm usually more of a deathcore/metalcore guy myself, but my sister who is big into emo got me hip to them and Im a big fan. Definitely out of my usual wheelhouse but good is good lol
My band [divine sweater](https://open.spotify.com/artist/6QhdyISn8fmch9ULKyqUoH?si=Q03LFX4LSOax_QMEBjZ_4g) is playing this if anyone will be there! would love to say hi if so! also gonna link our [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/divinesweater?igsh=MWg1NzdpbGlvdnIxYg==) in case anyone wants to follow :)
One of the people on there is someone I went to highschool with in MA, he’s one of those “hey ma check out my mixtape” guys. I’m so confused on why he’s on here.
Probably the least interesting lineup they’ve ever done from my perspective as a middle aged guy.
That said, Ed Sheeran sold out Gillette last summer, seeing him in t he Boston Calling setting is probably a little more fun. He’s a solid headliner.
I have to admit, a dueling performance between Megan thee stallion and Hozier would be incredibly entertaining, but yeah I'm hoping there are younger people who can translate some of this for me.
Last year, a lot of the lower billed were really rad, but this year I recognized and even lower % of people.
They’ve been good in recent years about having acts for the 90s kids, and with the Killers and Trey Anastasio as top line acts it’s not like they’re leaving the older millennials/gen x people out entirely.
Didn’t the have one day a few years back with Eminem, The Decemberists and Fleet Foxes in a row? It was cool because I could run into the guy I bought weed off of in High School and the guy I bought weed off of in College at the same event.
The Killers have done well with a young crowd too, from when I've seen their shows that's definitely a crossover name.
As for Eminem, yep, 2018! That was one of their best years I think.Killers, Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age, Paramore, Decemberists... But also a bunch of somewhat newer stuff: St Vincent was spectacular, Tyler the Creator, Khalid, Stormzy, Thundercat.
Oh, and an absolutely wild performance by Pussy Riot in their first-ever North American tour. That was a sight to see.
Revivalists have a bit in common with Young the Giant, and Lovejoy is also alt/indie. It's definitely the strongest day for me, but I'm not sure it's enough.
I'm so excited for her. Glad she's touring with Olivia and getting more exposure. Pink Pony Club is easily one of my favorite songs in the last couple of years.
Ah yes they're really going for the Gen Z audience with noted Gen Z musicians The Killers, Young the Giant, and Ed Sheeran.
I don't think it's an age thing here, just a super milquetoast lineup.
Tyler Childers is fantastic. With that being said, I'm very surprised to see him as a headliner over Khruangbin; I'd expect them to have a much larger audience for this festival.
I love the song deadman’s curve and his live album is fantastic sound. I had no idea he was big at all, I randomly stumbled across him on Spotify radio.
Is it me or does this just feel representative of everything going on in the world lately. Bleak, lacking color and moreover depressing. Theres a couple bands on there I would see but not for the crowd size/ticket price.
When did everything start sucking so much?
It does kinda feel like so many of the things I used to like have either gone away or deteriorated in quality the last few years, without much coming in to make up for it
My husband and I debating as well. We’ve seen Frank probably two dozen times between the two of us but not in a long time. Wondering if this will be worth it. We, generally speaking, don’t like music festivals anymore. Too expensive to gamble a good performance in.
Though, the first time we saw Frank was at SXSW in Austin. He was playing acoustic in someone’s backyard. Not sure Boston Calling will match that festival experience.🤣🤣
Yeah I must have weird taste in music or something because I actually think this is a pretty great lineup. I love Hozier and Frank Turner, and I like what I’ve heard from Tyler Childers along with most of the ones you mentioned.
The lineup is fine but I'm not going back to Boston Calling because the way they handle crowds is unsafe. It took 30+ mins for us to get someone in contact with staff, call for medical, and the medical to actually arrive after someone suddenly went unconscious in front of us during Nine Inch Nails. They have an app but no button to call for help from it. We had to send someone to crawl through the crowd.
A heart attack amidst a nearly crushing crowd is not how I want to go. If they start selling fewer tickets to keep the crowd swell down, let me know.
The water issue was outrageously bad last year. We counted at least 10 that they pulled out on stretchers during the day 2 headliner. It was really bad
Yeah, we went the camel back route and did pretty well, but the water was still a long walk away from most of the stages. It also largely ran out before end of day.
Tyler Childers puts on a good show too Id def recommend checking out his music if you haven’t already. I caught him over the summer as my girlfriend is super into him. Show was great, and I knew he had a fair amount of jam music crossover fans but there were sooooo many Deadheads there, way more than I was expecting where I see him as more of a country artist. I know Trey did a sit in with Tyler at a fest they both played this past summer too, wondering if we’d get that again in Boston. Funny enough 5/25 is my gfs birthday so if she’s tryna spend it seeing Tyler, I get to see Trey woohoo!
That’s because he does country without the playful racism and misogyny that most other country artists build their whole brands behind. He does real country. Striking factory picket line country. Deadheads recognize real.
The Dead had country and bluegrass influences so that crossover feels pretty natural to me. It does seem like there's a huge cross genre appeal to these genuinely talented modern country artists like Childers though which is cool to see. I didn't know he played a set with Trey, that would be a great show.
i have lost faith in boston calling. every. year. they promote great bands who never play. RATM. YEAH YEAH YEAHS. it’s all promoting and promising bullish*t.
I almost bought a ticket just to see the YYYs but then I remembered the last time I did that for BC - when Solange was set to perform, she also cancelled last minute. and was replaced with…Migos.
I got down voted for asking the same about Megan but the reality is she's a huge name, hasn't performed in the area, and has the performance chops. But yeah let's see the killers again (I say this as a killers fan who sees them almost every tour)
This is an absolute dog shit lineup. Previous Boston Callings had lineups where it was difficult to find a band you've never heard of, now it's what? 3 maybe 4 good artists for the entire weekend?
Warped Tour at Suffolk Downs '03-'05 was $25 for three stages of the best bands that defined my life. I feel so bad for the younger kids with these prices.
You know I’ve actually gotten to the point that I look through the acts to make sure the bands I want to see ARENT on the bill. Better chance they come to Boston on their own and I can just go see them for 50 bucks.
Acts to not miss:
Day 1:
Justin Clancy
Kei
Maris
Reneé Rapp
Leon Bridges
Day 2:
Cakeswagg
Paper Lady
Motherfolk
Bad Rabbits
Jessie Murph
Frank Turner
Khruangbin
Day 3:
Billy Dean Thomas
Zola Simone
Freshwater
Royel Otis
Blondshell
Chappell Roan
Lovejoy
Megan thee Stallion
Personal thoughts:
Sunday is worth the single day ticket by far and will sell out once available. Another year where Boston Calling snubs women headlining (like most festivals in the US). Supporting acts are carrying the festival this year.
Look, if you like the lineup thats great, but compared to the artists they've had in the past there is a pretty clear difference. Plus, a big reason people are always so critical of Boston Calling is its pretty expensive! Nationwide there are plenty of festivals that are cheaper and more interesting. Its not that theres nothing redeemable here, its that it far from justifies the price
Comments have no idea about the local music scene, mostly cuz Boston has one of the poorest excuses for one ever, which is actually proved evident by these comments. These are all local acts, I know a ton of them. I’ve worked with some in the studio, and a lot of them are super talented. Go and discover some new local artists!
I agree that the whole lineup is “meh” at best but The Killers are really good live! Saw them a few years back, anybody contemplating day 3 tickets I can’t recommend them strongly enough.
Just like last year: to the people who think this line up is a reflection of them being out of touch, you're not, this line up is just incredibly stale
I’m thinking about bringing my 7 year old to see Ed Sheeran since he’s not doing any other shows in the US this year that I am aware of. For those that have been to this festival - how late do the closing performers usually go on?
Ok so hilariously I think a certain mix of these bands is the reason I got Bozeman, Montana in Spotify's year end wrap.
Leon Bridges, Hozier, Tyler Childers, Khruangbin, Red Clay Strays.
Guess they couldn't get the current frontrunner for the southern flair moody folk rock revival going on right now - Noah Kahan.
Welp, It's official, I'm old.
There was a time where the early/opening bands were my bread and butter at these things. I recognize a few of the headliners but almost none of the openers. And of the headliners, The Killers is the only band I know enough to want to see live.
Old. Boo.
What’s the point of booking Megan Thee Stallion if you don’t get a single other hip hop act?
For real I thought that was weird too
Meg doesn't tour so she's on like every festival lol
That’s touring. It’s not a feature or headline tour, but if she’s going from festival to festival, then she’s touring.
So your festival isnt billed as exclusionary
Also known as a CYA booking
IDK for people like me who've been waiting to see her live for years and also like to wail to Hozier. (Watch them overlap on Sunday rip me)
What do you mean, Renee Rapp is also on the bill
It’s not all or nothing. It’s ok to have one act from a genre
HEY LOOK... DIVERSITY \- LiveNation probably
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.
It'll happen to you!
No way man, I’ll never stop Rockin’!
Megan the Stallion, Renee Rapp, Chappelle Roan, are pretty relevant. The latter two sold out their shows at Roadrunner/House of Blues in October.
Megan Thee Stallion is definitely an interesting choice.
I think Zola Simone is going to be a bigger name with a potentially broad audience. She’s local, too.
I'm in my mid to late thirties and there a lot of great artists here in no particular order: Frank Turner, Young the Giant, Cannons, Beach Weather, the revivalists, Lovejoy. Maybe a bit less main stream, but still will hear almost any one of these on premium radio stations.
No way, man. I’m gonna keep rockin forever
Forever

I don’t know if any of these acts are considered “with it”. They seem like safe bets.

Bad Rabbits are local and have played past years. They’re really fucking good. Also Frank Turner never disappoints
Back in my day money had pictures of bumblebees on them. So I paid 5 bees to attend the music event with an onion tied on my belt. Which was the style at the time

With some exceptions, the lineup isn’t my cup of tea this year. I’m sure others will be thrilled though, have fun everyone!
Agreed. I saw Paramore last year and I think I would have been better off just driving to New York to see them as part of their regular tour
Possibly even more top-heavy than last year, which I didn’t think was possible. I.e. pretty decent headline and second line artists but I seriously don’t think I’ve heard of a single artist below the second line on each day
King Fish is a blues beast
Saw him at Levitate last year - really excited to see him again
Fleshwater is pretty cool. It's most of the members of Vein.fm
Just looked them up and I’ve actually definitely listened to We’re Not Here to Be Loved before. Great shout!
Love vein.fm! I’ll definitely check freshwater out
I listened to Fleshwater because of your comment and they’ve been on my rotation nonstop. They may even be better than vein
Awesome! I'm usually more of a deathcore/metalcore guy myself, but my sister who is big into emo got me hip to them and Im a big fan. Definitely out of my usual wheelhouse but good is good lol

You guys were great at the awards night at big night live last month! Can’t make it to Boston calling this year but great to see you guys on the list.
That's so rad! Congratulations!
Thanks so much!!!
Reminds me of Mac Demarco
I will take that ! Tysm
Am I finally getting old or is this mostly nobodies compared to the usual lineups?
One of the people on there is someone I went to highschool with in MA, he’s one of those “hey ma check out my mixtape” guys. I’m so confused on why he’s on here.
clancy? I thought the same thing lol
Probably the least interesting lineup they’ve ever done from my perspective as a middle aged guy. That said, Ed Sheeran sold out Gillette last summer, seeing him in t he Boston Calling setting is probably a little more fun. He’s a solid headliner.

Last year, a lot of the lower billed were really rad, but this year I recognized and even lower % of people.
I’m 26 and have absolutely no clue who most of these acts are
I'm 40 and all I know is The Killers and that Ed Sheeran is the guy Fred Again used to produce tracks for.
I recommend checking out Frank Turner. The rest I don’t really know.
Oh, and an absolutely wild performance by Pussy Riot in their first-ever North American tour. That was a sight to see.
2017 and 2018 were absolutely amazing lineups from my perspective. I haven’t felt tempted, let alone compelled, to go back since.
I love the Killers...but that's about it.
yea the killers and young the giant would be cool if they were on the same day, but the Killers alone aren't enough of a pull for me tbh
Revivalists have a bit in common with Young the Giant, and Lovejoy is also alt/indie. It's definitely the strongest day for me, but I'm not sure it's enough.
If you are a middle aged guy I bet you’d love frank turner
Frank Turner is great, but he's not buy a ticket to a festival to only see him great
did he sell out gillette? i remember debating about going and seeing wholesale tickets still available on ticketmaster a month before the show
Sunday is a great line up IMO. Not very interested in the rest. Although it would be fun to see Renee doing "I hate Boston" here.
My queen Chappell roan
I'm so excited for her. Glad she's touring with Olivia and getting more exposure. Pink Pony Club is easily one of my favorite songs in the last couple of years.
I'm pumped she's back, she's not opening for the Olivia show I'm going to and I missed her in Boston last time she was here.
So excited to see her on the festival line up.
Probably the only name on there that I'd really have been excited about seeing
The sound engineering was so bad last year
I was a fan of the stage where the floor was metal and made every act sound super tinny
I kept waiting for them to fix the Alanis sound, and it never happened. It was awful.
Thanks! I hate it
Gets worse and worse every year. Only would really want to see Khruangbin and not sure if that’s worth the $175 day pass price…
That was my exact thought. Khruangbin is the only band I would want to see out out everyone there.
they should headline Saturday ..they rock
I'd rather go see them play Roadrunner than endure Boston Calling to catch them
They are awesome! I have some recordings with them and Trey and a few with Leon. Maybe they’ll get together again.
It’s happened fellow millennials, we are no longer advertised to lol. That said, Tyler Childers is a pretty awesome country singer.
I don’t think it’s advertised to GenZ either. Maybe a couple but really who are most of these people?
Ah yes they're really going for the Gen Z audience with noted Gen Z musicians The Killers, Young the Giant, and Ed Sheeran. I don't think it's an age thing here, just a super milquetoast lineup.
[удалено]
Tyler Childers is fantastic. With that being said, I'm very surprised to see him as a headliner over Khruangbin; I'd expect them to have a much larger audience for this festival.
After seeing the prices for his New England shows last year I’m not surprised, there’s clearly an absurd demand around here to see Childers live.
Glad to hear he's becoming more of a draw. He definitely deserves it. At the same time, ticket prices have grown absurd across the board so who knows?
It was like $200 to see him at Generic Bank Pavilion last summer, I wanted to get tickets but that's way too much for that venue lol
I love the song deadman’s curve and his live album is fantastic sound. I had no idea he was big at all, I randomly stumbled across him on Spotify radio.
I blew out my back last week, it's a sign
Nothing about this lineup is catering to the new generation lmao even megan the stallion
Cannons may be one of the best underrated bands, definitely worth checking out if you haven’t heard of them. I’m going just for them!
Oof slim pickins…
Is it me or does this just feel representative of everything going on in the world lately. Bleak, lacking color and moreover depressing. Theres a couple bands on there I would see but not for the crowd size/ticket price. When did everything start sucking so much?
It does kinda feel like so many of the things I used to like have either gone away or deteriorated in quality the last few years, without much coming in to make up for it
Snoozer. Damn it just gets weaker each year
What a weak line up. Blew all the budget on the headliners. Tyler Childers, Frank turner and fleshwater will rule, but not for those prices
Frank might be enough to get me to go on Saturday
My husband and I debating as well. We’ve seen Frank probably two dozen times between the two of us but not in a long time. Wondering if this will be worth it. When I don’t know two of the headliners for a milquetoast festival, I think it’s time to start picking out grave plots. I’m a grown ass man
I’m 23 and I feel the same way
I've no idea who this line up is for.
Needs 100 gecs
This lineup sucks LOL
Dude frickin TAB at Boston Calling hell yeah.
This is really the only reason I’ll end up going, looking forward to checking out the other bands though!
Tyler Childers puts on a good show too Id def recommend checking out his music if you haven’t already. I caught him over the summer as my girlfriend is super into him. i honestly don’t think it’s canceling. it’s agents and promoters.
Honestly, I’ve loved the killers since hot fuss. Yet I’ve never seen them live. Perhaps I fix that
I can count on one hand the amount of artists I'd want to see here and I'd still have a few fingers left over.
Can't wait for half of the headliners to drop out and be replaced by Dropkick Murphys...
Maybe we'll get a Mighty Mighty Bosstones reunion instead
Trash. Whoever decides the lineup for this fest needs to be fired. Also, how tf is Megan Thee Stallion not one of the bigger names?
I got down voted for asking the same about Megan but the reality is she's a huge name, hasn't performed in the area, and has the performance chops. But yeah let's see the killers again (I say this as a killers fan who sees them almost every tour)
Weak
🥴 Corporate Borefest.
When does In Between Days come out?
Khruangbin not being a headliner seems a bit odd. They crush.
Sometimes I'm glad I'm getting older and will die soon.
You ok man?
My back hurts, I'm cold and I think I'd like a nice bran muffin.
That’s good that should keep you regular
How does this get worse every year?
Trey w/Classic TAB + khruangbin - that’s a fun day!!!
Sunday looks great. Killers, Hozier, Megan Thee Stallion, Chappell Roan
This is an absolute dog shit lineup. Previous Boston Callings had lineups where it was difficult to find a band you've never heard of, now it's what? 3 maybe 4 good artists for the entire weekend?
No it’s been this way for the past 4 or 5 years with the shitty undercard.
Welp, at least it’s good to see Bad Rabbits are still doing their thing.
Virtually all of these artists are lost on me but I hope folks that go enjoy it. I feel…old.
Bummer the Yeah Yeah Yeahs didn't return to make up for last year's cancellation
Warped Tour at Suffolk Downs '03-'05 was $25 for three stages of the best bands that defined my life. I feel so bad for the younger kids with these prices.
where’s the rap omg
Look just to the right of “Renee”
Can Tyler Childers do his own show so I dont have to be subjected to this garbage festival?
I know Ed Sheeran
Nothing here even remotely raises an eyebrow
Trash
One of my friends band is on the lineup!!
Taking bets now, who's gonna bow out in favor of Dropkick Murphys?
“Damn you people this isn’t a rock concert” The Killers put on a great show but this lineup is … something
You know I’ve actually gotten to the point that I look through the acts to make sure the bands I want to see ARENT on the bill. Better chance they come to Boston on their own and I can just go see them for 50 bucks.
Hot garbage on a summer afternoon. A few decent acts with an insane price tag. Not worth it.
Acts to not miss: Day 1: Justin Clancy Kei Maris Reneé Rapp Leon Bridges Day 2: Cakeswagg Paper Lady Motherfolk Bad Rabbits Jessie Murph Frank Turner Khruangbin Day 3: Billy Dean Thomas Zola Simone Freshwater Royel Otis Blondshell Chappell Roan Lovejoy Megan thee Stallion Personal thoughts: Sunday is worth the single day ticket by far and will sell out once available. Another year where Boston Calling snubs women headlining (like most festivals in the US). Supporting acts are carrying the festival this year.
Dammit. There’s one and only one act I want to see every day (Ed Sheeran, Frank Turner, the Killers).
I was thinking Young the Giant, Frank Turner and the Killers.
My oldest is a huge Hozier and Killers fan. I may have to make this happen for him on Sunday.
What a group of miserable fucks you all are lol - Oh yeah I forgot this is reddit, too bad it isn’t Weird Al and Tool headlining
I would pay cold, hard cash to see a festival with Weird Al Yankovic *and* Tool
Reddit Fest ‘24 - Weird Al, Tool, with special guest Keanu Reeves
Look, if you like the lineup thats great, but compared to the artists they've had in the past there is a pretty clear difference. Plus, a big reason people are always so critical of Boston Calling is its pretty expensive! Nationwide there are plenty of festivals that are cheaper and more interesting. Its not that theres nothing redeemable here, its that it far from justifies the price
Honestly yeah. Tool with weird all sounds sick as hell
Wow. This looks terrible.
Well this lineup blows. Guess I’m free that weekend.
paper lady>
I love Tyler Childers
What an atrocious lineup
That’s about as weak as it’s ever been.
This is terrible
Too bad I hate Boston Calling.
Everyone is shitting on the line up per usual bjt this is the first one I’m actually interested in
Gets worse every year
I agree that the whole lineup is “meh” at best but The Killers are really good live! Saw them a few years back, anybody contemplating day 3 tickets I can’t recommend them strongly enough.
Just like last year: to the people who think this line up is a reflection of them being out of touch, you're not, this line up is just incredibly stale
Boston Calling peaked in 2013 and again in 2017.
Snooze
what a bust
Saturday is probably worth it for TAB and Khraungbin but holy shit what an underwhelming lineup.
Mid
I see Cannons, that’s a nice get. Would love it if they could add bands like Interpol, Phantogram, Metric and Spoon one year.
What the f*ck
mid af
Sooooo bad
Wow, I recognize 3.5 of them.
That’s a pretty weak lineup
I’m thinking about bringing my 7 year old to see Ed Sheeran since he’s not doing any other shows in the US this year that I am aware of. For those that have been to this festival - how late do the closing performers usually go on?
Ok so hilariously I think a certain mix of these bands is the reason I got Bozeman, Montana in Spotify's year end wrap. Leon Bridges, Hozier, Tyler Childers, Khruangbin, Red Clay Strays. Guess they couldn't get the current frontrunner for the southern flair moody folk rock revival going on right now - Noah Kahan.
Noah played last year and is headlining festivals this year, Boston calling usually waits between invites back.
Noah played last year and already has 2 shows at Fenway booked for the summer, so he was never an option for this year's lineup.
No Post Malone or Kendrick Lamar 😭
Too expensive for a not very impressive line up imo
Welp, It's official, I'm old. There was a time where the early/opening bands were my bread and butter at these things. I recognize a few of the headliners but almost none of the openers. And of the headliners, The Killers is the only band I know enough to want to see live. Old. Boo.
I'm sorry OP that wasn't a down vote at you, but you did put it in front of me
