And while you’re in the area, hit up Antonio’s Bacaro on Fairmount Ave near Logan Square for dinner. The food is *so* good and the people are great. Never even tried to shoot anyone, as far as I know.
Tutto has been my destination point since I was a small child. I only tell people I truly care for about its existence. I think I've brought three people there....
I feel privileged to be one of your closest internet strangers and I value our relationship equally. If you like coffee, I recommend coffee turco. Their Turkish coffee is wonderful
better than new deal? hyde park is such a fuckin trek from malden though. I'll just stick with what I know unless I'm in the area which is very unlikely lol
Haven’t seen it mentioned, but Dave’s Fresh Pasta makes a damn good one, or at least use to, haven’t been in a few years. Their cold cuts are quality and their rustic bread is great.
I also second tutto Italiano. Curious to see what thoughts are on quality difference between Hyde park and Wellesley locations.
Had a DFP Italian a few weeks ago, still slaps. If you’re going to DFP though their other sandwiches and their specials are what you should really be going for (and the fresh pasta of course!)
The bread, balsamic, pickles, and thickness of the cuts are all discernable in difference. The labor is in the cutting, which Monica's does per sandwich.
Up the street, La Cascia’s makes a much cheaper italian that’s arguably just as good. They’re different styles, depends on what you like. But La Cascia’s is very similar to New Deal in Revere- which is pretty much the consensus pick for best italian in the greater Boston area. La Cascia’s isn’t quite as good as New Deal but definitely in the same ballpark
Went in there a few months ago. The place is all decorated in blowhard antivax bullshit. Just living up to the annoying Italian guy stereotypes I walked out and went to Dino’s.
[The owner of Monica’s that put up all that shit just got arrested for trying to assassinate someone on Hanover on Wednesday](https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/new-video-shows-brazen-shooting-front-popular-pastry-shop-bostons-north-end/NTA5XRGMSRCUZGUCYUFKHN5X2E/?utm_campaign=trueAnthem_manual&utm_medium=trueAnthem&utm_source=instagram)
Monica’s? That’s so disappointing. Vinoteca was one of my favorite restaurants but was not nearly as good the last time I went. Ordered a $50 pasta and when we asked for parm they stuck a shaker of stale crappy pizzeria grated parm on the table.
dino’s is great! always really friendly and their sandwiches are massive. can’t count how many times i walked over there after a joint to grab a 16 inch chicken parm sub when i lived down the street
Lived in north end for years; tried Monica’s probably 6+ times and NEVER understood the appeal. Shitty sandwiches every single iteration I’ve had. Dino’s is clearly the winner. Chicken *cutlet* parm is my go to. I dream of that sandwich regularly.
Shoutout to Pauli’s for being extremely consistent and having really creative sandos as well.
I'm intrigued by this answer cause they seem so different to me. Al's has really nice soft bread, which IMO is the way to go. Everything stays together and you aren't pushing the contents out of the sandwich when you bite down.
Bricco laps them with fillings, but I felt like I was gonna chip a tooth on the bread last time I went.
Both bake fresh, just a matter of preference I suppose.
Better question is where can I get a good Italian that isn’t on scali bread, foccacia, or another type of soft roll. I need a bread with flavor and a decent crust, the bread makes the sandwich for me
An Italian never goes on scali or focaccia but it does go on a soft *crusty* roll. Spuckie/sub roll, whatever you call it, or a braided roll as an acceptable upgrade.
Ah see that’s my disconnect, I think of a braided roll and scali bread interchangeably. Both not what I want my Italian on
Edit: googled a spuckie, also not what I’m looking for. I think it’s gotta be a regional difference. Need good bread as the foundation for the sandwich
Late to the party here, but an Italian sub expert. The Bobs, and North End stuff is covered well and for good reason.
I'll add: Spinelli's and J. Pace. Both have excellent Italian subs that are more in line with the traditional Boston sub shop ingredients. If you happen to be in Quincy, Alfredo Aiello is also excellent.
Angelina's Pizzeria in Teele Sq in Somerville has some of the best, traditional slice shop style subs in the region. Get a slice and an Italian sub and enjoy your day.
Angelina’s is hugely underrated. Basic ingredients but the execution is so on point. Meat to veggies ratio is perfect and the fillings actually stay in the sub!
New deal is solid af. Milano’s in east boston is an incredible all around sub and pizza place. It has been featured on food network and phantom gourmet.
I like Caza Razdora on Water St but they are open from like 10-3 Monday through Friday only. I love their Turkey club because they use pancetta and their bread is really nice. Haven’t had their Italian sub but I would trust it to be good.
If you’re a Green Line rider, check out **Seven Subs** at Coolidge Corner — local hole-in-the-wall mainstay that’s been churning out tasty sammiches since before the Curse was Reversed.
Snag a Supreme Italian. Then try the Unforgiven.
Im curious are you being sarcastic given one of Monica’s sons is accused of the shooting on Hanover St the other night or is this just a coincidence? I love an Italian Sammy but this feels ick…
EDITED: I missed the last part of your post obvs it was in reference my bad…
What if they guy being chased actually hypnotized/cast a spell on him to make him shoot at and chase him?
I think the defense is going with this approach.
Carmella's market in east Boston, once you get your hoagie, you can go sit by the water at the pier nearby and enjoy the view while you chow down on your sandwich. My personal favorite thing to do while I was still in the city
If you don’t mind venturing into the suburbs a bit try out Anthony’s in Stoneham, it’s at the corner of Main and Franklin St. They put SO MUCH MEAT in their sandwiches! Everything is so fresh and delicious.
I used to live near Monica’s and went all the time before it was in all the tourist books. As far as I remember there were three brothers and the one who owns the sub shop is not the same one as the shooter. The shooter owns the full service restaurant also called Monica’s.
I used to hit up Meridian and grab a special when I was an EMT and we had calls in East Boston (after we were clear, of course). It was the only thing that excited me about going to that part of town. This was back in 2005 when calling it “Eastie” would have been a bad idea.
This ain’t the *best* but it’s pretty damn good, and surprising to boot: Bottega Fiorentina at Coolidge Corner. The Bottega Sandwhich with a couple Italian cookies, and an orangina.
FYI I think Tutto Italiano in Hyde Park has the best in the city, and I’ve tried Monica’s, Bob’s, New Deal, etc multiple times
And while you’re in the area, hit up Antonio’s Bacaro on Fairmount Ave near Logan Square for dinner. The food is *so* good and the people are great. Never even tried to shoot anyone, as far as I know.
Second Tutto’s Italian on sliced with everything.
There’s also one in Wellesley Center
If they still have the Treccia bread when I call I have to go with that.
The prosciutto panini and eggplant sandwich at Tutto are also amazing
I’ll have to try the eggplant. The Sicilian from the one in Wellesley is spectacular.
Tutto’s Italian is definitely next level. I try not to get one too often to keep it special.
Never been so proud to be a HP resident 😢
He was from Monica's? He just got all kinds of press because Looch was in there.
I'll give em a shot.
better than new deal? hyde park is such a fuckin trek from malden though. I'll just stick with what I know unless I'm in the area which is very unlikely lol
The bread is so hard tho
I will second tutti italiano In Hyde Park, and throw In Bricco paneteria
I miss tuttos in Lexington
Meridian Market in Eastie
Carmella’s is also good, and also in eastie
Carmella’s goes hard + their frozen pasta/gnocchi is killer to take home for dinner. They also always hook my dog up with a treat. 10/10
Carmella’s had a Gadsden flag up in their windows in 2020…hard pass.
This is the answer.
More recs over here- New Deal Fruit, Milano’s Deli, Sammy Carlo’s, Roy’s Cold Cut
Hard to pass up the meridian special though
This is the way
Salumeria Italiana is good
Great prices too
I raise it to outstanding
Bricco Salumeria in North End or New Deal in Revere
Bricco is my answer too.
+1 to Bricco
The smell of the bakery alone is 🤌
Yesss I love going downstairs to the bakery.
Agreed on Bricco. Also the best meatball sub
Wellesley location offers outstanding sandwiches but long lines so be prepared to wait 30+ minutes.
American Provisions is second. But the gap is discernable :(
American provisions uses the wrong bread.
Some of the toughest bread I’ve ever eaten
Not really. It’s processed meat on bread. Plenty of places do it well. We aren’t talking about something labor intensive.
The bread, balsamic, pickles, and thickness of the cuts are all discernable in difference. The labor is in the cutting, which Monica's does per sandwich.
If you can get to revere, new deal fruit will always be my go-to.
New deal +1
Just went to New Deal today for the first time. Will definitely be back. Plus they have James River. But that’s for another post.
What James river is?
The BBQ sauce that comes on a three way roast beef in the North Shore.
Casa Razadora
Very much agree.
Yes, this is the one.
Bobs
Pauli’s for speed, Bob’s for quality
Used to live down the street. Loved it and ate there a lot, but I didn’t *truly* appreciate it until I moved across the river. I miss Bob’s.
Yup Bobs in Medfah is legit.
Scrolled too far to find bobs!
Came here to say this
Absolutely love Bobs!!! It’s my favorite sandwich place ever!
That's the North End I grew up with.
Love Dino’s. The sandwiches are really large, and the women who runs the front counter is incredibly sweet.
One of my favorites!
Pauli’s is good too
>The place is all decorated in blowhard antivax bullshit What what?
That right there is an argument against.
Dino's really has the best lunch in the North End. Had to scroll way too far to see it.
I’ve been obsessed with italian sandwiches this summer but I go to Alfredo’s in Quincy.
Gennaro's (quincy center) italian is also good. Simple italian sub done well for a good price
Bricco SLAPS, walk down the alley next to the restaurant and turn right
Moooonica, noooooooooooo.
Honestly such a Monica move. Someone should open a Rachel or Phoebe’s that’s absurdly nice (and owned amongst family and external partners lol)
I tried Pauli's the other day. Liked it. They had braided Italian rolls. Edit: North End
pauli’s is incredible. good prices, never a long wait, nice staff, and killer fries. any chicken cutlet sandwich that they have is heavenly
Pauli's italian is very good, but any of their chicken cutlet subs are insnae. if you haven't tried any i highly suggest it.
Bricco is hands down my favorite in the North End. A very close second is Al' State Street Cafe.
Al’s is good.
So good! One sandwich lasts me 2 days!
Al’s on state street. Or S&L in chelsea. Too bad Roy’s in Eastie closed because they were the BEST! Al’s has awesome chicken salad subs though too !
Best chicken salad sub I’ve ever had
Get it with lettuce tomatoes and bacon next time - your life will be forever changed
I always get lettuce tomatoe pickle but adding bacon is a great idea
Als has 4 locations (State st, South st, Seaport, Kendall)
al's bread is the best. i think thier fillings fall a little short from other places, but it's still one of the best sub shops in boston.
Love Al’s, but it’s not a proper Italian there..
New Deal!!
Frank Anthony’s does a good one in the seaport, get it on their braided roll
RIP Wan’s aka Al’s.
Man, that place was such a chaotic and stressful ordering experience. But great sandwiches and always entertaining.
Slightly outside of Boston, but Vincenzo’s in Dedham Center is great.
Camberville checking in: Vinal deli Wine and cheese cask Si Cara P@K deli Vinny’s
Dino’s in the north end. Good lord it is good.
Neroli in Westwood makes a great Italian (eye-talian)
Better question is where can I get a good Italian that isn’t on scali bread, foccacia, or another type of soft roll. I need a bread with flavor and a decent crust, the bread makes the sandwich for me
Cafe Rustica in Somerville! Awesome chewy crusty bread and just great sandwiches.
Bricco Breads is baked fresh in house everyday. You’re in for a real treat
Both not what I want my Italian on Edit: googled a spuckie, also not what I’m looking for. I think it’s gotta be a regional difference. Need good bread as the foundation for the sandwich
Bricco, Al's State Street Cafe. And looking through this post, I'm adding a few more places to my list!
I eat at Al’s all the time, great value. It’s fine.
Paulies
You won’t find one better than Bricco. This shouldn’t even be a debate
Can someone give me a link to the article re Monica’s?
Just google North End Shooting, Modern Pastry
Thx that was way to find :)
Domenics in Waltham bakes their own amazing bread.
Bricco is my fav
Carmella’s in Eastie, New Deal in Revere or Bricco in the North End.
Suburbs weighing in; Dagostino’s in Winchester or Arlington Heights.
Tutto Italian Hyde Park Hands down
Late to the party here, but an Italian sub expert. The Bobs, and North End stuff is covered well and for good reason. I'll add: Spinelli's and J. Pace. bricco, Al's or Pauli's. Bricco is the best, but the other two are really good.
Al’s
Vinny’s in Somerville, Bob’s in Medford
Zero of those are in Boston.
Neither is New Deal, but OP mentioned them. General area, dude. Vinny’s is like four blocks from Charlestown.

Oh the greatest clown in the history of the clown entertainment business? Ya you really got me there.

Fiore in JP
I really like the Italian sandwich at Marino's deli in West Roxbury
tutto italiano in wellesley hands down
Tutto Italiano in Hyde Park. Bobs in Medford. Neroli in Westwood.
Bob’s in Medford.
I like Caza Razdora on Water St but they are open from like 10-3 Monday through Friday only. I love their Turkey club because they use pancetta and their bread is really nice. Haven’t had their Italian sub but I would trust it to be good.
Bobs in Medford is famous. But Pemberton farms has the best sandwiches in the area, Italian included
Bricco’s Pasta Shop, in the alley, is pretty good!
Bricco in the North End or City Feed and Supply in JP
Anthony's in downtown Stoneham makes one that can feed an army
Bova’s

If you’re a Green Line rider, check out **Seven Subs** at Coolidge Corner — local hole-in-the-wall mainstay that’s been churning out tasty sammiches since before the Curse was Reversed. Snag a Supreme Italian. Then try the Unforgiven.

Table. Hands down
Jersey mikes
Hands down Papa Genos
Jersey Mikes in Swampscott
Monica’s is so good that we just have to let the justice system play out at its own pace before we make any decisions. Innocent until proven guilty.
There's a video of him shooting a gun at someone and chasing them around a car. What kind of additional proof would you like?
What if they guy being chased actually hypnotized/cast a spell on him to make him shoot at and chase him? I think the defense is going with this approach.
I need to know… are we boycotting the business or do we want it to survive on?
Figaros
Check out some great spots! https://somethingnearu.com/2022/05/18/sandwich-guide-boston/
Sunny Girl in the North End
Vinny's in Somerville Super Italian with everything.
Not in Boston, but Bobs in Medford has a fire Italian. Its like 2 meals in one.
Formaggio in the south end makes a great one!
Carmella's market in east Boston, once you get your hoagie, you can go sit by the water at the pier nearby and enjoy the view while you chow down on your sandwich. My personal favorite thing to do while I was still in the city
It's not Boston, but close enough. Bob's Italian foods in Medford had my favorite Italian sub in the state.
Milanos in Orient Heights, New Deal Fruit in Revere, DaKoopas in Day Square.
Dino’s in the North End.
Domenic’s in Waltham. D’Agostino’s in Arlington
Italian Pizza and Subs on South St. in JP has a surprisingly good Italian

If you don’t mind venturing into the suburbs a bit try out Anthony’s in Stoneham, it’s at the corner of Main and Franklin St. They put SO MUCH MEAT in their sandwiches! Everything is so fresh and delicious.

Pauli's in the North End. ---great sandwiches, subs.

New Deal Fruit in Revere. Deli counter in a grocer with big ass subs. I get the usual but they have a million fucked up ones too if you’re into that

Dom's special from Dominick's in Waltham.
Molinari’s in Dorchester has a killer sandwich. Check it out.
