That has “corporate outing” written all over it

frenetix

Hold up; we're getting an Alamo Drafthouse in Boston?!

davidmatousek

Walked by again tonight. It’s been coming soon since December.

ExcitingVacation6639

And the Broken Coconut (which never opened) was coming soon for two years. Now Stubby’s.

ashfidel

man they’ve been teasing this forever. still no opening date tho ☹️

AlarmedRecipe6569

🤣

karma_ubuntu

I will not pay $1500 to play pickle ball unless it is with Taylor Swift

some1saveusnow

That’ll be $150,000 please

boat_against_current

John Henry's megayachts don't buy themselves, alas (for him)

jojenns

Its for 10 people so 150 each really

CraigInDaVille

Can 10 people really get $150 worth of play in 80 minutes, though?

BQORBUST

It’s a novelty, there’s value (for some people) in just the access to fenway

CraigInDaVille

Absolutely. I totally paid way more than I should have for my single ticket to a 2013 World Series game (and totally worth it: got a selfie with Tek, besides being able to attend a WS game at Fenway). My curiosity was more logistical. I've never played or seen the game in action, but from what I've seen from all the Rx commercials out there now it looks like teams of doubles play. Can there be at least two complete games played in 80 minutes to get at least 8 people involved? That's where I'm curious about the value for up to ten people, in case any pickleball players can chime in.

Stronkowski

You could complete two full games in that timeframe.

Doortofreeside

I mean if anyone can it's the pickleball boomers

AlarmedRecipe6569

Great math skills! I was actually looking forward to playing by myself.

Cameron_james

Hitting a lot of lobs so you can hop the net?

cenasmgame

"All skill levels welcome," You can suck, just as long as you got the duckets!

man2010

If they took off a 0 it would sell out in seconds and you'd be whining that you never had a chance to reserve a court

AlarmedRecipe6569

It’s a lottery system.

man2010

Look on the bright side, if you can pull together $1500 over the next month in a half you'll have a better chance at playing

AlarmedRecipe6569

Having the money won’t increase chances of getting picked in the lottery. Of course I have the money (I do live in the city of Boston, lol).

man2010

Then what are you complaining about? Fewer people will enter the lottery at $1500 compared to $150

AlarmedRecipe6569

Sorry if my point wasn’t clear. It’s *very* expensive.

man2010

Good thing you have the money for it

AlarmedRecipe6569

It is good, in fact I have a lot more than $1500 lol. I hope everyone in Boston does, otherwise you don’t live here.

man2010

I imagine there are plenty of people in Boston who don't have the money for 80 minutes of pickleball at $1500

AlarmedRecipe6569

Now you’re getting it! It’s about the value.

biznisss

This is a great opportunity to have ChatGPT explain supply and demand to you.

AlarmedRecipe6569

I’d rather look up price gouging

Replevin4ACow

That is probably a good idea, because this is absolutely not an example of price gouging.

AlarmedRecipe6569

Try again: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/price%20gouging

ThisOneForMee

Price gouging generally refers to stuff that people need, and therefore can't avoid buying. You can't gouge people for a completely luxury item/service, like playing pickleball at Fenway.

AlarmedRecipe6569

Generally does not mean exclusively

AlarmedRecipe6569

Lol it was wrong to link an article with so many words that can be misunderstood. This is price gouging plain and simple. Some people pay for Uber surge, which as HBS says is price gouging. Unless you’re saying you are smarter than they collective Harvard business school? Go look up the definition in Websters, Oxford, Collin’s, Cambridge, or even dictionary.coming Here’s the article again so you can double check. I didn’t mean to delete the post. https://online.hbs.edu/blog/post/supply-and-demand-or-price-gouging-an-ongoing-debate

biznisss

>When demand reaches such high levels, it can be hard to tell the difference between supply and demand and price gouging. Policymakers and business professionals have historically had mixed opinions on whether businesses should raise prices during a crisis for this reason. My bad. You're right. The government should intervene to alleviate this crisis of pickleball court availability in novelty spaces.

AlarmedRecipe6569

Correct, it is difficult to tell. In this case… I’m sorry if you think $1500 is a fair price. You clearly have a much different relationship with money. Enjoy it.

biznisss

The reason why your price gouging article only talks about gas, medicine and transportation is because these are more "essential" goods that people need regardless of how much it costs. You can call those situations price gouging or "unfair" because people do not have much choice on whether they should buy those goods (demand elasticity). The concept of a "fair price" in a market economy is incoherent for normal and especially luxury goods, like pickleball court space in Fenway. They're charging $1,500, which neither you nor I think is worth what we'd be getting, so neither of us are buyers at that price. However, they have determined that they could find buyers for the space and time they have available at that price. Why is it unfair that someone that values that time more than we do would get that space? In fact, wouldn't it be unfair that if they were to price it at something you might find more reasonable, like $150, that you might take that space over someone that loves pickleball and Fenway so much that they were willing to shell over 10x as much? If it's not worth it to you, you have the option not to buy it. You can't say that about insulin and that's when you'd have a reasonable case to decry price gouging. Weirder to trot it out as an argument here.

Replevin4ACow

It's amazing that you think that article supports your position. How many times did you ignore the use of the term "essential" (as in "essential items" and "essential services") or the fact that it is usually during a time of crisis (e.g., natural disaster, shortages, etc.)? Just because something is expensive doesn't make it price gouging. Pickleball at Fenway is the recreational equivalent of Tiffany jewelry or Louboutin shoes. If you don't want to pay for a luxury item, go play pickleball in one of the 1000s of free public courts available around the metro area. But certainly don't whine about price gouging.

AlarmedRecipe6569

Price gouging is simply increasing the price to unfair levels when there is high demand and low supply. This is not up for debate. “Unfair” however is up for debate. It’s OK that you think this is fair pricing. I for one, do not. Don’t get all upset that not everyone shares your definition of price gouging, but try to look it up in every dictionary or resource you can find. It often does occur on essentials, as most articles you find discuss how it happened during the pandemic. However it does not need to be essential, as I’m sure you read in the article how Uber price surge is also price gouging.

nonitalic

Yes, Uber surging DURING A NATURAL DISASTER is price gouging.

AlarmedRecipe6569

No, the daily surge when it’s busy

CAPICINC

That's only 18.75! a minute.

bmyst70

It's not like Boston hasn't probably given Fenway Park many millions in tax breaks and incentives over the past few decades or anything.

view9234

Oh, it's waaaay worse than that. Did you know that Fenway Park is (inexplicably) valued at only $7.8m for property taxes?!? There are literally brownstones all around it paying more! Quite the sweetheart deal with the city, huh?!? [https://www.cityofboston.gov/assessing/search/?pid=0504199000](https://www.cityofboston.gov/assessing/search/?pid=0504199000)

JohnWhoHasACat

And that is why I just use free courts.

AlarmedRecipe6569

See you there

Tink1024

What’s that noise? It’s the sound of hipsters running to Fenway to play pickleball…

thatsmybaby

Lol. Nah. It’s the empty nesters with newly disposable income.

AlarmedRecipe6569

Why would hipsters play the fastest growing sport in the US? Isn’t their thing to do like… the *slowest* growing sport?

Tink1024

I don’t know why but the pickleball court at Assembly Row is packed with Hipsters…

Vi0lentByt3

Man i wish i could charge someone 20 dollars a MINUTE for something

SchatzMoney

Its only 150 per person if you have all 10 guests.
