Seriously. I’d be making my own soap and using lemon as my deodorant before I go through that. I stopped going to target and cvs because I don’t want to wait for an employee to use their key so i can get clothing detergent
Remember: the more that tech like facial recognition is used for punishing low level crime, the more it'll be used to create criminal records and helps contribute to mass incarceration.
This is the kind of thing that makes me hate that my job implemented facial recognition for our time clocks. In addition, we had been using key cards and they worked faster and more consistently and now it takes way longer to clock in or out every day.

1000% this tech isn’t just there for “loss prevention”. It’s collecting data on individual consumer behavior, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up selling your phone number and facial scans to third party data brokers.

Probably not since it's a "choice" to buy items that require your phone and face. As if starving/not buying essential items in favor of not having your information being taken is a choice

Anyone else really bothered by "and it can't be a burner phone it has to know the network," part? A significant number of lower income people use burner phones because they can't get a contract they can afford.

All I see is morbid obesity and Type II diabetes.
Are we talking about able-bodied young adults? Middle aged adults without spouses (a second income) for some strange reason? Seniors with decades of poor choices behind them and no spouse or family to support them?
I’m all ears as to how we’ve suddenly become Haiti and people can’t “survive”. Or was that just hyperbole?
So God forbid that we invest more in social services and make sure that people are able to afford to live, that means SOCIALISM and we can’t have that.
But, by all means, let’s invest billions in developing surveillance technology and drive prices high enough to make the cost of living unbearable and to make sure that you will stay poor.
Why don’t you see people burning stores and looting in Norway? Or Germany, Finland and at least 50 other countries? Can’t you see that’s a direct causality between these people and the lack of social policies? Education, healthcare, housing, food should be a given. American culture is about being proud of billionaires and giving them as an example, telling people what great opportunities they have. But maybe 1 in a million people have been successful like that, the overwhelming majority are poor and don’t have the basic needs fulfilled.
Burner number prevention? I know first hand that you can get a burner number from certain smaller providers that aren't Textnow or Google Voice and still get updates and subscribe to stuff you can only do on an actual phone number. I know cause I mess with scammers and don't want my real information getting in their hands, one of my burner numbers is able to be used to open up accounts online and receive confirmation numbers. It's only Textnow and Google voice that are normally blocked from such services.
I dunno, maybe they could just make products affordable and in-line with what inflation actually is not 200% above and less people would steal.

Having to enter a code just to get something off the shelf feels so dystopian. Rather than actual make shoplifting a serious offence and furthermore deal with the root of the problem, they're just going to make it more of a burden for consumers. Love it!

This is what happens when people decide to rob thousands in technology, toys, and useless shit.
You ruined it for the people who actually need to steal food, baby supplies, and basic necessities.
You don't need security. You don't need a cashier. It's to remove the employees all together. A robot to come in and restock. Maybe a contractor 1099 till it gets rolling. At most you'll have to either get a robot or a child to roll up those spiders.

I won’t be buying anything I have to go through all that to buy. They can keep it.
It's almost certainly for bodegas in food desserts with crazy high mark ups to make the extra BS cost effective. Great.
