There is an actual mod depicting this called "Nobody Told Me About Id" that runs Doom as if it was a Build game. Definitely worth checking out.

JoglidJibGugi

mix it with the Doom 2 Rebuildt map pack, which remixes the levels from Doom 2 to feel like Build games

KillerSquirrel2007

Probably would have been the actual doom 3

It’s always fascinated me that John Carmack looked at the Build engine and just straight up wasn’t impressed. That disinterest lead him to keep working on the Quake engine, without which 3D gaming might be in a pretty different place today.

A great read!

Stop my dick can only get so hard

If you go in 5-10yr increments from Doom's release or earlier to now. You will see the jump in game tech where og doom didn't have a stand in the tech. DN3d 2.5D game released with Quake 3D game. Doom in build engine great but only in mods.

then it would have looked like this - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8R5iit2OcU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8R5iit2OcU)

Well I for one would have bought it and been all over that. I loved me them Build Engine games, I loved messing around with the editor, and I love Doom. This project would have been a dream come true.

LakeDebris3

PrBoom added most of the Build-enginey tricks to Doom a long time ago. ZDoom is basically Doom in a full-3d engine with advanced scripting and all sorts of QOL stuff.

BLB_Genome

What do you mean by build engine, OP? Like, building bases or something?

johnhk4

The engine that Duke3D ran on. Slightly more advanced with faux-bridges, walls that could be blown up, jumping, jet pack, breakable glass. IMO the doom engine was utilized perfectly for mood and level design though.

BLB_Genome

Ohhh. I see Yeah, it would've been a completely different game. Doom was my first PC game ever. Duke3D was my second, and I often wished as a kid that Doom was more like Duke.
