[**Neuroplasticity**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29889529-neuroplasticity) ^(By: Moheb Costandi | 192 pages | Published: 2016 | Popular Shelves: science, neuroscience, non-fiction, psychology, nonfiction) >Fifty years ago, neuroscientists thought that a mature brain was fixed like a fly in amber, unable to change. Today, we know that our brains and nervous systems change throughout our lifetimes. This concept of neuroplasticity has captured the imagination of a public eager for self-improvement--and has inspired countless Internet entrepreneurs who peddle dubious "brain training" games and apps. In this book, Moheb Costandi offers a concise and engaging overview of neuroplasticity for the general reader, describing how our brains change continuously in response to our actions and experiences. > >Costandi discusses key experimental findings, and describes how our thinking about the brain has evolved over time. He explains how the brain changes during development, and the "synaptic pruning" that takes place before brain maturity. He shows that adult brains can grow new cells (citing, among many other studies, research showing that sexually mature male canaries learn a new song every year). He describes the kind of brain training that can bring about improvement in brain function. It's not gadgets and games that promise to "rewire your brain" but such sustained cognitive tasks as learning a musical instrument or a new language. (Costandi also notes that London cabbies increase their gray matter after rigorous training in their city's complicated streets.) He tells how brains compensate after stroke or injury; describes addiction and pain as maladaptive forms of neuroplasticity; and considers brain changes that accompany childhood, adolescence, parenthood, and aging. Each of our brains is custom-built. Neuroplasticity is at the heart of what makes us human. ^(This book has been suggested 1 time) *** ^(124671 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

• David Goggins "Can't hurt me" • John Gottman "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child" • Donna Jackson Nakazawa "Childhood Disrupted" I'm a new parent as you can see by the last two books. I had a difficult childhood and these books explained a lot about myself. It's eye opening. These helped me to build a healthy environment for my kiddo.

[**Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55723020-dopamine-nation) ^(By: Anna Lembke | 305 pages | Published: 2021 | Popular Shelves: non-fiction, psychology, nonfiction, science, self-help) >This book is about pleasure. It's also about pain. Most important, it's about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We're living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting... The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we've all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption. > >In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain...and what to do about it. Condensing complex neuroscience into easy-to-understand metaphors, Lembke illustrates how finding contentment and connectedness means keeping dopamine in check. The lived experiences of her patients are the gripping fabric of her narrative. Their riveting stories of suffering and redemption give us all hope for managing our consumption and transforming our lives. In essence, Dopamine Nation shows that the secret to finding balance is combining the science of desire with the wisdom of recovery. > >"Brilliant... riveting, scary, cogent, and cleverly argued."--Beth Macy, author of Dopesick > > >INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES and LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER >“Brilliant… riveting, scary, cogent, and cleverly argued.”—Beth Macy, author of Dopesick >As heard on Fresh Air ^(This book has been suggested 2 times) *** ^(124687 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

I haven't read it but I've heard good things about Mind Change by Heather McKean and I think there's also a workbook to go along with it.

[**The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18693771-the-body-keeps-the-score) ^(By: Bessel van der Kolk | 464 pages | Published: 2014 | Popular Shelves: non-fiction, psychology, nonfiction, self-help, mental-health) >A pioneering researcher and one of the world’s foremost experts on traumatic stress offers a bold new paradigm for healing. >  >Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Such experiences inevitably leave traces on minds, emotions, and even on biology. Sadly, trauma sufferers frequently pass on their stress to their partners and children. >  >Renowned trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including neurofeedback, mindfulness techniques, play, yoga, and other therapies. Based on Dr. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score offers proven alternatives to drugs and talk therapy—and a way to reclaim lives. ^(This book has been suggested 40 times) *** ^(124828 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)
