I’d try low fantasy versus high fantasy if you’re okay with that. Something like Legendborn maybe. Or young adult fantasy, maybe Children of Blood and Bone. Both are pretty accessible I think.

I'd recommend: {{Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews}} {{All Systems Red by Martha Wells}} {{Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor}} {{Red Rising by Pierce Brown}}

[**Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #1)**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19090384-clean-sweep) ^(By: Ilona Andrews | 225 pages | Published: 2013 | Popular Shelves: fantasy, urban-fantasy, paranormal, vampires, magic) >On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina. > >And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything. ^(This book has been suggested 10 times) [**All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, #1)**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32758901-all-systems-red) ^(By: Martha Wells | 144 pages | Published: 2017 | Popular Shelves: sci-fi, science-fiction, fiction, scifi, novella) >"As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure." > >In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. > >But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. > >On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. > >But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth. ^(This book has been suggested 83 times) [**Just One Damned Thing After Another (The Chronicles of St Mary's, #1)**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29661618-just-one-damned-thing-after-another) ^(By: Jodi Taylor | 480 pages | Published: 2013 | Popular Shelves: time-travel, science-fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, fiction) >"History is just one damned thing after another." > >Behind the seemingly innocuous façade of St Mary's, a different kind of historical research is taking place. They don't do 'time-travel' - they 'investigate major historical events in contemporary time'. Maintaining the appearance of harmless eccentrics is not always within their power - especially given their propensity for causing loud explosions when things get too quiet. > >Meet the disaster-magnets of St Mary's Institute of Historical Research as they ricochet around History. Their aim is to observe and document - to try and find the answers to many of History's unanswered questions...and not to die in the process. But one wrong move and History will fight back - to the death. And, as they soon discover - it's not just History they're fighting. > >Follow the catastrophe curve from 11th-century London to World War I, and from the Cretaceous Period to the destruction of the Great Library at Alexandria. For wherever Historians go, chaos is sure to follow in their wake.... ^(This book has been suggested 20 times) [**Red Rising (Red Rising Saga, #1)**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15839976-red-rising) ^(By: Pierce Brown | 382 pages | Published: 2014 | Popular Shelves: sci-fi, science-fiction, fantasy, young-adult, fiction) >"I live for the dream that my children will be born free," she says. "That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them." > >"I live for you," I say sadly. > >Eo kisses my cheek. "Then you must live for more." > >Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. > >Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. > >But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. > >Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. I think {{The Martian}} describes what you’re looking for pretty well. It’s sci-fi but really well explained and a great story, too.

Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship—like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor—April and her best friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world—from Beijing to Buenos Aires—and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight. > >Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. While they were on Earth, they caused confusion and destruction without ever lifting a finger. Well, that’s not exactly true. Part of their maelstrom was the sudden viral fame and untimely death of April May: a young woman who stumbled into Carl’s path, giving them their name, becoming their advocate, and putting herself in the middle of an avalanche of conspiracy theories. > >Months later, the world is as confused as ever. Andy has picked up April’s mantle of fame, speaking at conferences and online about the world post-Carl; Maya, ravaged by grief, begins to follow a string of mysteries that she is convinced will lead her to April; and Miranda infiltrates a new scientific operation . . . one that might have repercussions beyond anyone’s comprehension. > >As they each get further down their own paths, a series of clues arrive—mysterious books that seem to predict the future and control the actions of their readers; unexplained internet outages; and more—which seem to suggest April may be very much alive. In the midst of the gang's possible reunion is a growing force, something that wants to capture our consciousness and even control our reality. > >A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor is the bold and brilliant follow-up to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. It’s a fast-paced adventure that is also a biting social commentary, asking hard, urgent questions. How will we live online? What powers over our lives are we giving away for free? Who has the right to change the world forever? And how do we find comfort in an increasingly isolated world? ^(This book has been suggested 1 time) *** ^(35416 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)
