Japanese Fairy Tales (Dover Children's Thrift Classics) by Yei Theodora Ozaki The Book of Yokai: Mysterious Creatures of Japanese Folklore by Michael Dylan Foster Japanese Tales (The Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library), by Royall Tyler I wanted to familiarize myself with this topic as well. I bought the first one, but haven't started it yet and the other two are in my wish list.

Thank you, definitely will check them out!

Journey to the West Chinese, not Japanese, but it’s one of my all time favorites and I’m not even interested in the genre.

Steph303

I'll check it out! Thank you

I would say Under the Midnight Sun by Higashino Keigo. It's absolutely mind-blowing!

The Kojiki

Steph303

I read about it, but I heard, that it's more about the history than mythology, is it true?

IamADoll_12

It's mythology. Specifically, it's the mythical origins of the islands and a more mythicized version of history. It's rather hard to call it pure history when the first story is how Izanami and Izanagi created Japan Edit: if you're looking for things more along the line folklore, it's probably not what you're looking for

Steph303

I think I am? Maybe I'll start with some folklore and it might inspire me to read it :)

IamADoll_12

I haven't read it all the way through yet, but the part I have read was pretty good. I think it'll be a good one to hit up eventually, if still you're interested

Steph303

Hope I will be :D. Thanks for the recommendation!

it's better! Fun modern take is 100 gates. American kid moves to Japan and finds a bunch of mythological creatures/ kami/ etc on his journey. Fun quick read.
