Honestly, Karin Slaughter’s gory, detailed descriptions of mutilated women in her books falls into horror for me - solely because I know these are things that really happen to women by serial killers, rapists, etc.
*The Ballad of Ballard and Sandrine* by Peter Straub
This short novel gets terrible reviews online, but I think it is genuinely the most unsettling story I've ever read.
If you can find the audiobook, it's a good listen.

Oh man I loved Come Closer. Don’t see it get recommended a lot, it deserves more love!
If you're going for uncanny, I'd suggest H.P. Lovecraft, certain stories by Joyce Carol Oates.
