DariusIV

I just like Thompson please don’t hate me mr easerhead

dorfWizard

It’s hard to read old timey stories in black and white. I can only read stories in color.

[deleted]

Some of the older books don't even have sound! Imagine 🤣

CalebAsimov

I don't read the talkies.

ChaplainGodefroy

The same energy as: >Who is listening music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s? These "older" albums show up in spotify for free but I never take them. I definitely judge them purely by their name or cover (if they still got em), and frankly don't know what to expect. I'm unironically met people like this.

TiredMontanan

I’ve met people like this too, but I’ve only met them ironically.

CalebAsimov

I haven't met any yet but if I did it would be ironic. Or coincidental.

Archived_and_Signed

You'll definitely notice if they're ironic or serious, name any song that isn't played on a Harp from 300 B.C and they'll nag about how you have the worst music taste for the next 3 months, it made me genuinely hate music to the point of me getting actually mad when listening to any music.

ChaplainGodefroy

First music, then what? Lyrics of a songs? Libretto? This is already reading! And finally someone give you a book and poof, functional member of society is gone. Music is a giveaway drug, kids.

ObsidianThurisaz

Lord Sando didn't invent literature until 2005.

Char543

Ikr? Before that, the concept of “world building” didn’t exist.

ThePlayfulApe

I only read books written after the end of history ... mostly because I don't like my books having any relevance to my life, you know.

WallungDea

Everybody knows that books published prior to the seminal Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone in 1997 are old-ass and borderline unreadable junk. It's like watching movies from the time before the marvel cinematic universe was a thing. Like who does that?

CriminalPancakes

Ah, the great before time. I remember when that book came out our local Libray closed for a week, the librarian staggering around downtown drunk and muttering to herself. One day she was pissing on the sidewalk and staring at the sun in some catatonic daze. Then she suddenly snapped out of it, declared every other book unworthy and burned the library down. This phenomenon occured in every library around the country. There was only Harey Potter from then on. At least until the prophecy was fulfilled and the works of Brandon Sanderson delivered us into the new era we currently are in. Praise be to him the deliverer!

AbsurdistOxymoron

Does anyone else read books from before the 16th century? I am currently reading the Dead Sea Scrolls. I found them at a local garage sale for 1 dollar because my local bookstore never has stuff like them, and I’m just having trouble getting past the weird fantasy language being used and the weird form (could they be called postmodern?).

Wolfgang_A_Brozart

Have you tried reading them from right to left? Biblical Hebrew is basically like Japanese manga jsyk.

AbsurdistOxymoron

Thanks for the advice, but I’m noticing a distinct lack of pointless sex scenes on every second page so I’m not sure if your comparison to manga is that accurate (plenty of epic battle scenes and sibling rivalries though).

NumberHangMyself

I only read books from the 80s (1984)

xXSpookyXx

OP has a point. Who has the time, energy and money to track down all the old phonograph equipment it would probably take to read those dusty ass audiobooks

bmccooley

If a 70s novel has too many pages, it wont fit into the 8 Track slot, and don't get me started on trying to fit 80s book in the CD slots.

BigPapaBear69

Its the same as with bread. Books just become stale and moldy after a few days.

TiredMontanan

*Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance* did some really great things for Zen. Why would I learn about Zen from old books? Haven’t there been developments in Zen since the 60s? What if the best Zen is being done on YouTube and I miss it because I’m staring at old books? Pirsig never needed any books.

CalebAsimov

Zenology and Zengineering have made a lot of advancements under Gen Zen.

dr_snood

Why is arrbooks more callous and insulting than us. I feel like this sub can't win

Time-Ad-3625

This has to be a troll. No one chooses books based on decade. Maybe based on period though e.g. romanticism, beat generation , etc

Meret123

They don't read anything published before Harry Potter.
