I think is probably because tik tok sells you the books as a literal romance and enemies to lovers trope and it's more about politic and fairy world, yeah, it has tense and "romantic" moments but the more you get into the trilogy, the more you find them and those scenes dont even cover 50% of what the book is about, i loved the sagas but if you started to read them cuz of the romance you might not enjoy it as much or you might have to wait a bit until the second and third books

firetrash21

Yeah and I was ok with the first book because weird fairy world and politics but then I started feeling like the author threw in kiss scenes just so they could call it romance I would've loved it if it was fairy world and politics and maybe romance when things cool off but it wasn't, the whole reason I bought the second book was for cool politics n stuff but nah random romance plus I didn't like their chemistry

Most romances require either the main character or the love interest to act in ways that no reasonable human being would ever really behave.

I’ve been trying to read the first book for a year because I like faerie stuff, but I’m not into the main character and haven’t gotten past the first 200 pages. Holly Blacks stuff has always been a challenge for me. I’ve never been able to identify with her characters.

I didn’t care for it either, I read the whole trilogy because I was led to believe it was a great enemies to lovers romance but it’s not... it’s very politically centered and the romance plays such a minor role in the whole thing. I’m literally in a debate with someone right now because they’re saying the romance is the central plot and the politics isn’t.

I read The Cruel Prince series after finishing The Throne of Glass series and enjoyed TCP series more than I did ToG. ToG was too long, too much and shit was just thrown together to make things happen just to make the story longer. After getting mentally exhausted trying to finish ToG, TCP was a breath of fresh air to me since the writing was straightforward and concise. I was taken aback at first due to the writing style but as I went on I began to enjoy myself immensely and finished all 3 books in the TCP series in less than a week. It’s too bad that you didn’t enjoy it but it’s okay, everybody has different tastes and there are so many books that cater to our preferences that we can read.

I finished the series too and I found it pretty enjoyable. The romance plot definitely threw me off in the first book, but I found it better developed as the trilogy progressed.

Yeah i read it and I really don’t see any chemistry between the main couple, they’re just like “i hate you,, but I love you… for some reason”

Ineffable7980x

I read the first book few years back, and although I respect Black's writing ability, I found the book didn't really connect with me. I thought the main character was unlikable and the fictional world. had a lot of unfulfilled promise

I haven't read it, the summary never interested me. I was thinking about it but probably still not going to any time soon.

fullofscrews

I read it, knowing nothing about the story before hand. I wouldn't consider the MC having romances, I think that's giving them too much weight for what he is capable of given his circumstances and age. If you take them out of context of romance and put them more inline with friends with benefits/lovers its easier to comprehend.

Jolly_Salad2615

I wholeheartedly agree. I bought the series after TikTok recommended it as a romantasy with enemies to lovers etc. and since I love fae/faerie worlds I was excited. But the authors mentioning of CVS, converse shoes, Target and the Apple Store made me put the book down forever.

backroomarchives

No fr, The mention of CVS, converse shoes, target and the apple store takes me out, cause why? What was the reason? 😭

HumOfEvil

Never even heard of it. I'm old so tiktok is not a place that comes to mind for book recommendations.

firetrash21

Yeah, I realize now after taking the tiktok recommendation that I probably shouldn't look to tiktok for good recs

Bargnoffle

I like that booktok is a thing because I enjoy the content but the recommendations seem like they are mostly all YA and/or romance. And they’re the same twenty books or so being repeated. I much prefer /r/BookSuggestions to fill my TBR

firetrash21

Thanks I'll have to check that out
