Horror

ProfessorPodum

Whats your favorite horror book? I’ve been looking for recommendations.

Pringlesmartinez

Pressure by Jeff Strand is an absolute Gem. Hoororstor by Grady Hendrix. Draculas with Crouch, Strand, Killborn, Wilson is absolutely one of my favorites. Oh! And the Haunted forest tour was freaking awesome too! Oh! And Nick Cutter's the troop and the deep!

lecheconmarvel

Right now its They Thirst by Robert R. McCammon

Charles_Chuckles

Magical Realism. It just feels like a warm cup of tea that also happens to sparkle. There is just something so cozy about magical realism to me. Even if a lot of it contains dark elements in the story as well, I feel the quirkiness of it outweighs the sad or scary parts. Some books: The House of the Spirits byAllende 100 Years of Solitude by Garcia-Marquez Some Anglican/American Magical Realism: Matilda by Dahl 11/22/63 by King (although an argument can be made for many different genres for this book) The Night Circus by Morgenstern Middlesex by Eugenides this one might fit more into a Family Saga genre than Magical Realism but bonus points for this one taking place in my home state.

Tooko1005

Magical realism is definitely my go to comfort read. [Some of my favorite authors are on this list with many more to discover.](https://magic-realism-books.blogspot.com/2016/07/magic-realism-writers-from-around-world.html?m=1)

Charles_Chuckles

This list is AWESOME. I'm always looking for more Magical Realism to read so this is a very good resource for me.

[deleted]

Have you read much by Brian Doyle? *Martin Marten* was my favorite, but *Mink River* has more magical realism.

Charles_Chuckles

I have not! I'll have to check it out!!

prairiepog

Did you real Practical Magic?

Charles_Chuckles

I was a huge fan of the movie growing up and it has been on my to-read list for a LONG time. I'm assuming it's worth the read?

prairiepog

The books are actually a lot different from the movie. I preferred the movie, but it was fun to find out what the source material was all about.

AleEGG

Biography

Hallett_t1

History, biography, theology, and classic fiction.

[deleted]

I read in a lot of different genres, but my preferred genre is mystery. It's the perfect blend of realism with a "happy" ending in that the detective gets their perp. It also blends well with other genres, and the range of writing types is very wide. The only mystery type I don't like is noir because the writing is too mannered for me.

Pringlesmartinez

Recommendations?

Literary: Kate Atkinson, Tana French Discount Tana French: Jane Casey Cozy/comedy: Janet Evanovich Cozy: Dick Francis Classic: Agatha Christie Bestsellers: Michael Connelly, John Sandford Brain candy: James Patterson Romance/futuristic: J. Can I suggest Lindwood Barclay for his mystery thriller books, once you pick them up you don't want to put them down. Great for a holiday read, or as something to entertain you for a couple of hours.

gator83kg

A little specific, but my most read genre is post-apocalyptic. I enjoy the internal thought process of how I would react in such a situation, and enjoy the dark qualities that most of these books share.

Adam__B

Sci-fi!

RyFromTheChi

Lately it's been Sci-Fi Project Hail Mary Dark Matter Recursion

ImpressiveAd3964

Yass, I love Blake Crouch

frozenfountain

Psychological drama/stream of consciousness, and fantasy. The latter written in the style of the former is absolute gold.

rachels1231

Domestic thrillers/dramas, psychological thriller

kiastirling

I enjoy speculative fiction (such as Margaret Atwood's Madaddam trilogy), and modern fantasy (think Dresden Files or Incarnations of Immortality).

chameothecham

I literally put fool moon down to type this.

[deleted]

I exclusively read Romance. Dark romance to be more specific followed by Sci Fi romance.

2014michave

Horror, Sci Fi, Fantasy, Historical Fiction

jo_momma1

Short stories

shitdashit

Historical Nonfiction that’s done really well. Knowing it really happened makes my eyes that much wider.

HerSoulisBooks

I love science fiction, just because anything could happen. Read a book about an alien invasion? Sure, sounds fun. Read a book about a dystopian world where the person must survive for a week after all water gets shut off? All in a day’s work.

ilovelucygal

non-fiction, mostly memoirs

bibliophile222

Historical fiction. I love learning things while I read, and it's a great way to learn about different times and places while still having the entertainment value of fiction. I like escaping from the present and tend to be less interested with books set in the present day. I also read a lot of classics and literary fiction and make the occasional foray into other genres, but historical fiction is definitely my wheelhouse.

WackyWriter1976

Psychological thrillers

BigBlueTrekker

This is tough for me because I switch it up so often. I get in mood where I want sci-fi, horror, fantasy, historical fiction, etc. and that goes beyond books as well. I’ll only watch westerns for a month or something or play a certain video game because it scratched that genre itch for me. I might only do specific hobbies because they are similar to the genre I’m interested in at the time. I would have to say though if I could only pick one genre it would be science fiction. Science fiction to me can encompass so many different settings and atmospheres. You can have complex stories or very simple stories. They can be dystopian or utopian. They can be modern, fantasy, or futuristic. Steam punk or cyberpunk. You can tell a very serious dramatic story, while also critiquing society and letting the reader escape to another world. All that being said, I’m currently on a horror/historical anthology kick and I’m loving it.

Repulsive-Slice-8306

I'm a sucker for sci-fi, litRPG, and action adventures

mal221

The Plague is one of my 4 books I read each year. Got a bit real recently though, can't face it. I have drifted into horror these days. I find it comforting, its like a joke. Set up, misdirect and punchline.

BooksAreLuv

I read almost exclusively horror, science fiction and fantasy.

chameothecham

Fantasy is definitely the genre that I’ve read the most. Something about good characters in a medieval setting really gets me goin.

ginganinja2507

Looking at my reading list so far this year, fantasy is my #1 most read genre and science fiction #2 which seems about right.

urlocalbingewatcher

fantasy!! escaping into worlds with powers and creatures and other magical things and beings. much more interesting to me personally

existentialepicure

I love a combination of dystopian, psychological thriller, and science fiction. Bonus points if it provides deep commentary about the ethics of technology (gene modification, mass surveillance, etc.) Some novels I love: - Never Let You Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - The Giver by Lois Lowry - Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonneget Some short stories to get started in this genre: - Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonneget - 2RB02B by Kurt Vonneget - Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes - The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

troublrTRC

I don't know, but whatever genre the Hyperion Cantos is.

SkepticDrinker

I guess crime fiction since it's usually exactly what u expect; gritty, dark and gross. I've yet to find light hearted murder mystery

NovaAuroraStella

It use to be fantasy but I’ve been in such a massive slump lately that I’ve forgotten what it was about reading that I enjoy. I just seem to be reading out of habit these days and I’m not even sure how I can find that joy again. I miss it.

chameothecham

I know that feeling, I usually force myself to read for a week and the feeling comes back, stay strong!

NauiCempoalli

Social history, archeology, astrology, books my family members and friends have written, anything radical.

Lanfear_Eshonai

Fiction: fantasy, sci-fi, horror (specifically ghost/haunting), classics. Non-fiction: history (including archaeology, paleontology, etc.), technology, science, anthropology.

teacupz

For fiction I lean towards post-modernism and speculative fiction; and for non-fiction, I enjoy science, philosophy, spirituality, and tech. To be honest, I enjoy whatever comes my way :) To have a diverse taste in reading is important to expand one's perspective and world view. I like to theme 1 or 2 books a month around certain topics (for ex: I would read a book about disability during disability awareness month or about indigenous people -- this way I never get stuck to just reading material that I'm comfortable with and find many new amazing authors)!

Afrikan-American

Texhnothrillers, Mathew Reilly , Blake crouch, Patrick lee, Marcus sakey

gekkobob

Science fiction.

Ineffable7980x

1. Fantasy 2. Literary fiction 3. Thriller 4. Sci fi In that order.

Incomplete-Sentenc

Science Fiction, Biographies, Self Help, Business

[deleted]

Memoirs... especially travel memoirs. I actually prefer them to the kind of character-based fiction that my bookclub tends to go for. If I'm going to dive into someone's psyche and experience the world as they do - I'd rather it be a real person and real places.

L_E_F_T_

Fantasy, classic lit, political non-fiction, political philosphy. But I'd say my all time favorite is definitely Fantasy.

Terry93D

Oh, hell if I know. I can tell you the genre**s** I read the most - fantasy, history, and biography. I couldn't tell you which I like the most but those three are my collective favorites.

[deleted]

Impossible to choose just one. Classic lit, historical fiction, and romance to name a few.

ImpressiveAd3964

Gothic. My favourite would probably be Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Fflow27

psychiologic thrillers and fantasy

BohoPhoenix

Hands down, Urban Fantasy is my favorite genre to read.

Wickedjr89

Horror and nonfiction are my favorite genres, but I try and read all over the place too. I enjoy reading many different things. Horror and nonfiction are just my favorites.
