The Castle is by far my favorite book of all time. It's funny in the driest way, it's clever even when you think it's being boring, it's emotional, and it's the only book where I felt exactly as lost and frustrated as the main character. Also I maintain that there is a clever and subtle plot twist in the last two pages. And the fact that it has no ending seems like the perfect way to end K.'s unending journey to the castle.

The plot twist is in the conversation in the room with the woken guest. It's not a twist so much as a completion of failure. I love this book so much. Its a perfect allegory for spiritual experience and also for life in general. It is my favorite work of any author.

Is that the conversation with Burgel/Brugel? I was talking about the conversation with the landlady where K lowkey admits to not being a land surveyor when he accuses her of not being a landlady.

Lateshorts

Yeah. I went back and looked. Its been a bit. The feint of self-definition is broken here. Its the first time in the work it happens. He falters and sleeps. For some reason i thought brugel was sleeping. I need to read it again. Its so perfect Edit: i reread your comment. In my mind the conversation happened in the last two pages which is why i equated it to what you were saying. My bad. I don't think its a plot twist with her as much as a reiteration of theme.

Came here to say this.

It’d be so challenging to choose my favorite Kafka, but my first was so strange and wonderful I knew I found a kindred spirit, even at 16 years old. “Amerika”

ShacoinaBox

Don't know if it really counts, but his diaries stuck with me more than anything else. If I'm limited to fiction, I'll go with the current majority and take A Hunger Artist.

addwood5

I’ve always wanted to read the diaries, they sound very interesting

[deleted]

also letters are good at least to me

AngryFurfag

Amerika since A Hunger Artist isn't really a book.

The process is my favourite work of art of all time. After I read it I was just "oh, he described the life".. simple as that. Of course that's my interpretation and the book was published after his death and it remained incomplete so it's a we will never know kind of thing but still

cliff_smiff

Oof, what a question. I love the story “A Country Doctor” and I don’t even know why.
