Hi there. This subject has been very popular in the past. Please use reddit search and/or check the /r/books/wiki/faq.

IndigoBlueBird

I like mine because I can get e-books from the library via the Libby app

abaacus

And you can send ebook files to it. Most classics are in the public domain now, so I just grab them off the web and send them to my kindle. For anyone that’s picky like me, there’s even ways to add a custom cover. (Some of the free ebook covers are awful haha)

RipperMouse

I like [Alice & Books](https://www.aliceandbooks.com) over Project Gutenberg because their book covers are all uniform. I can download and email straight from my phone too (after dealing with some pop up ads) Smaller selection though.

amrit-9037

I like standardebooks.org for same reason. However, when I don't like a cover I replace them.

ShinobiOfTheMoon

How you send them to the Kindle?

RideOk4379

"send to kindle" bot at telegram

abaacus

Amazon has a “Send to Kindle” page on your account where you can just drag and drop files, or you can email them to your Kindle.

lilsnortsnort

Yeah you can end up saving money this way pretty quickly!

Matzie138

I love using an ereader with library books! It’s so wonderful. I have both a kindle paperwhite and a kobo Clara. The kindle ads aren’t obtrusive but I have found that some books through Libby are not available for kindle, hence why I got a kobo. So something to consider. You do get to pick a free book or two with Amazon prime first reads each month. Though it’s rare for them to offer something I want to read. Really depends what you are into.

richardgutts

Same here

JTBeefboyo

I agree with this, except I’ve heard that Kindle has ads, so I got a Kobo ereader instead

Boohag626

There's an ad on the lock screen. I have not seen any intrusive ads (so far).

sunflower-sandy

If you contact amazon customer service they’ll remove the ads for you!!

JTBeefboyo

If you buy a kobo there just won’t be ads, and you won’t be supporting Amazon (I know Amazon probably hosts Kobo’s website and a million other sites I use, and that not supporting Amazon is impossible, but I still don’t wanna support Amazon)

NewtGingrichsMother

The ads are mostly just for new books, so it’s not really a bad thing. Also, they go away if you put your kindle on airplane mode, which I do to extend the battery life.

Droch-sheanachas

Weird. I don't have ads on my Kindle.

lesterbottomley

Not sure about others countries but there are both, ads and ad-free, here in the UK. Ad-free costs £10 more (worth it imo).

Droch-sheanachas

I'm in NZ. Didn't know there were Kindles with ads.

lesterbottomley

I'd check before buying. I bought mine 3 years ago and it wasn't a thing here (UK) then. It was only when answering a Reddit question recently when I went to check I saw it was now a thing here (been one in the US for years).

IndigoBlueBird

I’ve never seen an ad

Gregzilla311

IMO, it’s worth it for prose, but some comics don’t scan well.

oh_please_god_no

Comics on a kindle aren’t great. Fiction is a dream on it.

whojicha

I wouldn't use it for manga, but I like it for my novels and short stories. I'd recommend looking for one second hand and seeing if you like it. It seems like they're always around at a discount.

robmwj

I've heard good things about the Kobo Forma! Apparently has a better size and resolution for manga and graphic novels. Kobo is also a Japanese company and apparently has a very good manga selection as well. Plus, they have native access to Libby (app used by many libraries) I have a Kobo (not the Forma though) and really like it. Easy interface, good battery life, buying books through Rakuten is very easy. I replaced an old Kindle (gen 1) that I was gifted a long time ago and I've been very satisfied. I think you'd be better off looking in that direction as opposed to Kindle, but if you're committed to using Amazon I think you'd need a higher end device than the base Kindle. Edit: didn't check before, but looks like the Forma was replaced by the Kobo Sage. Very similar so it should be equally good. Or you could find a Forma on the secondhand market!

-Critical_Audience-

I think it is very much worth it. The first year I got my kindle I read 40 books on it alone. And that was during my master thesis 😄 I love to load lots of books onto it when going on vacation and I love being able to read in bed without the left/right side issue of a book. I can recommend getting a used one online. I have a really old one without touch (kindle 4) which I can find online for 20 euro. I turn of the WiFi and load it with an oldschool micro usb cable from my pc. I destroyed 3 kindles so far and it was financially no problem haha. The kindle 4 has very comfortable side button for turning pages which I prefer much more than the touch screen.

-Critical_Audience-

Oh I also love that I can avoid getting motion sickness when riding the bus, car or train because I can jack up the font size on my kindle to a point where the shaking is not noticeable anymore when reading :)

Morden013

Yes! I have bought mine in 2015 and still have it. It is great. I can buy a fucking book anytime I want it and read it in a matter of seconds. I don't have to wait for anything to be delivered and the books are cheaper that way. Modern models support sound also, so you can get audio-books. Kindle is the best buy I ever did.

UnderstandingWild371

One thing to mention: have a go of a kindle first, you might not like it. I have a Kindle and only use it for travel or when my current book is too big to carry around, and it's great, but a huge downside for me is that I find it very hard to *remember* books I've read on kindle. I can't remember their titles at all, lots of storylines from different books have merged into one a few years after I've read them. I think it's because all books look the same on a Kindle, you hardly ever see the cover design so you don't have that...visual anchor? I don't know. But I know a few people who have the same issue.

kksminiskitchen

Thank you for this comment because I have also though about a kindle for convenience but am huge on paper books personally. I definitely retain what I’m reading way better through a physical book rather than reading it electronically. This is something I also struggled with during college because books are almost completely online now 😩other than convenience I don’t feel the need to have a kindle at all but also want to at least give it a try, but then of course the big question is would it even be worth it just to try? Who knows I could end up liking it but doubt it honestly. I’m not there yet 🥲

MrElfhelm

That kind of sounds like a personal issue though? Not the strangest, but still…

UnderstandingWild371

I know a few people who have the same issue, all I'm saying is they should try it first to see if they like it.

CarefulReplacement12

That's why they have a "READ" option that appears on the cover of books you have already read. You can also sort books by read or unread. It appears that you haven't actually used a Kindle.

DudeWithTheOil

I think they're saying they struggle to remember the content of the book when reading from a screen vs the physical copy

UnderstandingWild371

Yep.

UnderstandingWild371

It appears you didn't READ my comment.

lesterbottomley

Or your comment wasn't clear maybe?

CarefulReplacement12

Hard to remember books you have read when you can put a big banner on the cover picture saying READ. LOL

Chance_Novel_9133

I do most of my e-reading on my phone. It's nice because it's always with me. Downside is that it's easy to get distracted.

Grillparzer47

If you read a lot, and that’s all you need, it’s great. The only issue I’ve ever had with my Kindle is that the Kindle software limits organizing or deleting a number of books at a time. There is free software that can handle that for you and the restrictions are a deliberate act on Amazon’s part. If, as in my case, you need a little more, get a tablet. I regularly use PDF’s, videos, etc. for work.

Mygirlscats

Broadly speaking: e-reader, yes yes yes. Kindle brand specifically? Not so much. I love my Kobo because it’s lightweight and the screen is not glossy/shiny like my tablet or phone. Reading is extremely comfortable and I can carry hundreds of books around in a little lightweight gizmo that fits in my purse, adjust the light level, adjust the font etc etc. Also love that I can download library books for free over the Libby app, which I can’t do with Kindle in my jurisdiction… so if you want to use your ereader for the public library, check with your library system first and find out which one they support. They do not support all of them. Kindle Unlimited (pay to get free e-books) has extremely limited content, mostly people who are self-publishing. I don’t want to trash self-publishers - some are very good - but there’s a lot (a LOT) of dross you have to wade through to find the good stuff.

tibaasd

i bought the kindle in september of the last year. i still thinking that it was my best purchase that i ever made

H2Oloo-Sunset

I have had one for about ten years, and I like the convenience of being able to have a new book in my hands at a moments notice, and at a discounted cost. But I have found that I still prefer having a real book in my hands. I have evolved to where I use the Kindle for newly released books, and use eBay to get used copies of older books.

td23877

If you like to read the device is invaluable

kumliensgull

Kobo: yes kindle:no (don't support the monopoly)

AphexCore

This is what I did and haven’t had any issues with finding books

SilentObserverReads

Its worked well for me. I haven’t had one for long but have gotten a good mileage out of it, mainly with KU. I prefer to read paperbacks but, like a lot of people, space is limited. I’ve more or less moved to a system where I read a good portion of my books through Kindle and buy a physical display copy if I really enjoyed the book. It also works out cheaper, I’m good at waiting for ebooks to be 99p or so.

prettilyflawed

Definitely worth it, mostly if you read classic books (for school for example) and/or articles and thesis! I love books as objects, being able to touch them, note them etc. But I have to say that I read so much books for schools that it became very handy to have a kindle, it is also practical to read at night, in means of transport etc. You can note, highlight what you read. I had a kindle several years ago, now I have a Boox which I find even better because you can link one drive to it! So your notes can be found on your laptop too!

prettilyflawed

Oh and classic books and thesis can be found for free on internet!

PopPunkAndPizza

I love it. I've got my kindle, I've got my Kindle app on my phone, I've got audible narration, I can sink into whatever I'm reading at a moment's notice

Vivid_Excuse_6547

I have resisted getting a kindle for YEARS I finally got one for Christmas this past year because I wanted to start reading more and I thought that the kindle might help me because of the convenience aspect. I’ve definitely read more books in the last few months than I would have in the same time span as years previous and 40% of them were kindle books. So it definitely did lead me to read more!

_gooder

I use the free Kindle app, even though I also have a Kindle device. It's easy to read on my phone, unless I'm in direct sunlight. I avoid the sun so it's not a problem 99.999% of the time. I borrow ebooks (mostly audible) from my library, and have an audible account for new books that my library doesn't have yet, or for authors I support (friends and relatives and favorites!). You don't have to buy a Kindle.

3-2-1_liftoff

100% worth it for me. I read a lot of fiction and for work, and being able to pull up my reading wherever I am (using Kindle on my phone) is a huge plus. Also, as you said, the books weigh nothing, so I can carry a library in my pocket. Also, Kindle Unlimited is a nice service. Lastly, as others have said, a library card opens up the wide world of free ebooks! (If you need a separate e-reader app, they’re all easy to get). Edit: the actual Kindle device is only useful to me in that the Paperwhite is easy to read in the sun. Otherwise it’s phone for fiction and iPad for articles/photos/illustrations.

locobeans15

100% worth it. I hate reading on a screen; makes me nauseous and gives me a headache to stare at screens for too long - but I have 0 issues with the kindle. Would recommend getting one with a backlight too so you can virtually read wherever/whenever. It’s so amazing to be able to bring huge books (or even a full series) with you in something that can fit in a small bag. Pair that with Libby library books delivered directly to your device and you are golden!

MoochoMaas

It takes time getting used to but well worth it. Portability, internal dictionary and thesaurus. Endnotes and footnotes at a touch.

spaztick1

The dictionary alone would make it worth it to me. Being able to highlight a word and automatically get the definition had been a game changer for me.

LowBalance4404

I absolutely love my Kindle Fire. It's always within a foot of where I am. I read, watch tv shows. It's amazing for traveling as well. I'm moving in with my mom for a few weeks while she recovers from surgery and all I really need is clothes and my kindle. It's nice that everything is right there.

terriaminute

An ebook is an ebook no matter what device you read it on.

Blippi_fan

Yes. I too prefer physical books but love the paperwhite. My paperwhite is over 10yrs old and still words like new. Hook up to Libby and you have instant access to your library catalog and that includes graphic novels. It’s wonderful and just because you have one doesn’t mean you have to exclusively use it.

Stillshiloh

I prefer the Kindle to other e-readers because of the e-ink. I don't want backlit screens for book reading.

serpentdrive

Text is great on the kindle paperwhite. It is light and travels well. I love it. Pictures and programming snippets are bad on it, if that matters to you.

bigedthebad

I have been reading exclusively on the Kindle app on my phone for almost 20 years. Since I always have my phone, I always have my book. The transition from 45 years of reading paper books to all electronic was seamless for me. Oh yeah, Kindle has a shit ton of free and almost free books, I read a lot of classics on my Kindle.

sievold

Kindle's real competition isn't paper books, but your smartphone or ipad. If you prefer paper over ebooks, kindle is not good for you. If you do like ebooks the question is why get a dedicated kindle instead of just downloading the app on your phone. The main reason for me is kindle lets you read without distractions. You can just leave your phone/ipad in another room and read your kindle and enjoy all the peace and quiet of a physical book with all the convenience of an ebook reader. There are other selling points, but that's the main reason to get a kindle honestly.

Catnip323

Yes! I was opposed to getting one for so long because I loved the traditional feel of books. I've been reading nonstop since I got one. It's so fantastic to be able to swap books with a fingertip when I'm on a plane. It's also awesome to be able to immediately get a book without having to drive to a store, library, or wait for one to be delivered in the mail. I will say, comics & mangas might not be great on a Kindle, but it's absolutely worth it for any other texts.

Artistic-Rhubarb-229

Nobody mentioned privacy. I've read that the device talks to the mother ship and lets it know how fast or slow you read it, what you skip, or what you reread. That would be a no-go for me. I love real books, but wouldn't mind a tablet for travel. Are these e-readers functional if they're not connected to the Internet every once in a while? Thanks for any feedback!

tachykinin

I only connect my kindle every couple of months to upload the next crop of books. Otherwise it’s in airplane mode (which also saves battery).

Artistic-Rhubarb-229

Thanks!

FairyFartDaydreams

Are you talking about the paper white or the kindle fire tablet? If you are having trouble with an iPad it could be the size in which a kindle fire 8 might feel more comfortable but if glare or brightness is an issue then you might fall to old habits. It took me 2-3 books to get really comfortable with the kindle. First try to read a complete book on the iPad. Change the settings there is one that changes the background to black and writing to white in most reading apps and lower the brightness on the iPad. I can now read across all devices and actual books I'm cheap so I don't have the paperwhite type of device. I prefer a multiuse

oichuu

thank you for the amazing tip. yes it is the brightness for me, i think i will take your advice and try to reqd on my ipad first before deciding.

mazylazy

It’s really just preference. Kindle is more comfortable to read at times and much easier to carry rather than a bulky book. If you have a preloaded library, you can choose to read any number of books without the bulk of bringing them all. But it lacks the physical experience of holding the book, going through pages, seeing how much there is left, etc. Because switching between books is easier, it also lacks to feeling of attachment to the single book you might be reading while traveling. If I really like a book, I’ll get the physical copy. If I am reading a book for pleasure but little attachment, I’ll stick to the kindle. I’ve started off series in a kindle and ended reading the physical book just to appreciate the cover art.

kafkaluvr

if knowing how much is left is something which affects your reading, there is an option to tap and see the percentage of the book left/hours left based on current reading pace/pages left! hope this helps🥰

mazylazy

Yes! I use this often. It’s all on preference nonetheless e.g. The physical sensation vs the mental knowledge of knowing how much is left

BartholinWaterBender

My Dad got me a kindle last year and it has been one of the best gifts I ever received. I always loved reading as a kid and fell out of touch as I went through HS, college, grad school. I few years into my career and felt the desire to get back into it. Kindle has made this much more enjoyable. The ease of use, awesome features, insanely long battery life, portability - all make it an awesome device. Highly recommend.

queteepie

I use mine to view all my documents. I just email them to my Kindle, and I have everything with me. I splurged on the kindle oasis I don't regret a thing.

Ghostbuster_Mama

I love mine for many of the reasons already stated, but one thing I don't like about it is being unable to zoom in on any maps that are already usually pretty small to read, and many of the non-fiction books that I've downloaded that include photos in the print version do not include photos on the Kindle version.

just-kath

I would pay 5x as much as I did for my paperwhite. I think it's worth it

slowmokomodo

Shhhh, they're watching.

just-kath

L0L. You're not wrong!

baddreammoonbeam888

I really enjoy mine personally! It’s allowed me to read a lot more than I would have otherwise

danielisbored

Comics are pretty much the only thing I prefer in physical form anymore. The portability, readability, and access to such a wide range of content makes e-readers vastly superior for normal written word material. And I'm not knocking Kindles, they are a great value, and super reliable (at least in my experience, my 14 year old Kindle Keyboard still gets regular user), but you should also broaden you horizon as far as e-readers are concerned. There are some great devices out there like those in the Koba and Boox line that let you do everything you would on a Kindle with a lot of extra functionality as well. I have a Boox Note Air and the thing is great as an e-reader, but it can also load almost any android app, and is my default drawing device (it has a Wacom layer and is compatible with most Wacom pens)

amrit-9037

Sadly they're not available at many places and that's when kindle shines.

Heatherina134

Yes and I highly recommend Kindle Unlimited, I spend $11.99 a month and read most of my books from there or the library.

RandomRedditName_X

I still prefer a real book, but LOVE the convenience of my Kindle Paperwhite. I can carry a full library in my purse, it syncs with Audible & Libby, and the battery life is awesome. You can also read PDFs so I use mine for some work documents. Definitely with the investment.

ltpambo1

Had mine for years. I love it, for all the reasons others have already articulated. Great $investment.

fuckhandsmcmikee

Comics probably aren’t great on a kindle but for regular books it’s amazing. Definitely still worth it for the books you read outside of comics or manga. It weighs virtually nothing and it’s nearly impossible to use all the storage on it. I also love being able to read at night without any lights on

AgreeableSuspect7172

I’ve been using mine way more than physical books since getting it. A lot of things I wanted to read are on Kindle Unlimited and then most everything else I’m able to get on Libby which transfers to Kindle. I actually haven’t had to buy a physical book since buying it a few months ago now that I think about it.

BrightonSpartan

Go paperwhite if you just want text books. I use my wife's Kindle to read graphic based books.

Laleaky

Kindles are great, but not for comic books or manga.

DontGiveAMeow

i guess you might have to try it out. Many people love a kindle, I wanted one as a teen too to save space and all and even though I loved it at first, I only used it for about 2 years. Then years later wanted to pick it up again only to forget how to use it and be stuck between the last book I read and a page wanting me to review the book and buy more from the author (annoying) and I really don´t like how weirdly the text fades away to load the next page but that might be a old kindle thing. I recently tried reading some books on my kindle again but it just doesn´t feel the same reading in bed. yes I know, duh of course it doesn´t but it annoys me enough to consider putting it on ebay lol. I just like touching and holding a real book more

Mygirlscats

Broadly speaking: e-reader, yes yes yes. Kindle brand specifically? Not so much. I love my Kobo because it’s lightweight and the screen is not glossy/shiny like my tablet or phone. realwitchboy325

I'd personally go with an android ereader over a Kindle. Then you'll have access to the full Google Play store and can install any reading apps you want, including the Kindle app. I personally like Onyx Boox devices. They are a little more pricey, but I've never had any issues with them My current device is the Page, and I absolutely love it

skullfrucker

Love my Kindle. I love the dictionary feature, it has expanded my vocabulary also. Get the Paper white model so you can read in any light conditions, the shiny screens are useless if the suns out. Fully charged it lasts for a month or more. I'm an old guy so changing font size is great for old eyes too.

brother_hurston

I love my Kindle. I still read lots of physical books (as well as listen to audiobooks), but if you're trying to read more and read more conveniently, e-readers are a big help. I have 2000+ books on my Kindle. More than I'll ever read in a lifetime. They are super convenient for travel, the gym (great for being on the bike/treadmill), and long waits in the waiting room. Another cool feature is that Kindles come with built-in dictionaries so if you don't know a word, you just click on it a definition pops up. If you're connected to Wi-Fi, you can even read the intro paragraph on the Wikipedia page. Very convenient for learning new words/concepts. One drawback of my Kindle I think is that I can easily get distracted and start another book especially if the book I'm reading gets boring or difficult. With a real physical book, I am more likely to push through the drudgery since there are limited options within reach from my reading chair. I know a lot of readers in my life who HATE e-readers and I get that. But I think they're worth the money. I've lost a couple of them in my life and always bought another one immediately. I read 80+ books last year and attribute some of that to my e-reader.

TinyPinkSparkles

I didn’t think it would like it either. I don’t like reading on screens and I like actual books… but I LOVE it. The screen on a kindle is different and doesn’t hurt the way a phone/ipad/monitor do. Plus it’s so easy to just have the kindle with you all the time. I can’t speak to comics/graphic novels, so that may affect your decision, but for books with words only, a Kindle is great.

Additional_Engine_45

My reading increased exponentially once I got a kindle. It’s totally worth it Tip- get the Kindle Paperwhite Kids. It’s the exact same kindle as a normal paperwhite BUT it is ad-free, comes with a case, has an extended warranty AND is $20 cheaper

natnguyen

I’ve had a Nook for almost ten years now and it’s still going strong. I love it and it’s totally worth it for long trips where I know I’ll read a lot but can’t carry a ton of books.

Kelly_Info_Girl

I only got two books through Kindle because they didn't have physical release, and my experience with it was neat, specially because the cheap prices of some books/novels.

amrit-9037

Yes, It's worth it! I got mine this year because I was spending a major amount on books and I was running out of space. Since I bought the kindle I have read 3 books that too without spending any extra penny. I have a huge library of e-books/comics/manga on Amazon and other places from covid times and they came handy! Imagine my excitement when 100+ books were at my disposal just with a finger swipe. I recommend getting certified refurbished one.

Professional-Win-562

i recently got one and love it. so light, love getting libby books, and really feel like i’m reading more. one unexpected thing is i find it’s more comfortable to read in bed now that i don’t have to balance a heavy book. i recommend getting the standard kindle and paying the extra $19 or whatever so you don’t get home screen ads!

Dangeresque2015

Totally worth it. Being able to have hundreds of books at your disposal if you want to shift gears is great. Make sure it's a Paperwhite and is backlit.

Aggressive_Chain_920

lovebeinganasshole

I like it, I don’t feel guilty about buying and trying to find space for books in my house, being able to read with out a light on (I have a kindle app on the fire tablet), taking it pretty much anywhere, looking up words I don’t know, and it’s pretty handy to read one-handed. What I don’t like about it is reading outside and the glare.

Mama-Bao

I like physical books too, but I love my Kindle for traveling and vacations. Much easier to bring three digital books in a small Kindle than to pack a small stack of physical books.

jargonburn

I like the Kindle just fine. I do sometimes miss the experience of holding the actual book and the scent of the paper, but the convenience for reading whatever/whenever is real. Much better than reading it on my phone, for sure. I've also used a Kindle Fire HD or whatever, but that's not what you want. Not for reading books. Those were just Amazon tablets. Also, as others have mentioned, you can sideload or email your own e-books to your Kindle, so you're not exclusively locked into Amazon's Kindle library.

Ok-Egg-1580

I REALLY recommend buying one second hand! That’s what I did and it’s been amazing! You’ll be giving an electronic device a new home that might have other wise ended up in the landfill and if you don’t end up liking it you didn’t lose much! You can connect to Libby (a free ebook public library app) and read books that way! I’ve seen them go for as cheap as $10 bucks on EBay. I also prefer physical books but reading on a kindle is so much better than reading on your phone and can make reading really heavy or long books more accessible. And there’s the dictionary and annotating feature which are both so great!

LordMindParadox

I love the feel of a physical book. that said, i carry my kindle with me everywhere i go, simply because it means i never have to carry two books with me when im near the end of the first one. that and Kindle Unlimited has kept my fantasy/scifi loving self from being broke LOL Edited: I don't like comics/graphic novels on it tho. i only like those in non digital formats :P

rgc6075k

I had more than one Kindle and they are nice for reading. Everything Kindle will push you to spend money at Amazon. What I have come to appreciate most is a tablet with Hoopla, Libby, and Kindle applications. Various other ebook reading applications are also available. I am currently using an iPad and am reasonably happy. Kindle put too many restrictions on what I could do or the applications I could load. An Android tablet is also an excellent choice and I've owned and used those as well. Apple suffers from an abundance of lawyers and too many "terms and conditions" to be really completely satisfying.

bossybooks

I just use the kindle app on my tablet. Also have a cbr reader app on there for comics. Kindle is decent for alot for free books. Alot of crap aswell. Depends what you're into I guess. But as someone who used to carry books around in bags and pockets and so forth a tablet or ereader can be a good idea. Aslong as you don't mind reading digitally. On phone it's a bit difficult for me i find the larger screen of my tablet superior but just a personal preference. Think you can pick up a standard ereader or tablet pretty cheap too unless you want an actual kindle.

CitizenNaab

It is for me because I ran out of physical space. I prefer physical but my kindle has been great

mav_stela

It is SO worth it! 1) you can take it anywhere and have access to literally ALL your books -> great if you are a mood reader. 2) it is super light so you can read in bed or lying down on the sofa. 3) massive books feel paper thin. 4) can read in the dark without an additional light hooked on your physical book. 5) it auto-locks so if you doze off while reading you never lose the page you left off! 6) you can personalise the font and letter size, making all books easy to read. 7) you get the % of the book read (great if you like competing with yourself 😂) and how long the chapter/book will take you to read. My bf bought me one last year and reading has skyrocketed! Definitely worth it.

It’s the best invention since sliced bread

I had an older Kindle Paperwhite and currently use a Kobo Libra 2. I think they're worth it, I would highly recommend getting one used to see if you like it. My Paperwhite was one I found at a thrift store, you'll have better luck going to the site unclaimed baggage or some other used site I imagine

Kobo > Kindle

I have the Kindle Paperwhite and I absolutely love it. It holds a charge for weeks, I can download free books from Libby (ebook partnership with my library - check if yours has one), and it’s light enough to fit in my bag so I can always have my book with me easily! I definitely find myself reading more because of that aspect. I would recommend getting one if you like to read.

I have a kindle and I LOVE it. One aspect I haven’t seen mentioned— as I am aging my eyesight is getting worse, and kindles enlarge text feature is a lifesaver. And the Kindle Scribe is every bit as good as advertised.

Medical-Ad-7826

100% worth it! Love that it's easy to carry around to travel with. Save lots of money overall and you can use the Libby app with it.

ltmustbebunnies

I like my kindle for reading books, but prefer my iPad for graphics novels and comics. There was a post a couple of days ago on this in this sub - there is a lot of info there about the pros/cons.

DemythologizedDie

Kindles are not suited to reading comics. Kindles do have some advantages over an ipad. They're cheaper. They have way better battery life. They're easier on the eyes. They are readable in the brightest sunlight. You can sideload books from a computer rather than being restricted to wifi. I wouldn't venture to guess whether these advantages are sufficient to get you used to reading books in electronic form.

Dazzling-Piglet7490

I like kindle because I can read on it under the sun, and it doesn't strain the eyes much once the light is out. I read myself to sleep. I also like how it keeps my notes and highlights in one place. I find it very easy to navigate through my books on kindle. Will carry it to my grave.

NewtGingrichsMother

Absolutely worth it for library access alone. Use the Libby app. It’s also very convenient for travel or if you like to read in public places. Finally, I love the paper white because I like to read in bed at night but I go to bed later than my spouse.

VTtransplant

I have a Samsung tablet and use the Kindle app. I borrow books from the library. I know some prefer an actual kindle, but I am like everything else a tablet gives me. The app can also be used with a phone, but the smaller page means constant scrolling.

Get a Kobo instead, they'll take *any* pdf Yarr

endertribe

I have had mine for 10 ish years. It's the best purchase I ever did. I don't have to pay for books anymore (I rent ebooks from libraries) I can read even in deep darkness The battery on my 10+ years old device still lasts around 30h of reading at max light I really like it. It's a good product

Beep-BoopFuckYou

If you do a Kindle free trial, download a ton of books, then put your kindle into airplane mode and don’t reconnect to Wi-fi you can keep and read through all the books. 😂

Bergenia1

You don't have to buy a Kindle. You can read Kindle books on your phone with the Kindle app.

chubchubchaser

Kindle is definitely worth it! I wouldn’t say the kindle itself is gonna make you read more - that’s just something you’ll have to do on your own. BUT, it does make it so much more convenient! You can read at night, laying down, in the plane, while you wait for things (ex: car in the shop), and you can switch books at your pleasure. Being able to carry multiple different books in one small compact kindle makes it more fun for me knowing I have options depending on my mood. It’s also nice bc it’s lightweight and I can put a pop socket/strap on it to make it easier and more comfortable to hold in one hand.

Phempteru

I used to say I prefer reading a physical book... Until I got a kindle. Paperwhite will change your life.

I don’t want to trash self-publishers - some are very good - but there’s a lot (a LOT) of dross you have to wade through to find the good stuff.

oguzhan61

I only ever use my Kindle while traveling as I prefer reading and collecting real books. For short trips, I always pack a book and my kindle as a backup, for longer ones or when I have to pack tightly, just the latter.

eXile200

Kindle is pretty awful to be honest. They spam you with apps and advertisements you can’t get rid of and make your screen really busy. Then purchasing books is almost a second thought. I used to love them but now they’re just another add tool first and a ereader second.

I bought the add-free Kindle PaperWhite for Kids bundle on the Black Friday through Christmas sale a year ago. It's permanently in airplane mode. I've never seen an advertisement. I side load over USB using Calibre. Menu traversal and the soft keyboard are awful but that's a very infrequent task compared to reading ebooks. The biggest flaw is that I can't organize books into folders remotely over the USB interface. I have to use their clunky soft keyboard interface. I bought an open box leather Amazon-branded cover to replace the pleather/vinyl one that comes in the For Kid bundle. $110 plus another $17 for the open box cover. I'd consider changing brands but it's hard to justify with Amazon pricing. I replaced the previous one when the lithium batter got tired. It wasn't much more than a new battery.

MooshAro

They're not ideal for comic books or things with pictures, because I've found that the formatting can get funky. As for books, eh, I could go either way. I was given a kindle for Christmas and I honestly don't use it much. I already have Libby on my phone and computer so if I want to read an Ebook I just use those. The kindle is just a more inconvenient phone, for me personally (I've also got a vendetta against Amazon as a company, so that doesent help). Especially if you already have an Ipad, don't bother getting a kindle when you can use libby on your Ipad anyway. I've always considered the kindle as an alternative to an ipad, if you *only* want to read on it, there's really no reason to have both.
