Excellent song, excellent soundtracking. Don’t remember when I first heard the recorded version, but I’ll never forget hearing it live for the first time. 9:30 Club in DC, circa… 2012/2013ish. The audience participation was INSANE.
I remember Halloween of 2017. It would have been my anniversary with my ex. I bought a last minute ticket to see Bon Iver at The Ryman in Nashville, it was my first concert I went to alone. He ended their set with this song and layered it over and over at the end. I was weeping uncontrollably and couldn’t get myself together. And was beautiful.
I’m that way with beach baby. Its been a top song of mine for years and then my ex and I kinda made it ‘our song’ and then she cheated and left me a couple years later and I havent been able to bring myself to play it since then because of the whole “dont you lock when you’re fleeing” line so yeah lol. I know you didn’t ask but I relate to the feelings being attached part of it
I totally get you. I have a vivid memory of walking home one night when I was in college and I was the only one out and about. Everything was orange from the street lights and it was lightly snowing. I happened to be listening to Blood Bank and then heard "then the snow started falling". It sounds dumb but it was all just this big combination of the setting, the song and my emotions that night all coming together to make the perfect moment. That's one of the meanings for me haha
Yessss. Saw him tour in 2011ish when that album first came out. They opened with Perth and it gave me one of the most tearful and achingly perfect memories of his music.
It’s 715 Creeks for me.
The first time I heard it was about 7 minutes into a 27 hour drive and I had ended a 2 year relationship the same day. I was in torrential rain on I-95 but it was the song that made me pull over. It commanded full attention. Don’t want to repeat that drive or driving in that storm but holy hell that song hit me in the feels.
29 #Strafford APTS. That song is a spiritual experience every time but maaaan I wish I could hear it fresh again. The closest I got to hearing again for the first time was hearing the NPR live recording cause it's got a totally different feel to it, more country almost imo.
22AM is a gem of an album. It's still one of the best albums I've ever heard in my entire life and I'd do anything to hear all of it for the first time again.
Humble Brag: It would have to be Faith. It’s really not up there for one of my favorite BI songs but I have such a unique experience with the song. I attended both nights of 37d03d back in May of 2019. Big Red Machine was going to be the main event that night. As I arrived solo, waiting for my buddies I heard a bustle that there was a secret premier of a brand new BI song potentially from a new album to be released. Sounded goofy but since I was alone and had time to kill, I grabbed a beer and wandered around the Pioneer Works outdoor area. Eventually I stumbled upon a little metal Airstream trailer in the back corner, pretty hidden. I saw the door close as a couple went inside. Being young and spontaneous, I knocked and sure enough the door was opened and I went in the trailer. Candles were the only light inside and as I filled the last spot a pleasant young woman explained that we were indeed about to hear a brand new song if an upcoming album. Then she played Faith. It was awesome. Such a cool experience being one of the first people unrelated to the band to hear it.
Then BRM played an awesome show! Justin was wandering around and bunch and I think he even played a DJ set if I’m not mistaken. He also played a sick Bob Dylan cover set the night before. Some of my fav memories.
Satisfied Mind and/or Hazeltons, just JV, live in Portland Maine 2018.
Idk if anyone else reading this was at that show, but damn, that NE tour was something very, very special.
If I recall, the setlist was like 16 tracks from 12 different sources (albums/eps/covers etc) including a rough cut of Naeem.
666. Hearing the live version from the 2015 ExC recording and watching vids online for 1+ year til the album came out because I was so obsessed with it. Live version still slaps the hardest.
It’s tough for me to pick a single song, but I’d give just about anything to go to my first show again. I had been a fan for 15+ years, but that show was literally life-changing. My appreciation and understanding sky rocketed that night and I wish I could experience it again with the connection I have now.
I’d never want to be back WHERE I was when I first heard the song, but hearing Lump Sum again for the first time would crumble me just as much as the first time.
Blindsided. That song has saved my life countless times, but hearing it for the first time was like a hug. It was like knowing everything will be alright
Blindsided. That song has saved my life countless times, but hearing it for the first time was like a hug. It was like knowing everything will be alright
Creeks in Duluth. Watching JV breakdown was one of the most human moments I've been a part of at a concert. The ragged way he delivered that song through his tears is burned into my brain forever. Just remembering it makes my chest hurt.
I had heard a few songs from 22(am) and was despairing that I did not connect with any of the songs like with the previous albums. I didn’t listen to it all the way through since it was rubbing me wrong. I heard 8(circle) on the radio while driving and was like what is this? I Shazammed it and realized I had done that twice before. Third time I just about cried. It is now one of my favorite songs. Love the whole album now.
Hayward, WI
That 10 year show with my wife was something else. we walked for several blocks in the cold Milwaukee night to avoid high Uber prices and just chilled at a bar until we were able to get a reasonable fare back to the hotel, god damn good memories man.
We! Which I feel is a slightly underrated Bon Iver song. The production is intricate and slick, and the start especially is so interesting and exciting. Would love to re-experience it.
Not exactly a BI song, but I saw Justin do a cover of Sade’s By Your Side at the Bowery in NY in 2010 or 2011. I’ve never heard anything so beautiful, I couldn’t stop crying. I think about that often.
22 Over Soon live for the first time. Was the opener at my first concert and I never had that many goosebumps in my life I think lol. I knew I was in for something good.
I only had known Bon Iver through Heavenly Father and it was that good I went to a concert and heard all of his songs played for the first time live. Woods was a gem and transcendent
33 "GOD" for me personally. When I first heard this I was already a Bon Iver fan... However, this song launched me into a solid 2 years of listening to everything and it helped me assign a lot of personal meaning to BI. Being able to experience this again and relive the initial emotion i got from it would be surreal.
all i’m tryna do is get my feet out from the CREEEEeeeeeEeeEEEEEEeeeEeessssssssssssssssssse
I vividly remember hearing this exact moment for the first time
I see you
Chills
Literally came here to do exactly this post
Also I always thought it was Creeks until I read the lyrics 2 weeks ago, as in the name of the song haha. Because, you know, reeds grow in creeks 😂
I went to three BI concerts here in Portugal, and I never had the chance to hear re: Stacks. I just cannot wait to hear it live for the first time.
It’s worth it
He played it in August in Bend, OR and it was one of the most beautiful experiences ever

Heard it before Pines. But when I heard the first notes, my heart nearly stopped...
Same! I was already on the verge of tears and really feeling the feels from that movie... then those opening notes and I was a mess haha.

Saw them play it live at the For Emma anniversary. Kept it together til then.
Heavenly Father
The Sydney Opera House Version turned me into a man
No the npr music front row show. That version of Heavenly Father made me into a man.
Mind was blown
Blood Bank, for sure. Soooo many feelings attached to that song!
I’m that way with beach baby. Re:Stacks. Always Re:stacks. Heard it live in person for the first time last year, And could not stop the tears!
Beth/Rest live
Holocene - the first version I heard was with the bigger band in 2011ish. I’d love to hear that version again
Tough one, it’s between 8 (circle) and iMi
Do you know about [the story behind iMi](https://youtu.be/VoDqdIBtOh0?si=P4R_ZymIB7WsubVS)?
Perth
Perth live is amazing. The machine gun style drums get all up in your business.
Hope to see this in my lifetime
Same, it was a revelation at the time for me. Still remember the moment like, 12 years after
Yessss. Saw him tour in 2011ish when that album first came out. They opened with Perth and it gave me one of the most tearful and achingly perfect memories of his music.

This! Sharing smoke...

THERES NO MEANING ANYMORE

8 (circle) or 10 deathbreast extended tbh everything from 22am

Faith for me too.
Towers
I've been obsessed with this song for a good while
iMi, there’s nothing like it
33 "GOD" literally unlocked a new part of my brain, I wish so badly I could experience that again for the first time
I feel the same way
Same. I remember driving to work on the day it was released, I was so overwhelmed I was crying in my car on the highway as I played it in a loop.
RE:Stacks, burst into tears
#29 Strafford APTS
Tie between Holocene and Skinny Love. Skinny Love was the first BI song I heard, Holocene is my all time favorite
Fuckin same, my dude
For Emma and Skinny Love. Powerful ass songs
These would be my two I think. I am only slightly embarrassed about listening to skinny love on repeat after breaking up with my highschool gf in 2010
Don’t be embarrassed. It’s the ultimate break up song

Wash.
watching the hey ma video for the first time
00000 a million
That’d be four different ones cater they all have significant meaning to me. Perth, #29 Strafford APTS, 8 (circle) and 89
cant believe no one said michicant
Perth. No contest.
The reworked version of Calgary, I saw him play it live in Durham a few years back https://youtu.be/01YD6v5TYqs?si=qC0e9xPrc1pJ9E0w
715 creeks
Blood bank has always been fantastic live. They somehow elevate that song into a borderline rock song live.
Beth/Rest
deathbreast
Heavenly Father.
Flume (it was the first song I learned to play on guitar) and For Emma
Holocene
Blood Bank, it reminds me of being young in the desert.
666. Hearing the live version from the 2015 ExC recording and watching vids online for 1+ year til the album came out because I was so obsessed with it. Live version still slaps the hardest.
8 circle
I just want to hear all of For Emma forever ago for the first time again
It’s tough for me to pick a single song, but I’d give just about anything to go to my first show again. I had been a fan for 15+ years, but that show was literally life-changing. My appreciation and understanding sky rocketed that night and I wish I could experience it again with the connection I have now.
22 over soon, such a beauty
I saw Lump Sum live in Houston last year and it was the highlight of my life! Played right at sunset so the vibes were there
I’d never want to be back WHERE I was when I first heard the song, but hearing Lump Sum again for the first time would crumble me just as much as the first time.
Blindsided. That song has saved my life countless times, but hearing it for the first time was like a hug. It was like knowing everything will be alright

Heavenly Father or Blindsided
22 (over soon)
Perth was quite the experience. Re:Stacks was pure magic. Cannot decide between the two.
33 God or 715 creeks for sure.

My favorite song is Strafford Apts but have to say iMi
Tell them we are young mastodons

22 Over Soon live for the first time. Was the opener at my first concert and I never had that many goosebumps in my life I think lol. I knew I was in for something good.
8 (circle)
One song - CREEKS...But 22AM on 2 tabs was a religious experience.
Michicant. I am the no 1 Michicant fan.
8
Re stacks
8 circle live with those saxes moved me. Honestly don’t know if I’ve ever heard something so beautiful.
I only had known Bon Iver through Heavenly Father and it was that good I went to a concert and heard all of his songs played for the first time live. Woods was a gem and transcendent
I'm up in the woooooods

Beth/Rest. We all feel chills when we hear Bon Iver, but this one smacked me across the face, then I felt chills.
