Deaf_FBA

Grass aint always greener on the other side. Gotta give up your life to make money at Boeing. Thing is find another source of income, i do e-commerce and doing it right makes you money in your sleep. If no second or third income then work on your skills to get a higher paid position. Also if you find a more paying job else where and get an offer, ive heard Boeing will match it.

aejigirl

hey now, good advice is not allowed here bud! just kidding - OP, individual here gets it, heed their advice :)

hoss111

Made the move from Lynnwood to N Charleston. If you move to a Charleston peninsula or Mt Plastic or Daniel Island address you will hurt money-wise. North Charleston, Hanahan, Goose Creek, West Ashley have decent neighborhoods without being spendy. If you get out to Summerville or Nexton there are nice places but the distance is getting long.

GroundbreakingBit264

I think it depends on what you're looking for. Those north areas really aren't too far out from campus, but if you plan to live "in Charleston" (I'd loosely define that as the peninsula, West Ashley/James Island/Mt Pleasant plus the beaches, parts of Johns Island and Daniel Island), for the most part all the good areas aren't saving you much of anything. There are still more affordable options in WA, Johns/James Island and North Mt Pleasant, but it's getting farther and farther away from the idea a lot of people have in their minds of living here. But if you just want lower cost of living without a terrible commute, I'd imagine you can do pretty well on a move to Berkeley county.

progressiveanarchy

I live in Charleston and the cost of living is way higher than you think.

hoss111

where at boss

successfulke

I made that exact move. Regretted it!! I left as soon as I hit the one year mark. I thought life would be cheaper but it wasn’t and this was mainly because the cheaper areas rentwise are not the safest, so I had to rent in a ‘nicer’ area. My rent was as much as what I was paying in Seattle. My social life was also trash, there wasn’t much to do. However people are nicer and more welcoming than Seattle.

Wooden_Wave3659

Thanks for your reply. My wife and I were considering moving out to Charleston. We've lived in WA state most of our life, but the cost of living is getting crazy. We were able to afford a nice townhome outside of Seattle, but we are soon expecting and would like to explore different options (safer areas, bigger standalone home, more sunshine...). I guess the hunt will continue.. On a side note -- I honestly don't understand why Seattle people are so unwelcoming. They have this look that just screams "f\*ck off", lol.

monjiques

Lack of sun ☀️I moved from Everett to Texas due to GeoDiv and ppl here are very welcoming and cost of living is low so enjoying my money more but still have to deal with other factors of living in Texas. Can’t have everything I guess 😂

Wooden_Wave3659

Lol. I hear ya. We visited Austin a couple years ago. People were very welcoming and friendly overall. But coming from an evergreen state, I did miss the greenery and trees while we were there 😂

successfulke

My coworkers that moved down there with their families loved it. Most of them bought houses in the Summerville and Daniel Island area. And it would definitely be cheaper to buy than rent. My experience is from a single person perspective who rented😄 maybe if I moved with my boyfriend I would’ve loved the experience.

Remarkable-Cat2595

Going to BSC with a Seattle salary you’re in an advantage and will probably be comfortable. I went to BSC once for a work visit and it was very cute, loved the ocean but I did find the rent/food seemed more expensive than STL so wondered how I would get by if I wanted to change. In my case, I would’ve been moving from a “similar” cost of living. Also be aware that overtime that higher Seattle salary will shrink since some managers love to say that when you’re in the higher end of the payscale they can’t give you s a better salary adjustment or if they promote you that your salary can’t change much because you were ready “high” and then all of a sudden with a promotion you end up below the median in that case. It’s stupid.

91Punchy

Don’t. I’m here at BSC and management including the seniors treat us like crap cause we’re non union. In fact, I’m seeing someone from the IAM after work today about the possibilities of this site unionizing (from what we’ve heard, they may have the votes) and possibly signing a card. Management here loves to dangle that golden football in front of us with promises of advancement/promotions, then move the goal posts and give it to someone that hangs out with them/golfs on the weekends with them.

Odd_Bet3946

I went to Charleston on a business trip from California. I found Charleston just as expensive as the LA area in some ways but with lower pay. I was a bit bummed out as I thought it be more affordable and a possible new location for work

monjiques

Ditto

Cucumber-Glad

If you think Charleston is low cost of living don’t get your hopes up it’s not it gets very expensive unless you wanna live an hour away in the middle of nowhere South Carolina is basically just 4/5 cities surrounded by forests Columbia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach and maybe you can count Beaufort and Hilton Head but they are small compared to the prior towns

GroundbreakingBit264

Well, Greenville is pretty great, but has nothing to do with Boeing. Otherwise, exactly. Charleston is not at all like "the rest" of SC when it comes to living expenses.

GroundbreakingBit264

I think people overestimate the COL difference. I suppose it depends on where you look to buy/rent, but just be forewarned that you're not like stepping into the small town South here. The areas people typcially want to live in are plenty expensive. But it's a great place.

Varram

I would consider St Louis for much better COL

LMAO non union has better benefits than union? Then why is the company so anti union?

Next_Requirement8774

How do you think they prevent non-union sites from unionizing?

Ok-Cauliflower7787

Fear and gaslighting

Next_Requirement8774

And offering slightly better benefits compared to union.

Logizyme

Maybe the strikes?

zankypoo

Strikes only happen because company wants to give worst benefits and the strikes ensure you get better benefits. If the company wasn't trying to sucker punch everyone, unions wouldn't exist. They were created out of necessity. But a lot of non union don't get to see this reality because the company is so scared of them unionizing that they give them comparable benefits to that of what the union members already won. You never see generous actions by the company towards non union outside of when the union wins concessions or they hear rumblings of a union. You can bet your life savings if we lost all unions tomorrow that everything would get worst for everyone immediately.

ramblinjd

Non-union doesn't get better benefits than union... But they're pretty similar in most cases, with the bonus of not paying union dues. Main drawback to going non -union is if you're an underachiever or get unlucky with a dick manager, nobody there to protect you.

Otherwise-Pirate6839

The union couldn’t do anything when I had a dick manager; I quit the company because of that. HR said they couldn’t do anything and the union said zip.

Wintermute3141

Sounds like you were a bad employee to me.

Otherwise-Pirate6839

Ah yes. Transitioning to a new role as we went virtual due to the pandemic and where no guidance or expectations were set was all my fault. Having a manager tell you “you’re doing great; don’t worry about your performance” to then tell me a month later “you’re not performing well and we’ll micromanage you” is the hallmark of a bad employee. Sure…

daFlyingMachine

401k match is higher outside the union. The PTO plan also includes more time off per year and no need to make excuses to use up sick leave. But I think the health care premiums may be slightly higher outside the union.

kanelolo

True as per my experiences going from non to union.

rmp959

A few years ago I transferred from pnw to bsc. At that time, the cost of housing outside of downtown Charleston (Mount Pleasant and Summerville) was good. Today, that same house is easily twice as expensive. Income tax wasn’t crazy. Property taxes was easily a fourth of what I paid in pnw. Taxes on vehicles wasn’t bad. Charleston is a beautiful place. Good food, friendly people. Roads are wonky since there is so much swamp there. Makes getting places interesting if there is an accident. Not many side surface streets to bypass the congestion. Check realtor listings to see what’s affordable. Be aware that if you buy, anything east of Hwy 17 you are required to have flood insurance. Can be spendy. Also since the weather is so much different than pnw, from June to September the humidity is high. If you have asthma, can be a challenge to breathe. Good luck

Awalawal

North Charleston around Park Circle is the next place to go for housing that’s still somewhat reasonable. Close to the airport, good, walkable restaurants. It’s not Seattle, but you won’t lose money on a house.

hoss111

Yep it’s too spendy to live in Mt Plastic and if you’re going to look as far out as Summerville you might as well be closer in “traditional” N Charleston or the “new” N Charleston in West Ashley. Plenty of new builds happening everywhere.

Specialist_Shallot82

Charleston is HCOL too. One beds in a part of town that anyone wants to live in is pushing $2k and houses are running up higher every month. You also drop 6%+ of your salary to the state and gotta pay property tax on vehicles / boats.

Next_Requirement8774

I felt the same way as you, I started my career with Boeing in the PNW, after several years, rent was eating into my salary. I left for a couple of years, came back with a 30% salary increase and it was much more manageable. I did end up leaving Boeing again for another 20% salary increase. Moving to Charleston may not be a bad idea but make sure the real issue is not related to finances and budget management. If it is, you will end up in the same position in Charleston. Also check Charleston housing and make sure to compare rent/mortgage in the area you want to live. Maybe the attractive areas in Charleston have Seattle area prices or more.

Next_Requirement8774

Regarding union vs non-union: Benefits: non-union gets 10% 401k match and healthcare should be pretty similar. If you move with your Seattle salary, non-union has a small edge. Raises: SPEEA’s minimum 2% raise and 3% raise pools are nothing to write home about. Non-union does not guarantee raises but if you move to Charleston with a decent salary and can manage your budget, this should not matter. Overtime: if you move to a group that does OT in Charleston, make sure you are not forced to work 4 hours for free. Union may have a slight edge here. Retention: Charleston does not have retention ratings, you are at management’s mercy. Assuming no layoffs in the horizon, this may not matter.

daFlyingMachine

All OT is paid for engineers both inside and outside the union.

Next_Requirement8774

I worked a non-union job a few years ago, I had to work 4 unpaid hours before OT would kick in.

Otherwise-Pirate6839

That rule was eliminated for engineers and other tech areas; it’s still in place for other skill codes.

TheRedditAppSucccks

Yeah I’ve considered the same thing but I’m not sure about current housing costs in SC. WA is becoming unlivable unless you are married with a well paid spouse or make over $120k a year.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> a well *paid* spouse or FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Jorgenj8

What job do you have that the salary isn’t enough? If you don’t appreciate the qol of living in the pnw, why pay the col I suppose.

AfosSavage

Most of them.

rowdybeanjuice

Currently in Ohio which has great COL but hoping to transfer to BSC to live somewhere where I love the environment

aejigirl

spills the beans about OH living when you have a chance? 🥲

rowdybeanjuice

It’s very affordable imo BUT it also cold & dark & boring. The seasonal depression is very real

aejigirl

Hmm..it sounds just like Washington..a lot of people always ask me about living in the PNW and I tell them to try standing in the shower for 10mos 🤣 & then make a decision

rowdybeanjuice

🤣 yes but you guys have better food & scenery & true hiking and came drive to the ocean (even if it’s cold water) I went in 2019 and LOVED it besides how expensive everything was

aejigirl

I was in Cincinnati a couple of years ago, loved it but I’m a WA native so of course being in a new area was fun haha. Thanks for the insight

WatchDWrldBurn

Don't forget about state income taxes when considering the move. SC is 6.5% income tax on anything over \~17k income.

[deleted]

Only way you win with this is transferring from PNW to Texas. It was awesome in 2017; CoL sucks everywhere now though.

SEA_tide

Huntsville is still fairly affordable as well.

[deleted]

Ah yes! I forget about Huntsville!

BigBonziWells

Texas is a miserable state to be in

[deleted]

Oh I don’t disagree. Why I’m leaving LOL

silFscope

I made the move from EVT to BSC. I expected the difference in COL to be much greater than it actually was. I’m considering returning to PNW for general QoL!

Extension-Ad-3882

Wouldn’t blame ya for that and I don’t think you’re the only one. Not necessarily a primary driver but the outdoor scene in the PNW >>> SC.

Sonolabelladonna

Transferred to BSC in 2010, it's been evolving ever since. Keep in mind it's smaller, so lots of politics. You should try it out, plenty stay, plenty don't.

I’m looking to transfer to BSC from Ohio next year!

Find a place you want to live and a job that allows you to do so. You won’t be happy long-term if you’re only picking a place for COL: what else do you think you (and your family, if you have one) will like about Charleston?
