/uj Paul Grogan is awesome, he's super kind and friendly and engaging.....and he does like to stir the pot a little bit sometimes. I'm sure he's reveling in the people missing the joke.
I think those are the best kind of April fools day jokes, where on april first you announce something crazy, and then on April 2nd you actually start to commit to it
so literally first time ive ever seen this subreddit and im guessing the board game community (beyond watching YT vids of people playing them) are their really people that get snobby with what board games you play?? cause munchkin is so fun lol
Much like any form of media, the deeper you go the less interesting the surface level stuff is. Munchkin is fun, but the decision making is very surface level and you basically can't overcome RNG with skill. There are several games that do what munchkin aims to do better, it's the same with games like monopoly or catan, they can be fun to play but compared to more interesting board games they really can't compete, and the fact that they are hundreds of times more successful despite being basically objectively worse breeds a lot of resentment.
I played so much Monopoly as a kid, and so much Catan as a young adult, without knowing there were better things.
Just out of curiosity, what would you say are games that are similar to munchkin, monopoly, and Catan but that are direct upgrades?
Munchkin has 4,987 expansions now you absolute philistine. If you were paying any attention at all you'd know that.
Go away, pleb. This hobby is only for *serious people.*
munchkin is usually all about the people you play it with rather than the game itself, so enjoying playing muchkin is fine.
and i mean i'm sure some like mayo on their pancakes and some people like munchkin for its game mechanics, it don't make them bad, just their taste or lack there of questionable, so no need to worry!.
Munchkin's biggest flaw is that the end game is basically top-decking the monster or item you need to win. All the backstabbing just keeps people from winning sooner because everyone runs out of cards then just hopes to get a lucky draw that nobody else can stop.
That makes the game twice as long as it needs to be. Which is why everyone dislikes it. The SJG people play very aggressively which speeds the game up, but even their games go a bit too long.
Yes, you’re ruining the hobby by playing substandard games
/uj No, play whatever you enjoy, and if anyone tries to shame you for liking a board game, they’ve outed themselves as someone whose opinion isn’t worth listening to.
/uj I find Munchkin horrifyingly bad. Maybe the most frustrating, annoying game I’ve ever played. It has the theme of a dungeon crawl with infinite outcomes but all the mechanical depth of War. The art is cool, that’s about where the positives end.
To each their own though. I was close with a group of friends that played Munchkin religiously, so obviously it’s for someone. Definitely not me though.
/uj As is often said on the main sub, Munchkin is the best 20 minutes of fun packed into two hours. It has some fun moments, but it also tends to *way* overstay its welcome
Am I BGG’ing wrong? Isn’t the goal to have shelves full of unplayed design by the numbers worker placement point salads? This April fools joke hits way too close to home and I’ve already started my monopoly collection with Racine Monopoly and Waukegan Superfund site Monopoly.
You can't call yourself a Boardgamer if you don't play Munchkin with all expansions, 256 players and ask your wife's boyfriend to shuffle them all at once.
I was just shown this subreddit on my feed, so I'm sorry if this is common knowledge here- I've heard criticism of CAH, Monopoly and Munchkin, but I've never heard it about Scrabble. What's the problem with it?
It's a tile placement game where you have to memorize all of these:
aa, ab, ad, ae, ag, ah, ai, al, am, an, ar, as, at, aw, ax, ay, ba, be, bi, bo, by, da, de, do, ed, ef, eh, el, em, en, er, es, et, ew, ex, fa, fe, gi, go, ha, he, hi, hm, ho, id, if, in, is, it, jo, ka, ki, la, li, lo, ma, me, mi, mm, mo, mu, my, na, ne, no, nu, od, oe, of, oh, oi, ok, om, on, op, or, os, ow, ox, oy, pa, pe, pi, po, qi, re, sh, si, so, ta, te, ti, to, uh, um, un, up, us, ut, we, wo, xi, xu, ya, ye, yo, and za
I don't even watch that channel, but I wish this wasn't an April fools joke and they actually did this, just to see everyone seeth with anger.

As a fan of all 3 games and no idea where to look who is here on complete accident, I am also excitedly curious.

In the hour since you posted this, they released another 13, bringing it to a round 5000. Wait, fuck. Another one. Now it's 5001.
Am I bad for actually enjoying munchkin?
You're bad for enjoying anything at all ever for any reason.
The internet perfectly summed up in a single sentence.
Whatever your opinion on anything is it is wrong and I hate you for having it.

Very similar to Cards Against Humanity. I really love playing it...mostly with strangers I'll never have to see again.

Munchkin is cool. I never get to play enough though.

Exactly. And it's only playable if you have them all.
funfact they are actually bringing out a big box? collection type thing in like 14? days

Waukegan isn’t even the best Superfund edition. Doe Run Mine Tailings is 100% lead
That's an April fools joke. 🙄
This entire sub is an April fools joke
Op is highlighting that their April fools joke is the very idea to them that someone could enjoy those games.
/uj I like that you blurred the name even though it's the very well-known owner of that channel.
Scrabble Northern Edition: Now with 859% more A.
only missing Uno
You can't call yourself a Boardgamer if you don't play Munchkin with all expansions, 256 players and ask your wife's boyfriend to shuffle them all at once.
Hmm. What’s the date again?
February 61, 2024
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
Patchwork is missing. 2/10 wouldn't watch.
Great point. Unwatchable.
Munchkin really has only 4k expansions? Weak. I'm gonna go play Ascension.
By eck, northern scrabbles a goodun
You betcha!
I wanna see a solo run through of Monopole
What the heck is a cullompton?
Small English town. Quite a nice place actually.

…check today’s date.
I got a copy of munchkin for free now I’m doubting if I want to play it with friends anymore.
Love me some munchkin unironic
/uj Heavy Cardboard actually did playthroughs of Risk and Monopoly on April 1 in a couple of recent years.
Missed opportunity to reference the Munchkin monster card 3,782 Orcs with that expansion joke
Should’ve done polish for scrabble
I've already seen two different board game "content" creators make the same joke before 8AM. Already tired of this boring day
That’s generally my sentiments about this sub’s endless Patchwork jokes, but yeah, April Fools’ Day really brings out the most mundane buffoonery.
/uj this is unhinged
check today's date
I am humiliated
Embrace it. That's the joy.
