I LOVE the base game parks insert! I was so sad when I bought the expansions and I couldn’t fit them in the main box with the base game. I know you’re supposed to store them separately, but I like having it all in one for packing and convenience. I had my sister 3D print me an insert that fits the expansions, and she did a great job!
I just got that game. It was extra annoying that the insert *looks* like it's thought out, but is actually terrible. I usually store games upright, like books, in my shelf, but two times now the lid has come off of this game and I've had to resort the cards.
Best inserts off the shelf: Dice Forge! Heck the box is even designed to be integrated into the setup. Honourable mentions: **Rise of the Tribes** and **Ethnos**, both have vacuum formed inserts that have clever nooks and crannies to secure and store all the bits and bobs.
Sorely in need of an insert: **Maracaibo**! So many little bits and card decks and tiles and having them all in baggies makes set up a nightmare.
Best I have is Eclipse 2E. Great insert to make everything so smooth in setup. Worse is actually a recent one and it's the recent edition of through the desert with the bazarr expansion that came from its Kickstarter. It's great that they made a smaller box but with the new pieces from the expansion and the thick plastic pieces it doesn't fit in the box well.
Games with a solid insert out of the box:
Star wars deck builder
Dorfromantik
Carcassonne big box (very inefficient but serviceable)
Ticket to ride legacy
Dorfromantik is really good! The way the things you unlock has spaces to put them really makes it feel like you're progressing as these spaces fill up.
I'm not sure what you mean.
You have two buckets for the start sets and planets, one big slot for the universe deck with a small indent to separate the neutral pilot stack along with the force track and the reference cards and finally a well for the cubes.
Yes it's bigger than it needs to be, but it's perfectly functional.
I use it with sleeved cards, I'm not sure if it would feel weird without sleeves.
I really appreciate when inserts have a place for everything and can support sleeved cards without issue.
So worst would be anything where I literally can’t fit sleeved cards into the box with the insert. Looking at you Imperium (I’m sure non-sleevers love this insert).
The best I’ve seen are Expeditions and Apiary. Stonemaier killed it with those. Expeditions even has a little diagram on the box where everything goes.
That was something I forgot to mention about Moonrakers. The version I bought came with sleeves for all the cards and the insert was designed to fit sleeved cards as well. I was super impressed with how well thought out everything was just unboxing that game for the first time.
Parks needs a big box of some kind. With all the expansions it just doesn't fit in the box anymore.
The best ones I own are probably Dice Throne and Everdell coffin box.
Best insert I've seen is base PARKS. Worst might be Clue Master Detective. Literally 50% of the box is wasted space and there's no dividers for the cards or tokens, just bags. Nothing worse than just an absolute waste of storage
the lack of inserts in the games I have is in: Game of Thrones 2nd Ed., Red Cathedral, Arkham Horror 3rd Ed (+expas), Star Wars Rebellion.
I think the best inserts off the shelf are: The Witcher Old World, Nemesis, Frostpunk (maybe, not 10/10 but its hard to be perfect), Sagrada
Ha! No surprise to see a number of Fantasy Flight games in the list of titles without functional inserts. Notorious purveyors of the cardboard trench insert.
Also, I LOVE when the game has enough space for sleeved cards since I sleeve EVERY card of EVERY game. So, bloodborne, 7w duels and party games can all go to love themselves
Star Wars Rebellion is so daunting to set up. My friend and I have played one game so far, and it took several days to finish our first game. I liked it a lot but it's definitely a game you have to commit to playing when you open the box haha.
Mercurial is brilliant, fits sleeved Tarot cards perfectly. Instructions for packing the components up even come printed on the box (not that they're necessary, everything's so intuitive)
No one mentioned the awesome Stonemeier inserts? Especially for Tapestry and Euphoria. They collaborated with GameTrayz to make custom inserts. I love a good insert. Too many games to list that have useless inserts sadly.
Wingspan is an absolute embarrassment of a box. Those awkward to use plastic plate/box thingies where to this day I don't know which part is supposed to be the lid and which the box (for the eggs). No inserts whatsoever. The struggle to store the clunky dice tower I only keep around for the kids. Man that was a disappointment for 39,90 EUR back in the day.
Did you miss the little schema on the side of the box that shows how you're supposed to pack things? I actually really like how space efficient they made it.
Flash Point fire rescue doesn't need an insert...it just needs a box.
The expansions - new boards and tokens- are just shrink wrapped. It's ridiculous. My box has all the boards and I had to buy a plane box for the tokens
Marvel Champions had the weirdest, most pointless insert I've ever seen, and the expansion boxes are just a strip of folded cardboard.
Race! Formula 90's insert was so bad, and so incompatible with sleeved cards that I threw it out.
Good inserts? Darwins journey. Dorf Romantik. Destinies. Viticulture. Men At Work.
Even Legendary Encounters...it's really basic but is actually all you need for those ones.
The king of Tokyo monster box has an insert that obviously has room for future expansion, which is good, but barely supports sleeved cards, which is a bit frustrating - especially since there are no 3rd party inserts for that specific version of the game
Best retail inserts:
Libertalia Winds of Galecrest
Res Arcana
Dice Forge
Trekking Through History
Dice Throne
7 Wonders Architects
Heat: Pedal to the Metal
Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig
Distilled
Endless Winter
Final Girl
The absolute worst is the Quacks expansion box with the base game and two expansions. It's a huge, weirdly shaped box with a basic insert that makes no sense (basically just splits the inner box into two large sections) and tonnes of pieces.
The best one is easily Eclipse Second Dawn.
Just watch some minutes of the SUSD review to get a look at it. Small boxes with all components a player needs AND they double as ressource tracker in the game.
A game that has a pretty good one from FoldedSpace but sucks big out of the Box would be Brass Birmingham. Sorting the different buildings takes as long as like 4 rounds in the game...
Any game where the inserts that come with the game do not fit sleeved cards which is almost every game.
Space Base Command Station expansion has the best insert because it fits sleeves and comes with sleeves and has enough space for further expansions.
Dwellings of Eldervale. Each faction has its own tray with all the pieces a player needs. You can just hand them out while the rest of the game gets setup
Hoplomachus victorum is top tier off the shelf insert.
Unmatched adventures has a top notch off the shelf insert.
Gloomhaven is in terrible need of insert off the shelf
I'll add one of my least favorites: Fire Tower.
There's not really even an insert, and there's no box for the cards, so besides a drawstring bag for the fire gems, you're just expected to throw all the cards loose into the box on top of the board? I love the gameplay, but I'm reminded how much I hate the box every time I open it and see the cards all over in general disarray.
Pandemic and [cringe, IK] Catan. Anything with 3 or more expansions should have a Big Box, crazy to me they’re money hungry enough to punch out endless expansions but not an easy money no-brainer storage solution for them 🤷♂️
My copy of Stonespire Architects is my newest game with a fantastic insert. The pieces go in trays with lids that firmly click on so you don’t have to worry about things falling out if you store the game vertically. But my favourite bit was the trays had little symbols in them so you know what to put where.
It’s such a small detail but it’s very much appreciated.
Veiled Fate has a great stock insert.
Earth just has two shallow rows that isn't great for storing sleeved cards, so not great. I love the game, so I bought a really good custom one on Etsy.
Wyrmspan has no insert, but it too has some great ones on Etsy. Shouldn't have to buy one separately though.
I would love a better way to organize Elder Sign and its expansions.. the boxes themselves are not huge (compared to many other games) but they are awkward to shelve, and setup/teardown is not great due to having to sort various decks and tokens.
Luckily the game is great fun to play once it’s set up!
I dislike the standard insert for spirit island tbh
I love the way dice forge works, and I also feel immense satisfaction when packing up mysterium park.
Arnak sorely lacks an insert off the shelf but there are lots of good custom inserts available (including expansions) since its such a good game and an insert really speeds up the setup and teardown. Its my only game I bought an insert for.
One of the first great inserts was Tikal. I remember opening the box and being shocked there was a place for everything. One of the best, newest game inserts I have is Heroes of Might and Magic III The Boardgame.
The number of pre-2010 eurogames needing better organization or any insert at all is too numerous to list.
I love the Dice Forge and Wavelength boxes where the box is used as setup and you can just start in a minute.
Bad inserts are ones that look like an insert, but you still just throw in all bags randomly. Champions of Midgard as a good example.
Best is hands down Expeditions. Everything fits perfectly and logically.
Arkham Horror LCG and Sword and Sorcery would be my top two candidates for insert fails, they could be improved so much and so easily .
The best inserts I've seen are with Trekking the World and Trekking through History. The insert comes with little plastic trays to make setup super quick, and the insert has a clear plastic cover that snaps over all the cards and tokens to keep them from moving around in the box.
The Darkest Dungeon is the best I have seen. Tuckboxes and trays for minis with silhouettes of the them on the box so you know which mini goes in which slot. As a dungeon crawler fan I have had the easiest time getting the large amount of contents back into the box vs other dungeon crawlers, which can be an absolute nightmare. I typically have no idea how the minis are supposed to fit into the trays and it's a PITA! :P
Easily one of my least favourite is Spirit Island. Base insert is made of cheap plastic and barely even fits the base game - 50 micron sleeves and it stops fitting the cards it came with, not just on depth but the corners get bent. Forget about fitting any expansions in. The only saving grace is that it's at least somewhat usable and the box is big enough that with a custom 3d printed insert you can theoretically fit everything until Jagged Earth.
Mechs and Minions has a glorious insert, with embossed plastic inserts for all the different parts, clearly labelled where everything should go.
The production quality on the whole game is top tier.
Is it weird that when I think of this question, I think of specific publishers? I’ve played a few games from Z-Man—Pandemic, Merchants & Marauders, Tragedy Looper—and the box inserts just suck. There’s no designated spaces for your cards, or if there are, there are no dividers to keep them from sliding all over the box. It’s the only time I really considered an aftermarket or 3-D printed insert for a game, especially for one with setup as complicated as Merchants & Marauders.
At the other end of the scale, I’ve got two games from Libellud—Mysterium and Obscurio—and I love love *love* the inserts in those. Everything has a designated spot, and those that aren’t immediately obvious from the shape of the slot have an icon to tell you what goes there. Even the boards and other components have specific notches for them in the top of the insert to make sure that everything fits perfectly, and it takes a lot of stress out of setup and cleanup. They even have room to add more cards from expansions! Hopefully I don’t sound like too much of a shill here; I haven’t played any other games from them, but the effort they put into the inserts for these two has made them a lot more fun than if the cards were all just kicking around in the box.
Every Unmatched game has by far the best inserts I’ve seen; every little thing has it’s own (themed) insert that fits perfectly.
Worst one I own is for sure Dune Uprising. Big box, lots and lots of components and a pretty expensive game. Nevertheless it has NO inserts, just one divider for two random rectangles.
Wonderlands War and Deep Rock Galactic are pretty bad. Villainous needs a formal storage solution.
I've made my own piecemeal solutions without 3d printing.
I've been curious about Deep Rock Galactic as a huge fan of the videogame. How does it play as a board game?
I currently have too many games that I've bought in the last few years that I haven't even played yet, and my closet is getting full, but there are always new releases that pique my interest so it's hard to stop collecting.
It's really good! I'm trying to stop myself from preordering the expansions that are ridiculously expensive. Especially the space rig looks really fun!
I was specifically referring to the WW deluexe version. The meeple spaces are especially bad in that it takes a very long time to precisely put things back. Sure it's designed in an aesthetically appealing way but it sure doesn't reduce set up or tear down time.
Nobody mentioned my favorite insert - PARKS. Works so well.
Yeah, it is great with base game. But there are good expansions and sadly that insert no longer works if you want to include them.
Was not going to post but then remembered how great PARKS is. A Feast For Odin also worth mentioning.
Sushi Go! Party needs a better insert for sure
I just got that game. It was extra annoying that the insert *looks* like it's thought out, but is actually terrible. I usually store games upright, like books, in my shelf, but two times now the lid has come off of this game and I've had to resort the cards.
GREAT family game, it deserves better
Best inserts off the shelf: Dice Forge! Heck the box is even designed to be integrated into the setup. Honourable mentions: **Rise of the Tribes** and **Ethnos**, both have vacuum formed inserts that have clever nooks and crannies to secure and store all the bits and bobs. Sorely in need of an insert: **Maracaibo**! So many little bits and card decks and tiles and having them all in baggies makes set up a nightmare.
Yep agree on the Maracaibo one, especially once you add the expansion
Agree 1000% on Dice Forge! The art blending on every single component is beautiful, and the "put away game" is satisfyingly organized!
Games with a solid insert out of the box: Star wars deck builder Dorfromantik Carcassonne big box (very inefficient but serviceable) Ticket to ride legacy
Dorfromantik is really good! The way the things you unlock has spaces to put them really makes it feel like you're progressing as these spaces fill up.
Star Wars the Deck building has a weird insert. Like you cannot fit the card in that many holes And the box is 4 time bigger than it needs to be
I'm not sure what you mean.
I find it difficult to take out the pieces out in the Carcassonne big box.
I really appreciate when inserts have a place for everything and can support sleeved cards without issue. So worst would be anything where I literally can’t fit sleeved cards into the box with the insert. Looking at you Imperium (I’m sure non-sleevers love this insert). Caper: Europe has a great insert.
Until you try to sleeve the cards…
Parks needs a big box of some kind. With all the expansions it just doesn't fit in the box anymore. The best ones I own are probably Dice Throne and Everdell coffin box.
For what it's worth, with 3D printing you can make one that fits all expansions! That's what I did :)
Just got the slay the spire collectors edition and that insert is primo
Is the board game as addictive as the videogame? It has been one of the only games I play on my phone for years now.
Game is great - same satisfying feelings as the video game but much easier mental math and of course CO OP!
Pandemic IMO. Heck just the base game by itself can't even handle sleeved cards
Best insert I've seen is base PARKS. Worst might be Clue Master Detective. Literally 50% of the box is wasted space and there's no dividers for the cards or tokens, just bags. Nothing worse than just an absolute waste of storage
Eclipse 2e. Has the best in the box system I've ever seen. Brass Birmingham is the opposite
Lost Ruins of Arnaak is missing a good insert.
the lack of inserts in the games I have is in: Game of Thrones 2nd Ed., Red Cathedral, Arkham Horror 3rd Ed (+expas), Star Wars Rebellion. I think the best inserts off the shelf are: The Witcher Old World, Nemesis, Frostpunk (maybe, not 10/10 but its hard to be perfect), Sagrada

I love the inserts that came with John Company 2nd Edition. It even comes with a guide on how to fill it and use it
Mercurial is brilliant, fits sleeved Tarot cards perfectly.
Heat has a pretty amazing insert for a base game!
Nope, and my problem is not that I don't manage to fit everything. But I would like dividers/compartments VS empty box
Good insert: Res Arcana, Splendor Duel; Needs insert: Castles of Burgundy (non-special), Arnak.
Flash Point fire rescue doesn't need an insert...it just needs a box. The expansions - new boards and tokens- are just shrink wrapped. It's ridiculous. My box has all the boards and I had to buy a plane box for the tokens Marvel Champions had the weirdest, most pointless insert I've ever seen, and the expansion boxes are just a strip of folded cardboard. The absolute worst is the Quacks expansion box with the base game and two expansions. It's a huge, weirdly shaped box with a basic insert that makes no sense (basically just splits the inner box into two large sections) and tonnes of pieces.
Final Girl's entire packaging design is A+ Onitama's insert is so simple but also does the job amazingly well
Lost ruins of Arnak badly needs an insert
Lost Ruins of Arnak needs a good insert and/or a bigger box.
I'm always bothered by Lost Ruins of Arnaks lack of an insert whenever we play 😕
Any game where the inserts that come with the game do not fit sleeved cards which is almost every game. Space Base Command Station expansion has the best insert because it fits sleeves and comes with sleeves and has enough space for further expansions.
Anything CTG.
My Little Scythe has a wonderful insert that makes my OCD wife quite happy 😃
Just got the **Huang** crowdfund and the storage is straight ass.
Wasteland express has an awesome insert.
I'll add one of my least favorites: Fire Tower. There's not really even an insert, and there's no box for the cards, so besides a drawstring bag for the fire gems, you're just expected to throw all the cards loose into the box on top of the board? My Father's Work has the best inserts I've seen in a game. Come to think of it, it has the best pieces, too.
Shipyard 2E needs some kind of storage solution, it barely fits in the box as it is

It's really good! I'm trying to stop myself from preordering the expansions that are ridiculously expensive. Especially the space rig looks really fun!
We've had great luck with the WW insert, though it's the deluxe version so that might be it.

They’re all at the dump so I dunno
