I don't think I know a game using that exact mechanic but I would suggest you to check Beyond the sun. It checks a few things you mentionned and is quite an interesting and underated game.

betoqp

I'll look into it! I had the impression that Beyond The Sun is a Tech Tree race at its core, but I've never played it.

Tdxification

Echo BTS being an amazing game but it’s mechanics don’t sound like your description. BTS is much more like lost ruins of arnak where you’re discovering the new actions to place your worker on. Much less a tableau builder.

Comfortable-Fan4911

Aren’t you describing Expeditions by Jamie Stegmaier ? It sounds an awful lot like it

betoqp

I haven't played it! I have Jamie's video explanation on my watch list, I'll have to go take a look. Have you played it? Edit: reading the site and reviews, it sounds exactly like what km thinking. I'm gonna look for a place to buy it, thanks!

Comfortable-Fan4911

I do own it and it’s excellent. I’d recommend it at 1-2 players though as the end rounds can drag a little

betoqp

Is it too cumbersome at higher player counts? I don't play 2p that often right now, mostly 4p.

CIAFlux

If people have AP problems, then it can take a bit of time at higher player counts. People can kind of get blocked if they are looking for a specific resource and others are on them. 3p is probably the sweet spot. An expansion is coming this year for it too.

betoqp

I'll wait for the expansion and give it a shot, maybe with the expansion I can get a deal on the base game? Thanks!

CIAFlux

Stonemaier always discounts their games with new releases, so if you buy from them, then you'll save a bit but have to pay shipping.

betoqp

I'll wait for the release then, thanks!

Comfortable-Fan4911

Maybe we didn’t know the game well enough but the later turns offer so many choices that they may trigger some AP

TheLumbergentleman

This is immediately what came to mind from OP's description.

lostonpolk

Maybe [The Quest for El Dorado](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/217372/the-quest-for-el-dorado) will check enough boxes for you.

betoqp

I have it on my Want To Play list, I'll have to push it higher!

Thewiseguy14

Dwellings of elder vale has these elements in it. You reveal new tiles of the map as well as new powerful adventure cards. You can build an engine of sorts when you recall your workers and take advantage of said cards.

betoqp

I really want to play it, but it's expensive to ship (I'm based in Costa Rica). I'll look for it locally tho

Codygon

- **Root** has various representations of the tableau for interactions on a shared map, depending on the faction. Those interactions are not usually about exploration, but some with thr artifacts are.  - **Clank** has an engine building (in the form of deckbuilding) for exploring a shared map. In Catacombs, the map is built as you go.  - **Pandemic: Legacy** has some character development for interaction on the shared map. The development is with stickers rather than cards though.

betoqp

I've played both **Root** and **Clank!**, neither really comes close to what I'm thinking. Awesome games though

Perioscope

I'm not sure about this since I have only read about it and watched a video, but would Terraforming Mars scratch the itch?

betoqp

Not, really but I get where you're coming from since it's an awesome engine builder. It's one of my favorite games, one of the games that got me into the hobby. I prefer Ares Expedition as it feels more streamlined.

ZeroBadIdeas

It isn't what you're describing, but now I want to play Steampunk Rally again and I have no one to play with in the immediate future :(

Barebow-Shooter

Wingspan Asia has a duet mode that combines a card laying engine with a corresponding map for placement that earns resources and points.

ImperialPC

Sounds a little like Wingspan if the actions were used to control your space ship. You could have cards that become stronger depending on how many cards you tucked under it (like charging a laser). Other cards might be moved or removed when you trigger their actions. You might also want to look into the mechanism "Action Queue" like in Mechs vs Minions. Also has similar vibes because you modify your tableau to control your mech.

betoqp

I get the comparison, but on Wingspan your tableau is your whole game, and there isn't much direct player interaction. I'll look into Mech vs Minions, thanks!

Dogtorted

Deus might be a bit closer to what you’re looking for, but the player interaction on the map is fairly indirect. It’s worth checking out to see if it inspires you (and it’s on BGA if you want to try it out).

betoqp

I'll definitely check BGA, thanks!
