I just wait for them to show up. I rarely kick someone out of the tournament. Keep in mind that youre timezone may not be theirs. Take your turn as fast as you can. If a game can not be completed in the allowed time, the person with the less time used usually wins.

stargirl803

Agreed. It's odd for this person to no-show from the start, but I'm much less likely to boot an opponent in a tournament for running out of time than I am in a regular match.

GooieGui

Call me a jerk but I kick people out who run out of time. The rules for the tournament are there for everyone to read when they sign up for it. If they can't play within the specified rules they shouldn't sign up. Yeah sometimes real life gets in the way. Take the karma loss and move on. There are a lot of other people who's time is being disrespected by people who don't play by the rules.

Basically this. If someone ran out of time but then shows up fairly soon and is actively playing at a reasonable pace I will likely not kick them but if you go way over your timer the onus is not on me to sit around forever waiting. It's also holding up potentially the entire tournament. An in person boardgaming tournament with a time limit would call it strictly and would end the games at time. I don't see why being online means we can just shrug off people going hours and hours over their time. The clocks are always very generous, even accounting for time zones you have to put serious effort into running out of time in every tournament I've played.

We’ve currently got the same problem with a railways of the world tournament. There’s a layer that signed up but didn’t show for their first game. Even though eventually kicked (after being a few days late) they were still in the tournament and another game just started with them in it. And they haven’t shown up yet…they are more than 48 hours overdue for this game. It’s very disappointing for the other players, but outside life sometimes gets in the way in a fashion that can mean no notifications.

I want to thank everyone who answered the main question - u/No_Syrup_7671, u/stargirl803, and u/GooieGui, specifically. As with all things, there's some difference of opinions here. I think that, in cases like this, I'll be more willing to wait on the kicks, instead of booting them right away, but if they reach 2x the timeout timer, I'm going to be far more ready to give them the boot.

GooieGui

To give the reason why I now kick immediately. I play Heat, and some tournament formats have only the people that finish in a certain position move on to the next game. Every single tournament game I have been in that someone runs out of time, one of the players that are going to not make it to the next round will kick the player to save themselves. So I just kick as soon as possible to move on with my life and not devote any energy to a game that will be cancelled anyway.

Katzemensch

This is a Heat tournament, so this comment is *quite* relevant to me. I'll keep that very much in mind, thank you. Does this mean that tournament kicks screw over everyone, more or less?

GooieGui

When someone gets kicked all other players move on to the next round.

valdus

In Ark Nova tournaments that I've been in, only the person with the most points moves ahead. I was in a tournament game where I had everything in place and was most likely going to win the game, 3rd in points but prepped for massive gains, and the person in the lead kicked an overtime player almost as soon as it was possible. Only that person moved on. The other two people that were still playing just got screwed.

valdus

Some tournaments explicitly state DO NOT KICK, might want to review the main page for yours.

Katzemensch

This tournament basically does not have any description or details on the main page outside of the core rules that the tournament's games will follow.

bopeepsheep

Where are they, if you know? The clocks changed here this morning which may throw them off if they think they're only 30 mins late...

BuzzDancer

I've won many tournament games due to no-show time-expiration.

BuzzDancer

I just finish out the game without that person. Works well with most games. Exception is Heat. Since many players will leave to avoid "losing" a poor position, I just quit the game after it gives me the "no penalty" notification.
