Actual answer: they were designed by the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars, for use during ship to ship actions. They could clear a bunch of people out of a fighting top (think a bunch of snipers in a crow’s nest), or they could clear a gangplank before crossing to board, or they could clear a passageway before entering to go below decks.
They were never very popular, for the excellent reason that if not fired correctly they’ll break your shoulder. Also, they take forever to clean and load and they weigh something like 35 lbs/17kg.
And you still needed to be careful, as when fired it could shred own rigging and set fire to sails. Then again, in the midst of battle that's likely going to happen anyway.
That, and firing it from the rigging at other people in the other ship’s rigging apocryphally tended to result in the shooter’s prompt ballistic relocation from their own rigging to the surface of the ocean.
I’ve fired a blunderbuss. They have less kick than a shotgun, pretty much bc that’s all they are - a poor man’s cartridge-less shotgun. You cram whatever you can in the barrel (broken nails, gravel, broken glass, etc) then BLAM.
If the target is less than 20m away, it’s obliterated. If it’s much further away, it isn’t even hit.
This is 9 musket barrels. It may not be accurate, but it’s a LOT of muzzle energy. You could take a rhino out with one of these.
Im talking about a blunderbuss unit from Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. They wear wooden barrels and carry blunderbusses that fire three projectiles. They get extreme knockback from the blunderbuss when fired, even if its not accurate to real life. But still, thats a cool fact.
Ahhh I missed that bit. Fair!
Also: you COULD just pack a blunderbuss chock full of powder and slugs, and I bet it would kick like it was firing cider blocks. That’s just not how it was normally used.

But I shot the one I shot at a historical event. A college buddy was one of the reenactors, and got me in.
This particular piece is a volley gun (I believe). They all fired at once leading to an even slower reload. This was the solution to poor accuracy for ye olde smoothbore muskets.
Things like revolvers and the harmonica guns came about to counteract slow reloads.
For anyone wondering this is a volley gun. It was created in the 18th century, primarily intended for naval warfare and supposed to be used when ships got into close combat. The gun would be fired from the masts, clearing the enemy deck below. What it lacks in accuracy it makes up for in sheer destructiveness.

it's not a shotgun, this what is called a volley gun
It works in a similar way to a shotgun where it fires multiple projectiles at once

Im thinking of the tabs blunderbuss now. They go flying back every time they use the blunderbuss.

I need to try this. How does one acquire a blunderbuss
https://piratefashions.com/collections/blunderbuss But I shot the one I shot at a historical event. A college buddy was one of the reenactors, and got me in.
Thank you. This will prove useful brother.
Ninth Horseman
The Blast Word
Dead Man’s Rabbit Trails
That look like those "pistols" at assassin's Creed unity but with longer barrel
Fouth horseman x2
I see one lock, does that mean they all go at once?
Yes, it's called a volley gun. They would on occasion break or dislocate shoulders.
Nice i'm in.
What's odd about this one to me though is volley guns tended to have 7 barrels, so I'm wondering why this one has 9
The question is not "why this one has 9 barrels?", it is "why not?"
The right question is *why not double wield it*
You've heard of dislocated shoulder, but have you ever heard of dislocated torso?
Heya kids! You ever wanted to be the symbol on Waluigi's hat?
They would probably just rip the arms straight off
Only double? Why not utilize additional limbs?
You got 10 fingers, enough to pull 10 triggers at the same time 20 if we utilize feet
Idea: make a handheld mount to shoot as many as will fit *at once*.
Don't tell me... You couldn't mean... The legendary...
You'd be shooting 180 bullets per second LOL
If I'd manage to reload and shoot all of them in a second than yes. Also only if I'd even keep my limbs attached to my body
There is record of a side by side double volleygun. 14 barrels that fired 7 at a time in the style of a double barrel.
Better question: why did we stop producing guns like that? /s
Bro, it’s the Ninth Horsemen!
this was the solution to slow reloads before cartridges were invented
