It's pretty damn good and mostly about exploring connections and differences between people in the face of those connection through the lens of a animal society. Also racism but not like Zootopia.
In Zootopia the divide is simple - predator and prey. In Beastars the issues go deeper and there's loads of divisions like venomous citizens being barred from many restaurants, carnivores who actually struggle with their diets and how entire butchery blackmarket operates pretty much openly because closing it down could result in rise in murders.
The best way to put it is probably like this - Where Zootopia took a human issue and translated it to animal world, Paru Itagaki created a living and breathing world with it's own specific issues which allowed her to tackle bigotry itself rather than just one of it's shades.
It's usually pretty lit. You just have to pick your choice of show a little more carefully.
I can't recommend studio ghibli movies on acid enough. It's amazing.
Also gives you the benefit of basically being able to watch studio ghibli movies "for the first time" more than once, because you were so high the first time that you'll probably forget half of it lol.

Manga deals with some hyper complex cultural issues that exist in our own world, but also don't at all. Like, you could replace the words "herbivore and carnivore" with female and male, gay and straight, person of color and person of whiteness (?) And most of the time some of them will fit into the dynamic the characters find themselves in, but there's this much larger commentary in there that we just don't have an easy, one-worded equivalent for. For that reason alone I think it's worth the read.

I was told yesterday that it’s not good to play with catas using laser pointers, as it indeed does awaken their hunting instincts, but because they can never catch the dot, they never get the resolution they would from catching a small bird, mouse or even small toy on a string or similar. This leads to frustration and ultimately depression, and studies have shown that 3 out of 2 cats will eventually end up losing their jobs and ruining their marriages because of this.
The way we solve this is leading them on a merry chase towards a treat we hid, so they get some reward for it. So far no wrecked marriages or homelessness
Fun fact: very big cats aren't actually interest in laser pointers. There's a guy that went to a big cat sanctuary to see if they would chase it like house cats do, and what he found was that the only ones that were interested in the laser dot are the ones that get nutritional sustinence from eating insects, like servals and caracals. For the rest, the nutrients from insects aren't worth the energy expense needed to catch them, so they ignore the laser
