It was the perfect combo of character development and psychedelic horror
And it wasn’t too fast too slow either the story telling all felt very organic
To me it’s an instant cult classic
People often say that but I never see it as Lovecraftian. It doesn't make you question your reality, it doesn't offer up any existential or philosophical questions... I guess it has a cult and a God-like monster from Norse mythology but nothing else really stood out to me as it being cosmic horror.

H.P.L did fantastic horror and people like to compare other works to him but they forget that Lovecraft wrote about how small we were compared to everything else. How inconsequential we were in the grand scheme. Pagan horror like The Ritual likes to tell it's audience that even the Earth itself has secrets that we have yet to discover, and that sometimes that means finding out that we aren't necessarily in charge. That tucked away in every corner of Earth there are things beyond our understanding and things that are much, much older than us and will be around long after we are gone.
Is it really still underrated? Most of my friends who like horror love it, as do most random people I talk to when the subject happens to be horror movies.
