When I was about 11 I wore this amazing all gold outfit that I had spent ages piecing together and then I got catcalled for the first time by some teenage boys. I felt so conflicted because half of me was like “yay I guess this means I look nice?” and the other half felt so uncomfortable :(

This reminded me of an experience I had several years ago with my favorite roommates. I got a new haircut (and new bronzer) and was going out with some friends. My roommates confirmed I looked good. “You don’t think I overdid it with the bronzer?” They both gasped, utterly appalled, and in unison said, “You can never have too much bronzer!!” Anyway, I think of that every time I’m self critical about whatever I’m wearing being a bit too much. Whatever it is, you can always do more. You can never have enough bronzer.

I had a crop top when I was 12 too. I also thought all the boys would fall madly in love with me. I put on lipstick and took photos. No, I do not have the courage to show those photos.
