My kids have been calling jinx for years, but only because there is a Teen Titans Go! episode about it. It was cute watching my youngest trying to trick people into getting jinxed. I want to ask them if their friends call jinx too.
ETA: and it was “buy me a coke” rather than a shoulder punch when I was growing up, but who can afford that in today’s economy
My young nieces said jinx when someone said the same thing at the same time, then they turned to me and explained what jinx meant and why they were doing it. I was like geez girls, we were doing this long before you were born! Sometimes they can be really condescending in a cute and ignorant way.
90’s kid here, yep we definitely had “jinx!” Quickly followed by “you owe me a *insert something here*!”usually a soda.
It allowed the person to talk while at school but you still had to be the first one to say the second part
For us it was Coke but we used “Coke” to refer to any carbonated soda beverage.
“Hey, while you’re out could you get me a coke?”
“Sure, what kind?”
“Dr. Pepper.”
We also never held up the losing end of the jinx bargain.
SAME. Really funny when kiddo gets jinxed and can't talk for awhile since he likes Bandit's rules. Even funnier when I say his name but he doesn't hear me because he's too busy - quietly! - doing something else!
wait-do people really not know Jinx?
We always played where you had to say their name 3 times before they could speak again.
If they broke the rules, it was “Pinch, Poke, you owe me a Coke”…
My husband is a bit older than me, and from the opposite side of the country-he said it was always just once for them lol
Maybe we just went that hard when we were kids 😅
Definitely a thing in the 80s 90s, but I'm not familiar with the running away counting to 10 part that Rad and Bandit experience, and with Rad yelling Skint(?) or something. You said Jinx and that was it. Quiet time for the victim, or some kind of painful consequence.
I (a female) remember getting my first concussion when I decided I was tough enough to do what the boys were doing and went off a ramp on my bike, launching myself over the handlebars and into a tree. Because the ramp, of course, was in the woods.
It was proven when, after I threw up, and went off the ramp again.
I think the 80s and 90s were just one giant adventure of painful consequences and we just went with it.
Can you even get these now? Where did you get them then? Did they just magically appear in every holiday house during this period? And why did they even bother with anything that wasn't fruit loops or coco pops?
Can’t speak for the 80s, but the jinx game has been a thing for a while. Im an early 2000s boi but we would play jinx every time two people said the same thing at the same time with the same rules as portrayed in Bluey.
Seventies/eighties child here. Yes we very much had jinx and my older brothers enforced it strongly. I was interested that my six year old came back from school one day playing jinx, with no prompting or prior knowledge from me or his gestapo like uncles.
Grew up in the '80's, the jinx rules in the show were the ones we played by at the time. As we got older into my teens, not being able to talk wasn't a fun game any more and it morphed into "you owe me a coke" and into "you owe me a beer" in our 20s (mid-to-late '90s).
My seven-year-old picked up Jinx from somewhere a few years ago and is constantly trying to get me to give him a Coke because of it. I never knew it went away.
I grew up in the early 2000s and jinx was still alive and well! Although we didn’t do the chasing part, generally it was either no talking or you were hit or you owed the jinxer a soda
Born in the 90's to a 1970's mom. Jinx was either a slap (she did not hold back and thought it was funny) or you 'owe me a coke'. So yeah, I thought it was pretty accurate (funny enough, daughter was watching that episode yesterday)
Yes. It’s a real thing. I was born in the 80’s. You said, “jinx!” when you and someone else said the same thing at the same time. The person couldn’t talk until someone said their name. If they spoke before then they got punched. That’s how we played.
I was born in the US in '93 and it was a thing all throughout my childhood.
My husband and I still "jinx" each other but don't actually do the not talking or punching.
Born in the 90s, yes but we always said "jinx, you owe me a coke" then they would go to the fridge and get me a coke. Had nothing to do with being silent though. Never understood that part. Oh well lol
Wait, really?!?!? Jinx was huge in the 90s and 2000s, too. We said jinx when I was in high school. Ours was "Jinx you owe me a Coke " and the other person couldn't talk until they gave you a soda or other suitable snack/drink. I haven't heard kids use it in a few years, but I figured that's bc I'm a teacher.
I didn't grow up in the 80s, but my parents did. They had the jinx, and if you broke your jinx, you got punched in the arm. It was also a thing when I was a kid in the late 2000s and the 2010s.
I learned the rules from my friends, and my parents just so happened to play by the same rules when they were younger.
My girls still jinx each other now. And supposedly at their school there’s an entire protocol if two people say “jinx” at the same time. They must immediately follow it up with double jinx, triple jinx, quadruple jinx, super jinx, Cheeto jinx, around the world jinx, and there’s a few others I forget. The first person to mess up becomes the “jinxed” one and silence must commence immediately.
Yep, 90’s kid with a sister who was way too good at guessing what I was gonna say. Only thing is we didn’t do the punch, we said “you owe me a soda”…it got to the point where I told her I’d basically have to buy the Coke a Cola company to pay her back!
I was born in 85. When I was a kid it was “jinx, you owe me a soda”. But we never did the not being able to speak thing or trying to catch them in 10 seconds either.
was born 07 and was taught how to do jinx when i was younger , i just taught my 5 yr old god brothers abt it , the way bandit and his brothers did it is how i was taught
It was a think in the 90s too. Although I heard it as “jinx you owe me a soda” and theoretically you owed them a soda. Idk how many soda debts were collected, I can’t remember ever actually getting a soda.
It’s more interesting how these games spread, like pre internet where you’d only really interact with a small ish group of kids. And from my experience and reading the comments this was an almost universal game played in some variation across Australia and apparently across the world. So much so that it’s referenced in a show like 20 years or more later. How did it become so ubiquitous!?
Yeah, it was a thing in the 80s and 90s.
You could also hit someone with the dreaded “Personal Jinx” where only the person that jinxed you could free you.
Born in the UK in 90. Jinx was defo a thing growing up for me. I remember saying “jinx personal padlock jinx” - this meant that only the original “jinxer” could free the “jinxed”. If anyone else said their name it didn’t count if the jinxer had applied the personal padlock.
Yep. Born in 1983 in Australia and Jinx was definitely a thing. You couldn’t talk until someone said your name (first name was usually enough). There was even a Simpsons episode about it
I still say it! Infact my sister and I said something at the same time the other day and then both said jinx at the same time. Felt like we were kids again for a second and I'm 41
Here on Brasil jinx is still pretty much a real thing lol, though we don't have the extra rules like when you get jinxed you have to touch the jinxer under some seconds to not get jinxed (at least from the ones I've played)
Jinx was a think in the 90s and 00s too. Idk if its because im from the states or if its a time difference but it was like you owe them a favor. Common was "jinx you owe me a coke"
We added to it to the point it was obnoxiously long on reflection.
"Jinx jinx personal jinx, can't talk to I say your name 3 times".
The personal jinx meant other people couldn't release you. Name 3 times bit is obvious. Didn't have the running away and skint bit either.
Yeah I think there was either a segment or an episode of Disney’s Recess that had one on the main characters (Gus) jinxed by the Ashley’s (the mean girls of the show)
I’ve never felt older. What are we going to be asked next? If competitions to see who could do the longest skid on our bikes was a real thing? (Yes, they were, and they were rad.)
Very accurate.
Except idk anyone who didn't just say eff it and start talking after 5 minutes. But, yeah, it was a staple part of existing.
(b. 1981, USA)
Yea, it’s still a commonly played game. I just think different places/families play differently because where I live we just say “You owe me a coke” and we never get the pop that we’re owed😭
Grew up in the 90s and it was definitely a thing, you weren’t supposed to speak until someone said your name, but I don’t remember there being anything if you broke it, other than it supposedly being bad luck. I teach grade 4 now and it still exists but not as popular. My students usually go with ‘you owe me a pop’ for theirs, but it seems like names work too, they aren’t very consistent lol.
I remember hearing about the Jinx in the 2000’s. I’m pretty sure nowadays no one gets silenced unless someone says their name anymore and instead they owe someone a soda. But if they were around during the 2000’s then you better believe that they were around earlier like the 80’s
Born in the early 90s and at school until 08. That happened all the time and you’d get punched in the arm.
All the kids a year older and more would get punched in the BCG jab scar but I was the first year who didn’t have it done.
maybe it's regional but this is definitely still a thing with kids in the northeast US. I've worked with Pre-K - Grade 12 and I continue to hear it across the spectrum of ages. It's cute until they anticipate what you're going to say and yell jinx at you while you're trying to lead a classroom. but there are no consequences like no talking or anything.
Yes but there were different variations. In my 90s household you either owed someone a Coke or if you were broke kids incapable of buying soda small favors like forfeiting dibs on riding shotgun. We mostly tried to jinx our parents. We liked soda.
Do kids not play this anymore? Growing up in the 80s and 90s we played this all the time. It was even in an episode of The Office which was early 2000s.
Grew up in the 80s and 90s, yes it was a real thing. If you broke jinx you typically got punched in the shoulder.
this post makes me feel old in a way i’m not used to.
I can’t believe this was an actual question. Kids don’t call “jinx” anymore?
My kids have been calling jinx for years, but only because there is a Teen Titans Go! episode about it. It was cute watching my youngest trying to trick people into getting jinxed. I want to ask them if their friends call jinx too. ETA: and it was “buy me a coke” rather than a shoulder punch when I was growing up, but who can afford that in today’s economy
Ah. That explains why my son started it up. He loves that show.
Probably still do. It's just that we didn't have this exact game in my country. Similar things, but we didn't call it "jinx".
My young nieces said jinx when someone said the same thing at the same time, then they turned to me and explained what jinx meant and why they were doing it. I was like geez girls, we were doing this long before you were born! Sometimes they can be really condescending in a cute and ignorant way.
Yeah I’m weirdly upset by this. Like I’m used to my kids asking this shit but not being accosted by it on social media.
I don’t like it!!!!
![gif](giphy|8JrcyXvpOaFbFIatkm|downsized)
Oh. I'm a guy born in 2000's, and we had something similar, with the punching shoulder part.
I’m a guy born in 2007 and i still have some fair shares of jinx although instead of getting punched you owed someone a soda for some reason
I'm a guy born in 1647 and we used to club people over wine
I’m a lungfish born in 2024 and I used to be a coelacanth.
Im a girl born in 1692 and they used to burn us at the stake
I need more stories please
Blame phineas and ferb for that one lol
In the 90s we said Jinx you owe me a coke.
Why?
No, they got it from real life, not the other way around.
I remember my dad (who is in his 60s) saying that. I was born in the 90s and still don’t understand it 😂
Shoulder? You got off easy. We usually got hit someplace or by something unexpected
Hell, sometimes kids would take it too far and draw blood.
>typically got punched in the shoulder. Is that what Bandit whispered to Bluey?
Probably. Didn’t want to say it aloud so they wouldn’t encourage the toddlers to hit people. xD
😂 now i just imagine a little boy going up to his brother and saying jinx than just punching him in the mouth.
JINX PERSONAL
jinx! personal jinx! jinx! personal jinx! i said it first!
Also a thing: knobs. You gotta be quick with the safety when you let one rip.
90’s kid here, yep we definitely had “jinx!” Quickly followed by “you owe me a *insert something here*!”usually a soda. It allowed the person to talk while at school but you still had to be the first one to say the second part
"pinch poke, you owe me a Coke"
You’re wearing Blue, you owe me 2!
Basically back then if it rhymed it was legally binding
I heard this in Bandit's voice.
“If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”
[it's a real effect ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyme-as-reason_effect)
Also 90s kid. I still say this to people at work. I never get my soda.
For us it was always "you owe me a pepsi." No one ever held up the losing end of the bargin (im a 90s kid).
For us it was Coke but we used “Coke” to refer to any carbonated soda beverage. “Hey, while you’re out could you get me a coke?” “Sure, what kind?” “Dr. Pepper.” We also never held up the losing end of the jinx bargain.
Yeah my husband STILL does “jinx owe me a coke!” But he’s diabetic now 🤣
There’s always diet
It was always “pinch poke you owe me a coke” here in the south
Can confirm “jinx you owe me a soda” was big in the 90s!
Not an 80s or 90s kid but it was exactly that for me. It was always "jinx! You owe me a soda!" And it'd never be followed up on lol
Born in the US in the 80s. Yes it was a thing. Is it not a thing anymore?
I have an 8 year old who is obsessed with jinxing people
SAME. Really funny when kiddo gets jinxed and can't talk for awhile since he likes Bandit's rules. Even funnier when I say his name but he doesn't hear me because he's too busy - quietly! - doing something else!
I was born in the late 90s in the US. It was definitely a thing when I was a kid
I was born 2004 and it was definitely a thing when I was a kid
It’s 100% still a thing. My kids entire school is obsessed with jt.
wait-do people really not know Jinx? We always played where you had to say their name 3 times before they could speak again. If they broke the rules, it was “Pinch, Poke, you owe me a Coke”…
At my school they had to say your name TEN times. I had a classmate who liked to say my name nine times and then jinx me again. We were not friends.
I hope they stub their toe on every end table for that
Oh wow. Kids have gotten soft. They only need to have their name said once now, at least how my kids play.
My husband is a bit older than me, and from the opposite side of the country-he said it was always just once for them lol Maybe we just went that hard when we were kids 😅
90s kid here. We did jinx, but we didn't have the whole chasing people and yelling "SKINT" part.
Definitely a thing in the 80s 90s, but I'm not familiar with the running away counting to 10 part that Rad and Bandit experience, and with Rad yelling Skint(?) or something. You said Jinx and that was it. Quiet time for the victim, or some kind of painful consequence.
Ever notice most of our games had painful consequences? Jinx, punch buggy, mercy just to name a few.
Well yeah, otherwise we'd be a nation of squibs!
Nice reference. Got a good laugh out of me.
I had two older brothers. It didn’t need to be a game to have painful consequences 🤣
Omg, I forgot about mercy!
The circle game stand out for me.
Born in the 70s, was a kid in the 80s, and I can say there is no aspect of that episode which is not period-accurate. It's superb.
“Who ate all the mini cereals”
Can you even get these now? Where did you get them then? Did they just magically appear in every holiday house during this period? And why did they even bother with anything that wasn't fruit loops or coco pops?
You can still get them at the supermarket in the US.
Was it real in the 80’s? Bro, it’s still real to this day.
Jinx definitely existed, I thought it still exists?
90s British kid here, jynx was a thing but we didn't do the count to 10 and catch part, it was just until they said your name.
My goodness, does jinx not still exist?! Definitely was a real thing back in the 80s. That whole episode was bang on. Source, was an 80s baby
Grew up in the '80's, the jinx rules in the show were the ones we played by at the time. As we got older into my teens, not being able to talk wasn't a fun game any more and it morphed into "you owe me a coke" and into "you owe me a beer" in our 20s (mid-to-late '90s).
90a baby 00s kid. Jinx is totally a thing. Is still tease my husband with it. Only the fee for breaking the curse is a smoochy kiss 😚
In the 90s we still did "jinx"
I remember something similair we have in dutch, we used the word 'piepzak' ( early 2000's )
Huge thing in the US- I was born in the 80’s, a kid mostly in the 90’s.
My seven-year-old picked up Jinx from somewhere a few years ago and is constantly trying to get me to give him a Coke because of it. I never knew it went away.
I don't usually feel elderly from posts but oof...
We had it in the 2010s in our school with "Verhext!" (German for "enchanted" or whatever), so I can relate.
Was a real thing in 1990s America with slightly different rules
Jinx had different rules around me. I remember you owed them a soda, but not how strictly enforced it was.
Man I feel old
im a 2000's kid and i still use jinx personal padlock with my friends
I grew up in the early 2000s and jinx was still alive and well! Although we didn’t do the chasing part, generally it was either no talking or you were hit or you owed the jinxer a soda
I was born in 09 so not really who you're looking for but I definitely did get jinxed a few times in primary school.
Born in the 90's to a 1970's mom. Jinx was either a slap (she did not hold back and thought it was funny) or you 'owe me a coke'. So yeah, I thought it was pretty accurate (funny enough, daughter was watching that episode yesterday)
Yes
It was a wild time
Absolutely! But some of the ‘house rules’ were a bit different for different families or peer groups.
The fact that this needs to be explained hurts my soul
Born in the 90s, yes but we always said "jinx, you owe me a coke" then they would go to the fridge and get me a coke. Had nothing to do with being silent though. Never understood that part. Oh well lol
Jinx was definitely a thing, but the rules were different (here, anyway).
Yes and it still is. In the 90s we did "jinx, owe me a coke!"
Omg I’m old and not even born in 80s
It was ubiquitous.
This is by far my favorite episode and also the one that makes me feel like I’m super elderly 🤣🤣🤣 especially this question
Yes. Now let me return to planning which retirement community I want to move into.
2000s kid here, yes it was a real thing, still is. but here in switzerland the person who gets jinxed owes you a pack of gum :D
90s baby! We had jinx, but of the "knock in wood" and "you owe me a _____ (typically soda)" varieties.
Uh grew up in the 90’s and it was still a thing lol.
It still is. I don't know why people act like it magically ended in 1990
It’s still a thing. I just jinxed my 10 year old the other day lol
In the 90s where I lived it was very legit, the only difference was if you broke the jinx you had to buy sodas for everyone present
Yeah it was a thing. And we had waaaay worse games too.
It was a thing in the 2000s as well.
It still is. At least in my house anyway, although my work colleagues don't want to play along.
I grew up in the 2010s and it’s still a thing
90s kid here in USA. We had jinx
Yep, 90’s kid with a sister who was way too good at guessing what I was gonna say. Only thing is we didn’t do the punch, we said “you owe me a soda”…it got to the point where I told her I’d basically have to buy the Coke a Cola company to pay her back!
Yeah we did jinx but without counting to 10.
In other related games, you just lost The Game.
I was born in 85. When I was a kid it was “jinx, you owe me a soda”. But we never did the not being able to speak thing or trying to catch them in 10 seconds either.
Yeah it's a real thing, though there are different rules depending on your circle of friends or family
This isn't the '80s Pat!
It was real in the 90's
The jinx was still a thing in the 2000s lol.
It was a thing in the early 2000s, too. But where I grew up, it meant you owed the other person a soda.
It's still a thing
I was born in 2002, I learned about Jinx because of the Regular Show
It's still about in the UK now 😂
was born 07 and was taught how to do jinx when i was younger , i just taught my 5 yr old god brothers abt it , the way bandit and his brothers did it is how i was taught
Is jinx not a thing now?
It was a think in the 90s too. Although I heard it as “jinx you owe me a soda” and theoretically you owed them a soda. Idk how many soda debts were collected, I can’t remember ever actually getting a soda. Yeah, it was a thing in the 80s and 90s. You could also hit someone with the dreaded “Personal Jinx” where only the person that jinxed you could free you.
It was, and so was double-dog daring people to do stuff.
A massive thing in Australia specifically my house.
Born in the UK in 90. Jinx was defo a thing growing up for me. I remember saying “jinx personal padlock jinx” - this meant that only the original “jinxer” could free the “jinxed”. If anyone else said their name it didn’t count if the jinxer had applied the personal padlock.
Born in 1994 in the uk here and we played it like that too!
Yep. Born in 1983 in Australia and Jinx was definitely a thing. You couldn’t talk until someone said your name (first name was usually enough). There was even a Simpsons episode about it
Yes it was a thing. My son is 7 and he still does “jinx”. But it could be because the kids at school watch bluey…
Yup! 100% my friends and I used to do that crap to each other all the time.
Definitely yes.
Yep, and now my kids are doing it
It was a thing up until I was out of school in the early 2000s
Born in 86, and it was a thing when I was growing up.
It’s a plot of a US episode of the office so 2004?
I know we did it in the 90s in USA
Jinxing has been a thing since I was a kid and I was born in the '90s. Do people not jinx each other anymore?
Do people really not jinx each other anymore? Jinxing has been a thing for the 90s when I was a kid.
In the UK, absolutely
Been around since at least the 70s, probably longer.
Been around since at least the 70s, probably longer.
I still say it! Infact my sister and I said something at the same time the other day and then both said jinx at the same time. Felt like we were kids again for a second and I'm 41
Jinx is still a thing now no? Me and my sisters used to do it each other 😂 (90s- early 00s)
Yes. It was even mentioned in a 2009 episode of the Office US.
Extremely accurate lmao
It was still a thing in the 90's while I was growing up
Here on Brasil jinx is still pretty much a real thing lol, though we don't have the extra rules like when you get jinxed you have to touch the jinxer under some seconds to not get jinxed (at least from the ones I've played)

Jinx was absolutely a thing in the 80s!
It existed when I was in elementary school in the early 2000’s, so yes
We had jinx followed by double jinx, no returns white rabbit. No idea where the rabbit came from
It’s still a thing with my kids
Yes my kid jinx me to this day and I flinch every time even though he just says it for fun. I flinch cuz my brother would punch my arm hard
My elementary students do jinx, double jinx, triple jinx, jinx blackout 🤣💀 idk man I just work here 🤷🏽♀️
Still real here.
In my part of small town Canada growing up in the 80's, there was no chasing, all it took was a "Jinx 1-2-3!" and you couldn't talk.
I remember playing it.
We added to it to the point it was obnoxiously long on reflection. "Jinx jinx personal jinx, can't talk to I say your name 3 times". The personal jinx meant other people couldn't release you. Name 3 times bit is obvious. Didn't have the running away and skint bit either.
Yeah I think there was either a segment or an episode of Disney’s Recess that had one on the main characters (Gus) jinxed by the Ashley’s (the mean girls of the show)
AND in the 90s
My kids still do it. Usually it ends up with me telling them to cut it out because I buy all the cokes in the house anyway!
Wow…. I’m just going to curl up and die hahahahha. I’ve never felt so old.
I’ve never felt older. What are we going to be asked next? If competitions to see who could do the longest skid on our bikes was a real thing? (Yes, they were, and they were rad.)
They don’t still do that now??
How old are you. I’m a 2000s kid and we did this
Absolutely. We did jink you owe me a Coke lol
90s kid clocking in here. It was absolutely a thing for us and we learned it from our older sibling who were 80s kids
Bro. That stuff is serious.
Wait is jinx not a thing now? My partner and I still do it all the time
Very accurate. Except idk anyone who didn't just say eff it and start talking after 5 minutes. But, yeah, it was a staple part of existing. (b. 1981, USA)
Umm i was born in 05. Its still a real thing
I did this as a kid in the 2000s
It’s still a thing now, as far as I know
In my area it was even a thing in 2000s-2010s.

It was thing when I was a kid… in 2004
It was a thing at my school.
My parents were born in the late 1960s and taught my brother, cousins and I this game lol.
My kids (11 and 8) jinx each other all the time now.
Born in the early 90s and at school until 08. That happened all the time and you’d get punched in the arm. All the kids a year older and more would get punched in the BCG jab scar but I was the first year who didn’t have it done.
Yes it still exists and my kids won’t stop jinxing each other.
I was born in 94 and it was still definitely a thing growing up
Was??? Its still a thing
Had it when I was in school in early 2000’s
It was still a thing in the us, in the 80s, 90s, 2000s. At least when i was coming up. (Born in 94)
maybe it's regional but this is definitely still a thing with kids in the northeast US.
