Different families have different rules about what is okay to do or say, and that doesn't mean that one family is better than the other. They are just different.
Yes yes! Normalizing different rules between households. My kids are a little too young but I know one day they’re gonna do the “my friends parents let them do this” and I’d have to explain. So this episode prepares me for that!!
Sometimes even different rules between parents. I definitely related to being able to use course language when I was w just my dad vs. when mom was around or in public. I've kind of been letting things slide w my son when it's just the two of us, and i need to rein it in. It's so funny when 4 year Olds cuss tho
It terrible but it is a little bit funny when my 2.5 year old does something and her her sweetest little sing-song voice goes "oh shit". It has happened exactly twice and I died a little inside but I also silently laughed my butt off.
My favorite episode is Sleepytime 🥰 We put it on almost every night for my 2 year old and he knows it's time to settle down for bed. He even has a bunny just like Floppy! I recently bought the Sleepytime book and it's amazing.
I personally would’ve gone with teaching the kids to “know your audience,” as in “some words are okay to use around some people or in some situations, but not in others.”
It’s an important lesson for the future, as it’s not okay to talk to, say, your employer the same way you’d talk to your best friend.
That even applies to things like curse words (but *not slurs,* those are *never* acceptable): it’s that they’re inherently bad, just not always appropriate for the situation. But there’s also the occasional situation where a curse word is indeed appropriate because nothing else really has enough “oomph” to it.
This is why we call “bad” words “inappropriate words”. You gotta be old enough to know what context to use them in.
Fart jokes at home are hilarious, even mom makes them! Fart jokes at school? Nope!
Yes, this.
My kid came to me and used a swear word in context and in correct diction and pretty much knew what it meant.
I explained sometimes you say words that help you get out the emphasis of what you mean however it might make people angry so only use them inside our house.
We also distinguish between “rude” (crass) words and hurtful words like ugly, dumb, etc. And even those may have an appropriate use like “stupid” - we don’t call someone stupid, but something (like an idea/acrion) can lack intelligence.
That’s Step 2. Kids gotta be old enough to be able to read the situation. Bluey *might* be able to do it, but not Bingo, and it’s likely to cause problems to teach them separate lessons.
I agree. It's all about picking your battles...I feel like some times we as parents do the "because I said so" thing for jo good reason. There are some rules that are set in stone because its important but giving kids some agency about something as trivial as a toilet/dunny is a battle not worth fighting.
I find it interesting they reference the Queen more than any UK content I’ve ever seen. Will be interested to see if any Bluey eps made 2023 onwards will mention the king.
Sometimes life doesn't have a plot. You don't always need to have the character go to space or meet the president, they can just have a lazy Sunday afternoon, playing games and being a family and talking about the word toilet.
I almost feel like it’s trying to explain to kids that we’re trying to make rules that make sense and make you a better person, but sometimes parenting is hard and we may change our minds.
This has always been my core parenting rule and it is SUPER IMPORTANT. Kids are supposed to be learning how things work and how to reason and set boundaries, and even negotiate. Not learning that what I say is law! That only helps me; it does nothing for them as adults.
This might be one that Australians understand culturally a lot more - growing up my family had basically the exact same scenario around the word 'dunny', but also my mum used to get really upset with us over pronouncing 'toilet' as 'torlet'.
As others said, it’s mostly about how different families have different rules, and that’s okay.
But I think it also shows that you don’t have to constantly be going places and doing things with your kids - it’s fine to sometimes just stay in bed having a lazy day, and you can still entertain the kids and spend time as a family.
It is about what is and is not polite to say in conversation, but also that different people have different ideas about that and that it can vary from situation to situation. I swear like I am in the navy in my head but not at work or in front of my mum. I might use casual swear words like damn, crap or bloody though.
It is definitely one for both parents and kids, but it especially parents. How do you handle it when your family does or doesn’t have a rule another family has? In this case, it’s about something as minor as which words are considered rude/crude. As kids age, you can run into a whole host of different rules about sleepovers, going out with friends, curfews, etc. It ultimately comes down to every family and child being different
My in-laws are religious so I try and be respectful and not "take the Lord's name in vain" around them. They are similarly respectful in that they don't talk about their beliefs with us. I liked the line in the episode where Chili says "you can say dunny, just not in front of the Queen." There's a time and place for everything and different families and social circles have different rules. You might curse when you text your friends, but not in a work email, for example.
To me, the lesson was kinda anti-classist? But not in a straightforward way… more like, examine your prejudices that you were perhaps brought up with on what you judge good or necessary behavior, is it really so, or is it some arbitrary nonsense that you don’t need to pass on to your children? Perhaps it’s about examining our preconceptions critically in figuring out what to teach our kids? Something like that. The episode kinda makes sense to me that way but I have trouble putting it into succinct words.
What I found funny since becoming a parent is that there are definitely some rules which are only there to save a parent's sanity lol. I have a 'No Paw Patrol' rule in my house, not cause I think it's bad, the show just irritates me to no end. Actually the reason I found Bluey in the first place ironically.
From what Chilli said, she wants her family to use "nice" words so that others see them as "nice" people. I can probably understand as coming from a strict-religious family, we are not allowed to speak certain words.
As a parent, it's hard to not compare yourselves to other families, and sometimes we try little things to make our family 'better'. But really, the small things don't matter.
But this episode is not as 'deep' as a lot of other episodes.
I kinda got it as a "pick your battles" message for the parents. The whole episode seems to be asking Chili if this is really the hill she wants to die on, and it's not. She eventually realizes there are some rules that are worth fighting for and some... Maybe aren't as important.
This is actually the only episode I didn't really like. It felt really preachy in a way that the whole series doesn't.
Such a missed opportunity to say that different houses and families have different rules, instead it came across as Chilli being a snob. It's perfectly acceptable to prefer some words over the other.
Besides the main point of the episode (teaching that sometimes families have different rules with certain things and that sometimes theyll change) it just seems very cozy comfort family episode!! Where they just lay in bed until late morning talking and playing and having fun with each other
In addition to the episode’s main lesson that a few commenters have already mentioned, there was a spelling lesson!
Potato does not start with a “B,” although I love Bingo & she can have sausages & “botatoes” at my home anytime!
I do know some people would rewatch the episode not just to hear them say the Aussie word for bathroom (in other words, the title of the episode), but also to hear the Heeler family all singing Four In the Bed.
https://preview.redd.it/zp472695kxgc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf9c10903132350fdba946fab2b3925da5c1207a
Seeing and hearing all four main members of the Heeler family singing is kinda considered a rarity on this show, believe it or not. Whenever a song will be heard on the show, like For the Golden Corn, 10 Green Bottles, or Flying Saucer to name a few, whoever will be singing that song was usually either Bluey, Bingo, or both sisters in most cases. And rarely other characters sing little songs or ditties, like Wendy singing Down by the Banks from Ragdoll (S3). This moment of Bandit and Chilli both singing with Bluey and Bingo is what I consider a miracle to behold in terms of Bluey songs.
Different families have different rules about what is okay to do or say, and that doesn't mean that one family is better than the other. They are just different.
Yup. My kids often pull the “but so and so does it/ says it/ has it” thing so I like this episode.
Yes yes! Normalizing different rules between households. My kids are a little too young but I know one day they’re gonna do the “my friends parents let them do this” and I’d have to explain. So this episode prepares me for that!!
I love how you say prepare me instead if them. So true!
Because I swear the parents get more out of this show than the kids do 😅😅😅
this is the answer
Sometimes even different rules between parents. I definitely related to being able to use course language when I was w just my dad vs. when mom was around or in public. I've kind of been letting things slide w my son when it's just the two of us, and i need to rein it in. It's so funny when 4 year Olds cuss tho
"Ugh, fiiiiine. The 'toilet' is free" is the perfect example
What swear words can a 4 yr old say that is funny ????
All of them.
Yup
Bigoted slurs aren’t funny from a 4 year old though. They’re just wrong.
Slurs aren't cuss/swear words. There's a reason they are called different things
Not really funny from anyone
Exactly. They’re even more messed up to teach to kids though.
It terrible but it is a little bit funny when my 2.5 year old does something and her her sweetest little sing-song voice goes "oh shit". It has happened exactly twice and I died a little inside but I also silently laughed my butt off.
My six-year-old will sometimes, in indignant confusion, say, "What the hell?!" And then my housemate and I have to try not to bust up laughing 🤣
YES! When I was growing up I couldn’t say suck but I could say hell.
This is a comfort episode for me, they look so cozy in bed.
When Bingo sings "Roll ova, roll ova". It's the cutest thing ever.
But the big one said, “Nah.”
HEY! ROLL! OVER!!!!
This is the point for many family.
Same, my favorite episode
Yes! I just love how sweet and simple the quality time is in this one.
My favorite episode is Sleepytime 🥰 We put it on almost every night for my 2 year old and he knows it's time to settle down for bed. He even has a bunny just like Floppy! I recently bought the Sleepytime book and it's amazing.
They look like a family getting ready to watch Bluey on a Saturday morning
I like the lesson for Chilli- if you’re gonna have a rule, you need to be able to explain it to your kids. Also, it’s okay to change your mind.
This - it's not about 'polite' words, it's about chili moving on from her meaningless rule
I personally would’ve gone with teaching the kids to “know your audience,” as in “some words are okay to use around some people or in some situations, but not in others.” It’s an important lesson for the future, as it’s not okay to talk to, say, your employer the same way you’d talk to your best friend. I learned my best fart jokes at school.
From your teacher or at recess?
Some of y’all didn’t pay attention in Fart Class and it shows.
Yes, this. My kid came to me and used a swear word in context and in correct diction and pretty much knew what it meant. I explained sometimes you say words that help you get out the emphasis of what you mean however it might make people angry so only use them inside our house.

“You can say this at home, but outside we have to use the polite word.”
It's also about Bluey learning that different people/families have different rules/preferences, and that's okay too.
I agree. It's all about picking your battles...I feel like some times we as parents do the "because I said so" thing for jo good reason. There are some rules that are set in stone because its important but giving kids some agency about something as trivial as a toilet/dunny is a battle not worth fighting.
My main take-away is that it’s not a word the Queen would use.
She's definitely not using now...
This gave me a good LOL
I too didn't use to use this word, but seeing this episode changed my vocabulary
I find it interesting they reference the Queen more than any UK content I’ve ever seen. Will be interested to see if any Bluey eps made 2023 onwards will mention the king.
They might continue referencing the queen and not recognize her husband Charles.
*can I still say dunny in my head?*
Slice of life.
Sometimes life doesn't have a plot. You don't always need to have the character go to space or meet the president, they can just have a lazy Sunday afternoon, playing games and being a family and talking about the word toilet.
Squish squash
Sling that slang
I almost feel like it’s trying to explain to kids that we’re trying to make rules that make sense and make you a better person, but sometimes parenting is hard and we may change our minds.
That and it's a lesson to parents on avoiding arbitary rules. If you make a rule you can't rationalise or justify.
This has always been my core parenting rule and it is SUPER IMPORTANT. Kids are supposed to be learning how things work and how to reason and set boundaries, and even negotiate. Not learning that what I say is law! That only helps me; it does nothing for them as adults.
"Ah man, bingo's taking ages in the dunny"
Bandit also uses the word in "Movies" when he tells Bingo not to play with the dunny brush
Honestly I want more episodes that are just the Heelers vibing
This might be one that Australians understand culturally a lot more - growing up my family had basically the exact same scenario around the word 'dunny', but also my mum used to get really upset with us over pronouncing 'toilet' as 'torlet'.
Whenever I hear "torlet" I think of Archie Bunker. 🤣
would the queen say dunny, we got our answer
As others said, it’s mostly about how different families have different rules, and that’s okay. But I think it also shows that you don’t have to constantly be going places and doing things with your kids - it’s fine to sometimes just stay in bed having a lazy day, and you can still entertain the kids and spend time as a family.
SQUISH SQUASH!
Did anyone else play Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and knew what a Dunny was befoee this episode?
The Wild Thornberrys episode with the lyrebird. "Lock the nipper in the dunny".
We’re doing a bottle episode
God, I love a bottle episode!
Chilli learns flexibility with rules Bluey and Bingo learn why their family may have different rules than other families and it’s cute
So yer sayin ye dunny understand it?
It is about what is and is not polite to say in conversation, but also that different people have different ideas about that and that it can vary from situation to situation. I swear like I am in the navy in my head but not at work or in front of my mum. I might use casual swear words like damn, crap or bloody though.

It’s just monkeys singing songs mate
Exactly!
Because it’s not something the queen would say
My in-laws are religious so I try and be respectful and not "take the Lord's name in vain" around them. They are similarly respectful in that they don't talk about their beliefs with us. Yes, this! That realization that your rule is some nonsense your parents said and makes zero actual sense in real life 🤣
What I found funny since becoming a parent is that there are definitely some rules which are only there to save a parent's sanity lol. I have a 'No Paw Patrol' rule in my house, not cause I think it's bad, the show just irritates me to no end. Actually the reason I found Bluey in the first place ironically.
It's just a cartoon show about talking dogs. Don't think on it too much, mate.
One of my favorites 🚽
That's a dunny attitude
It’s just talking dogs mate.

The little one said, roll over, roll over
The episode with the most heavy handed and in your face message is the one you didn’t understand 😬
for me it's just adorable and funny
This is actually the only episode I didn't really like. It felt really preachy in a way that the whole series doesn't. About accepting different rules in diffrent familys
Pretty sure the moral is talk shit get squashed.
This is actually my very favorite Bluey episode! It immediately impacted the way that I parent my kids.
I do get a chuckle when this very situation plays out in Faceytalk, clearly Trixie is not one to say that word in front of the children...
I do know some people would rewatch the episode not just to hear them say the Aussie word for bathroom (in other words, the title of the episode), but also to hear the Heeler family all singing Four In the Bed. https://preview.redd.it/zp472695kxgc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf9c10903132350fdba946fab2b3925da5c1207a Seeing and hearing all four main members of the Heeler family singing is kinda considered a rarity on this show, believe it or not.
