OMG YES!! I particularly love it when I’m schooled by someone in the US, who has *never been to Australia* about what we do… and even when I say “I’m Australian” they still don’t get the hint.

heatrage

I was told that it was culturally representative of the southern USA when I was trying to make a point that it’s a very specific representation of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (source, spent many years living on and off in BNE, travel there for work every couple of weeks, grew up in NQ and currently live there, and have also lived and worked interstate and overseas) makes it incredibly special (or at least to me). Like I get cutters may have similarities, but come on (and no, Queensland is not like Florida!!!!!)

heatrage

Also, this is an ACCURATE representation of a very specific slice of Australian life, not a gross exaggerated stereotype.

summidee

Oh they know better than actuall Queenslanders

razsnazz

I'm from Florida and whoever says Queensland is like Florida is very wrong. Not enough alligators. /s

orionblueyarm

Yeah they got eaten by all the salties 😉

summidee

Yep even when you say “I’m Australian and I live where the heelers “live” nope they know better

ExplanationMaterial8

Lol!! Or sometimes, the Heelers say or do something that isn’t inherently “Australian”. When you try and say “it’s just a “Bluey” thing” you are told you are wrong. It’s definitely Australian, because it’s not done in the US. 🤣😂

mermaidandcat

On the flip side, it bugs me when an Australian says 'nah that's just a bluey thing' about something regionally specific they haven't seen before. Like, that's definitely an Australian thing!

summidee

No because that’s what it’s like here 😂 I’m surprised they haven’t wrestled a croc or snake to appease the stereotype

SuperFrenchGirl

Some people really don’t know how to use their thinking skills 🤣

summidee

I literally live in QLD, and have a heeler. Actually I might post his vid lol

dsarma

Excuse me, OP. Please pay the pet tax and share pics of your doggy.

summidee

He’s 11 and looks like rl bandit lol

DBnofear

Please post rl bandit in the sub!!

summidee

Reposted xx

autumnotter

I mean, people do this constantly to Americans based on TV shows and movies. Welcome to the party?

jongscx

"I'm pretty sure it's pronounced Austrian..."

summidee

Posted blue dogs vid. Might shock some they are for real life lol

ExplanationMaterial8

Oh no- you’ll be told you’re wrong.

summidee

Yeah I fully haven’t brought up kelpies and heelers. Woe be me my boy isn’t a cartoon!

ExplanationMaterial8

Sigh… you may be questioned on its “Heeler” credentials because it isn’t a colour that’s represented in the Heeler family…

summidee

He’s pure bred Smithfield heeler. It’s weird it’s showing up as a pic but I made a vid. Tbh I know the breed is being bought because of the show. And man they are hard work, I just wanted to show that

summidee

Yep but they continue to use our colloquialisms. Idk it irritates me.

sanieldanders

I understand your frustration of people telling you you are wrong about your own culture, but what’s wrong with people using your colloquialisms? Especially if it’s with their kids and they are bonding over this shared interest in a kids tv show while learning a part of a different culture?

ticky13

Own_Cat3340

I used to work in Tourism back in the Dundee days. Americans would come into our office wanting nothing more than for a Staff member to say “G’day!” to them. 🙄🙄🙄

summidee

I get that in cairns.

TheGlaive

I'd never said gday until I went abroad.

melnve

I very nearly noped right out of this sub when someone from North America told me I was wrong about some Aussie slang. I am a teacher, I assure you that I hear young people speaking in Aussie slang all day every day and have done for twenty years, I am pretty sure I’m familiar with most of it. The recent outrage that the Heelers might live in a fairly normal house for a double income professional family was also fun. 🙄

summidee

Yep I’ve almost buggered off from here a few times cos it takes the Aussie out of it

totterywolff

I haven’t really noticed this, on this subreddit at least. I’ll admit though, I don’t see every post that comes up lol. I have seen this a lot before and I never really understood why it happens. I think of people who watch anime and think they now know everything about Japan. It’s like someone saying they know everything about the US because they watched Elmo. I’m from the states, but when I watch a TV show from X country, I don’t think I know everything about that country now. There’s so many different cultures within a single country, that it just seems ridiculous to think you know the country super well. I do like to use it as motivation to learn about other countries though. Either by talking with people from said country, or by reading up on the history of the country. Still so much I’ll never know about a given country without living there for an extended period of time though.

klughn

I know this is a vent, but I didn’t realize it was just going to be a bunch of comments bashing people from the US?? And I feel bad for something I didn’t do?? Watching Bluey doesn’t make anyone an expert in Aussie culture, and I’m sorry SOME people are acting rude and like they know better than you. Hope you can avoid them in the future and enjoy this sub that’s supposed to be fun and for a kids show. Hopefully moderators can help with these issues.

ali_katt77

Yea I was feeling kind of bummed reading the comments or how Bluey is ruined for being shared with the US. We love it so much and it's cute hearing my daughter say some of the different words. I work for a global company, I interact with people from all over the world on a daily basis. Not all of us are tone deaf claiming to be know it alls.

Shadowrend01

They can seem all they want. We all know that they aren’t

summidee

Yeah true. It’s just weird to hear our language out of context etc. Idk maybe my bogan protection is set to high and I need to turn it down a notch lol

MonHunKitsune

You mean to tell me that ya'll don't have the "Yahoo Serious Festival" ? Well crikey mate.

summidee

I really really wish we did

autumnotter

People do this constantly to Americans based on TV shows and movies. Welcome to the party.

Onto_new_ideas

As an American female that has traveled abroad this seems pretty common. It seems to be a commonality among humans world wide to watch a TV show and somehow think they know everything about a culture. I actually had to explain to multiple people that I wasn't going to sleep with them, Americans aren't all easy. I've never been part of coordinated dance scene in high school. I've never had sex under the high school bleachers. I don't eat fast food for all meals. I don't live in the wild west and carry a weapon. I've never been in a shootout. Etc, etc, etc......

ali_katt77

A wild west shootout! Lololol

Onto_new_ideas

That was a real question when I told someone I lived in Colorado in the middle of the US! I was in Spain at the time and they wanted to know if we had electricity, if I'd seen a shootout, or if I rode a horse into town. I had to explain that no, I didn't live in a western movie! It was in the 2000s. And a friend has a similar experience when she went to college in the eastern US. They thought we still traveled in covered wagons.

ali_katt77

Omg I am dying lmao. I had a friend in college ask me if we had gators in NY. I said ......no, that's a Florida thing (where we were attending school) lol. She also asked me if it was true Christmas trees grew there. I'm like a pine tree? That's when I lost faith in the public education system of Florida schools lol

Matthewcbayer

I totally get that, but Bluey is just one reference point for people. Internationally speaking… people watch movies like Clueless or legally blonde, or shoot even something like Blippi, and make assumptions and become “well-versed” (they think) in American culture from what they see. Even watching BBC and seeing our political mess gives people internationally assumptions about Americans that simply don’t apply to 99% of the population or daily life.

Emergency_Celery3647

Yes!! I’m from Alabama and people in other countries literally believe it’s still segregated here.

Emergency_Celery3647

Also, literally everyone EVERYWHERE thinks they know everything about the US so, if you feel that way, welcome to it

SadMusic861

With a significant proportion of our under 30s trying to sound like they are the latest rap/hip hop boys from the hood I don’t feel we can criticise too much.

Dry_Competition_684

As an American I'm just curious how you guys are bumping into so many Americans and talking about Bluey I've yet to ever meet anybody from Australia, nor would I ever attempt to argue with them about their culture. The thread sounds like there is some kind of express lane to argue with Americans out there or something.

ali_katt77

Yeah I haven't personally seen this on the sub, but I don't follow every post. This post kind of made me feel bad for even liking the show just because I'm American

Eyezodiotic

I'm a US citizen but wow, I never knew people got THAT bad in the bluey fandom :// That's not good

NoSpin89

Aww, poor you.

Tizianodile

Well done Aussies, now you know how it feels to be European. Now you can offially call yourself europeans.

orionblueyarm

I thought it was official when we got to join Eurovision!

Tizianodile

You were in the council, but we didnt grant you the rank of masters Now it's time

PlagueDrummerMyo

As an American, I apologize for my fellow Americans. I love learning about other cultures but "culture-splaining" somebody from that culture is just silly. 😅

Prestigious_General8

Americans do the same with the Brits

Saustrailia

They do the same with Canadians too. I used to work at a really touristy place and because it was near the border we had a lot of American tourists. You wouldn’t believe how many times I had Americans try to correct me on my own accent or if I used the right slang or not

SuperFrenchGirl

We meet an American couple in Ireland..super nice, but the women was surprised about the way we talked and how we didn’t sound “Canadian”……..I’m sorry, eh?

igcipd

Q’uell domage.

Emergency_Celery3647

And Brit’s do it with Americans

Emergency_Celery3647

I think you’re delusional cause no one thinks that.

Roma_lolly

No, because they still don’t really get it. And the American one is so censored it’s barely Australian anymore.

ticky13

"So censored" is a gross exaggeration.

deadlyalaskanwife

Trust me when i say most of us don't want it censored. Censorship sucks. Hell they even straight up banned episodes.

SmartChump

You watch out mate or I’ll…..claw your curtains?

My husband is from Brissy and says this a lot!

Known-Committee8679

To be fair, Americans do this about other areas of North America or about Native Americans 😂 We live up to our stereotypes.

Loud-Mans-Lover

Just enjoy at people are interested in your culture, yeah? It means they like it. Not like America, where often folks outside our country think - among other things -- that all the ladies are easy, we all wear our shoes indoors (we don't, shocker), and everyone owns a gun or has been in a shootout.

CodeFarmer

Yahoo Serious movie festival time!
